Review

“The writing is fresh and immediate, with plenty of detail packaged into the smooth narrative.... [O]n their own terms, I found Susskind and Friedman's explanations crisp and satisfying.... I maintain a clear recollection of the bewilderment with which I struggled through my own university quantum-mechanics courses. For students in a similar position, trying to draw together the fragments of formalism into a clear conceptual whole, Susskind and Friedman's persuasive overview—and their insistence on explaining, with sharp mathematical detail, exactly what it is that is strange about quantum mechanics—may be just what is needed.”—David Seery, Nature“[T]he book will work well as a companion text for university students studying quantum mechanics or the armchair physicists following Susskind's YouTube lectures.”—Publishers Weekly“This is quantum mechanics for real. This is the good stuff, the most mysterious aspects of how reality works, set out with crystalline clarity. If you want to know how physicists really think about the world, this book is the place to start.”—Sean Carroll, physicist, California Institute of Technology, and author of The Particle at the End of the Universe

Physics lectures are of three types according to this anecdote of Niels Bohr:“A young man was sent by his own village to a neighboring town to hear a great Rabbi. He was to bring back a report in which all could share. When he returned he told his eagerly awaiting fellow citizens: “The Rabbi spoke three times. The first was brilliant; clear and simple. I understood every word. The second was even better, deep and subtle. I didn’t understand much, but the Rabbi understood it all. The third was by far the finest; a great and unforgettable experience. I understood nothing and the Rabbi himself didn’t understand much either.”Professor Susskind (1) of Stanford University is far ahead of Bohr’s Rabbi – he understands it all. To Susskind “Everything is easy in Quantum mechanics” (2). So easy that he always “destroys his lecture notes to prevent his lectures being the same next time” (3). “Given enough time, with no distractions, you could use [his book (4)] to eventually master Quantum Mechanics” (5). An attractive challenge as the book is only 350 pages.Only 350 pages perhaps, but it assumes you are versed in Classical Mechanics (which you aren’t). Realistically, you need Susskind’s first book (6) plus a preliminary YouTube series of 9 x 1.5 hour lectures on Quantum Entanglement (7). Plus you will need assistance from 10 x 1.5 hour YouTube lectures (8) in parallel with the book. Still a realistic challenge given the results (9).According to Susskind, Quantum Mechanics is much more fundamental that classical physics. “As far as we know quantum mechanics provides an exact description of every physical system” (10). Moreover, “the logic of classical mechanics of Newton is incorrect, the underlying structure is inadequate” (11). Not only should we logically learn quantum mechanics first, it is technically much easier than classical mechanics (12).Susskind lives in a Quantum Mechanical world, the real world, deploring our choice of units that makes Avogadro’s Number (13) and the speed of light (14) ridiculously large and Planck’s Constant (15) ridiculously small. He blames historical chemists who measured things by comparison to the size of their hands. Choosing units appropriate to the sub-atomic scale, such as making Planck’s constant = 1, would make his world feel normal. For those who enjoyed science and mathematics to a reasonable level (16) but who had to follow a career to survive in the world, this is more an opportunity than a challenge. Not that it is not a challenge! It is a mind tingling challenge. A way of familiarizing with the real subject with the actual equations - not a popularization. The fascinating history of Archimedes, Johannes Kepler and Isaac Newton fitting an ellipse to the Mars orbit and concluding with the Law of Gravity is only the half of it. Understand how the mathematics of vectors and matrices are fitted to the real world being Quantum Mechanics. Like Archimedes the French mathematicians Joseph-Louis Lagrange, Siméon Poisson, and the Irish mathematician William Rowan Hamilton were nice enough to magically or inadvertently provide the mathematics a long time prior to make it possible. Why this mathematical physics works no one knows, neither Susskind nor the Rabbi. One moment you feel like like Niels Bohr’s student in his third lecture then you are stunned when Professor Susskind commences a short summing-up by saying, in a matter-of-fact way, that an equation derived in the lecture is called Schrödinger’s equation (17)! Or that the postulates he has been talking about are Dirac’s postulates of Quantum Mechanics formulated in the 1930’s which have never needed to be replaced (18). Or, early on, describes a vector and says that it is Dirac’s notation (19).Finally, Susskind is to be applauded. If this can be done with Quantum Mechanics, it can be done in any subject of Physics or Mathematics or any other area of study. There must be a value in doing this (other than ex-auto workers retraining themselves for jobs at CERN) as the work will inevitably not continue to be publically funded unless tax-payers have some idea what it is.PS: The advantage of a career outside Physics is to know “you always write the minutes before the meeting”. Bohr’s student may finally have understood so little that he was not game to return to his village. As a precaution I have written this travelogue well before completing the trip.(1) Leonard Susskind is the Professor of Theoretical Physics at Stanford University, and director of the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Physics. His Wikipedia entry is a good read in itself.(2) Lecture 9, Quantum Entanglements(3) Lecture 9, Quantum Entanglements(4) Quantum Mechanics – The Theoretical Minimum by Leonard Susskind & Art Friedman. The “minimum” means just what you need to know to proceed to the next level.(5) Science News: quote from back cover of Susskind’s book.(6) The Theoretical Minimum – What you Need to Know to start doing Physics Leonard Susskind and George Hrabovsky.(7) Quantum Entanglements, Susskind, Stanford University, YouTube. It seems that the old unadorned lecture format has stood the test of time with only the whiteboard and marker (when it works) replacing the blackboard and chalk.(8) Modern Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Susskind, Stanford University, YouTube.(9) Well, you did not expect to read 350 pages straight cover to cover and then know Quantum Mechanics, did you? This is a 6 to12 month project – reading, watching YouTube lectures, frantic note taking hoping you might understand it later (the iPad pause button being a luxury unavailable in university lectures), revision, pushing forward, retreating, then finally with your newfound knowledge applying for a job at CERN.(10) Page xix.(11) Lecture 1, Quantum Mechanics(12) Page xx.(13) Avogadro's number, number of units in one mole of any substance (being its molecular weight in grams) ≈ 6×1023.(14) Speed of Light: c ≈ 3×108 m/s.(15) Planck’s Constant: The energy contained in a photon, the smallest possible ‘packet’ of energy in an electromagnetic wave ≈ 6.6x10-34 joule-seconds.(16) Realistically, for those who think they know classical Newtonian Physics and remember studying vectors and matrices, exponentials such as eiθ = cosθ + isinθ and who once knew the expansion of sin(θ + Φ).(17) Lecture 9, Quantum Entanglements(18) Lecture 4, Quantum Mechanics(19) Page 11, Quantum Mechanics – The Theoretical MinimumMalcolm Cameron8 May 2016

Goes through the basics of Quantum, with the goal of:* Not loosing the reader in the math* Not dropping so much math, that it all becomes abstract bullsh*tGreat introduction, or review if you've had quantum. Also, if you are learning quantum for the first time, it's highly recommended, since it emphasizes the CONCEPTS and CONSEQUENCES, rather than getting you lost in lengthly (and not terribly useful) derivations.

Following the Stanford online lecture series, Susskind and Friedman's new book introduces the reader to the field of quantum mechanics assuming little prior knowledge. The book does take a mathematical approach, though it is relatively light, and introduces some substantial concepts and results. It probably makes sense to read the book as well as watch the lectures but this book is self contained and approachable. The writing style is engaging and the book has various exercises that can help the reader confirm their understanding. The book starts by considering how to think about states of a system and measurement. In particular ideas about intrinsic spin are more or less the starting point of discussing quantum mechanics. This is a different track to most other introductory QM authors but the point is to introduce the most simple quantum mechanical Hilbert space, namely the space where spin vectors reside. The author goes through things like Pauli Matrices and commutating operators. The author discusses the postulates of quantum mechanics and results from Hermitian operators as well as the uncertainty principle. The author introduces time dependent Schrödinger equation naturally by first looking at the eigenstate solutions and then the superposition. The author then gets into the concept of entanglement. Another concept that usually comes later in quantum mechanics but is introduced naturally in the book. The basics of tensor products are considered and the authors work through canonical examples of entangled states and the uniqueness of them to quantum mechanics. There are aspects of this part which can be challenging to follow but watching the lectures online can help the reader who might feel a bit lost. The authors then discuss particle wave duality and the collapse of the wave function. And finally the authors get to the harmonic oscillator and discuss ladder operators and the solutions to the harmonic oscillators with the Hermite polynomials. This chapter I found more readable than most quantum mechanical texts so think they did a good job making intuitive a difficult set of ideas.Quantum Mechanics- the theoretical minimum largely achieves its goals of introducing the reader to quantum mechanics when they have little background and are absent a teacher to guide them. It still is a hard subject and this book uses more the simpler toy models than the typical arbitrary wavefunction. I prefer Bowman Essential Quantum Mechanics as a first introduction to the subject which I think is at the same level but I do like this and am glad I read it to get a different flavor of the subject, challenging for the uninitiated, but readable.

This book is written to women who have aborted, but I also found it very relevant to someone processing and grieving through loss as a birthparent. Kim is very honest in the reasons she opted for abortion and she is equally honest in how all those reasons unraveled after the abortion. She very lovingly handles the issues of guilt, shame, self-revulsion, questioning God, how it effected other pregnancies, marriage. There is no condemnation in her words, just encouragement to work through the pain and that God does not reject you either. The book is especially helpful if are a Christian, or maybe were and just can't get past the abortion. I have found secular books very hollow on how to overcome "taboo" loss through abortion or adoption--they are great at pointing out the psychological challenges, but they have shallow "solutions" for coping or healing. This book is authentic and spiritually healing!

This book was helpful in going through the steps of seeking healing after abortion.

Wonderfully inspiring book. Well written and easy to understand. The author uses her own experience to help cope with the pain and aftermath of an abortion. Would absolutely recommend.

This book is truely heartfelt. Anyone reading this book will feel no condemnation, only love and forgiveness. This book gives personal testimony and practical steps to help the reader understand God's grace and his amazing love. I would recommend this book to anyone who is searching for truth and healing.

Kim Ketola addresses women who've made the impossible decision to abort a child. The book first asks if the reader is searching their hearts and minds trying to heal. The end of the introduction is heartening to readers. She reminds us that we can entrust our hearts to Jesus; we can't "hide" our thoughts or faults from Him. Quoting John 6:37 and Heb 13:5, she comforts us with words showing God's eternal care for those who turn to Him.Ketola offers 3 "tools" at chapter ends to help the healing process - reflection on Bible passages, prayerful requests, and ways to respond using exercises and steps that aid in spiritual growth.Although I haven't experienced the pain of abortion, I knew girls who did. The ones that spoke about it to me were ashamed, heartbroken, and grieving. I think that this book would have helped them. Although I cannot relate to the author's saying that the morality of the abortion did not enter into her thoughts at the time, she is bravely honest to report that she was primarily thinking of her career, her reputation etc... This book is about healing; there is no distraction with discussion of the abortion issue as political policy.Women who need to heal after grieving this impossible choice will benefit from Ketola's telling of others in similar situations, from support from God's Word, and from suggestions for healing.*Complimentary copy received for review, this does not affect my opinion in any way*

In my experience the American church holds two sins on unforgivable pedestals; abortion is one of them. Christians can forgive pedophiles, murderers, thieves, drug addicts, liars, men who beat their wives and public menaces to society. If you willfully kill your unborn child, however, you might as well have leprosy. Or keep the secret to yourself. This is not right and it is exactly why I am so excited about this book by Kim Ketola. It extends grace, and I love it.There is so much in this book, offered by someone who knows. The book is written directly to women affected by abortion. It is heavy-handedly Christian, so don't be shocked by the abundance of Bible references and dependence upon God and His truths. The purpose of this book is to offer a path toward spiritual healing. That purpose requires much credit and mention of God.With vulnerable glimpses into her own experiences, the author tackles the issues of blame, guilt and relational reconciliation (both to the other people involved and to faith). She talks about Heaven and mourning the lost child. She discusses cultural inconsistencies that circle the definition of life. The text overflows with compassion and understanding. It's peppered with Scripture and solid doctrine. The back of the book provides loads of extra resources and reading suggestions. In its entirety, this book offers a path to renewed wholeness, all made possible by the immeasurable love of our God and Savior.I would love to get the book into the hands of all those who need it.

Good book.

it's good

Contiene información muy general y permite ubicarse en el tema, aunque no da muchas herramientas técnicas para implementar en el día a dia

I downloaded this ebook for free, so I had modest expectations and hoped it was worth my time. I got a bachelor's in psychology but never took a sport psych class, so I decided to brush up. The book was useful but fairly basic. The book avoids jargon and academic pretensions but doesn't have a ton of depth. It also relates to introductory psychology concepts such as conditioning, reinforcement, and locus of control. It's great if you want a quick overview or refresher of sports psych issues but delivers little else.

This well-written book might profitably be read in conjunction with the Quran in translation. The author portrays a very apologetic modern interpretation of the Prophet 's words and actions, however her perspective becomes predictably didactic and condescendingly biased toward that interpretation rather than engaging in any serious reflection. The author's understanding of Arabic is imperfect at best, which is not a trivial matter considering her reliance on many supposed "original" meanings for Arabic words that she contends have become distorted in the West. Regardless of their political views, or their opinion of Muhammad, I don't think this book will change anyone's mind either way.

I really enjoyed this book. It had a much more positive take on the life and political situation of Muhammad. Really interesting.

Excellent ! Broadview of this most Important prophet, his suffering, courage & inspirational life. Very helpful in understanding the impact of this man's life on billions of persons throughout the world. It is unfortunate that some followers corrupt the meaning of his message but it will help non muslims to better understand the founder of such a major religion.

I bought Armstrong's book about Muhammad in 2003, after reading her short book about the history of Islam. I liked that book, as it covered the main topics about Islam quite well, so I thought I would enjoy reading her previous, longer book about the founder of that religion: Muhammad - A biography of the Prophet. In Muhammad Armstrong paints a loving and sympathetic picture of the man who created the world's second largest religion (soon probably to become the first largest). The prophet is described as a gentle and caring person who possessed charismatic skills and spiritual deepness, that succeeded to transform Arabia from pagan belief to monotheistic belief in a remarkably short period of time. Armstrong depicts Muhammad in glowing colours, even when she admits his wrongdoings. In the 8th chapter, "Holy War", Armstrong recounts the massacre and summary executions of the Jewish community in Qurayzah and apologetically describes them as "a reminder of the desparate conditions of Arabia during Muhammad's lifetime" (p. 208). She continually reminds the reader that the word "Islam" means peace and reconciliation, but some of the events described in the book (and the atrocities committed in the name of Islam in our times) leave us wondering about the application of these virtues by Muslims throughout history.Prof. Emanual Sivan, one of Israel's leading historians of Islam, wrote a review about Muhammad in Ha'aretz. He described Armstrong's book as "history soaked in rose water" and claims that the author shed all sense of criticism before writing the book and failed in distinguishing between historical facts and myths which evolved long after Muhammad died. I am no expert of Islam, but I tend to agree; I feel I know more about the life of Muhammad now, but I am left with a sense of an unbalanced view of this great man. There was one observation in the book which I liked very much. When she starts describing Muhammad's rising success as a skilled and respected politician, Armstrong mentions that the Christian world has always judged this part of the prophet's life with distrust. The Western view has traditionally seen Muhammad's political success as proof that he was an impostor using religion as a means to power. To explain this attitude, Armstrong offers the following insight:Because the Christian world is dominated by the image of the crucified Jesus, who said that his kingdom was not of this world, we tend to see failure and humiliation as the hallmark of a religious leader. We do not expect our spiritual heroes to achieve a dazzling success in mundane terms. (p. 164)

The book is written in a way that people of western culture can understand.

Wrote very objectively about Islam. Better understandable about Islam. Thank you.

I liked Washington Irving's Muhammad better although this was easier reading.

A good review of the Prophet of Islam. The book was not overbearing and seemed to give a good review of the Prophet.

As a military historian with a Masters in Military History, it's not often that I find a book that I simply can't put down. Most books get a good professional look-see and filed for reference. Not so Jim Stejskal's book on the Berlin Det-A.This is not only a remarkable book, but an important book. Very little has been written about the ETO operations of the Special Forces during the Cold War. Most of the SoF literature that covers the period has been written about the MACV/SOG operations in Vietnam and in other conflicts... and most has been written from a first-person perspective (more on that below.). This book documents some of the untold and most incredible aspects of the Cold War as fought in Europe including revelations about the use of "Backpack" nukes and of the U.S. Army Special Forces operations behind 'enemy' lines in Cold War East Berlin and East Germany. . If, in fact, you liked Jonathan House's book "A Military History of the Cold War" or Eric Haney's "Inside Delta Force" then this is also must-reading.One of the best aspects of this book is that it was written by a serious and professional military historian... who was also a part of the unit through two tours of duty. Yet unlike a lot of the 'I was there' tell-all books about Special Operations forces, this is not a personal aggrandizement or a "look at me" type of read. This is a very in-depth and incredibly well-researched unit history that follows the Berlin Det-A teams from their inception int he 1950's through the dismantling of the unit after the dismantling of the Berlin Wall. Though the author was there and was a key member of the unit through some of the most interesting and tense moments of the Cold War, not once in this broader unit history does he mention his own role. Instead, this is a book documenting an un-heralded and unique unit of the U.S. Army Special Forces. It also gives a fantastic look into the culture of West Berlin from, for lack of a better term, a 'worm's eye view.'Last, and possibly among the most intriguing elements of this book, are the detailed revelations of the Berlin unit's involvement in Operation Eagle Claw, the attempt to rescue the American Hostages from Iran. Though several 'first person' narratives of this operation have been well-received (including Charlie Beckwith's "Delta Force" and Haney's book mentioned above) this is the first book that reveals some of the un-heralded activities of the operators who were on the ground in Tehran preparing to meet the Delta and Ranger rescuers who never made it past Desert One. It details the pre-rescue surveillance carried out by Dick Meadows and also documents an largely-forgotten aspect of the raid, which was the complication of how to rescue Americans held at the Chancellery building in Tehran, separate from other hostages.Without a doubt, this is a book that should be on the shelf of any serious student of Special Operations. It is also very readable and completely engaging. A must-read.

There are several excellent first-person accounts of episodes in Special Forces creation, development, and operations that we hold as important to our history. This work is not one of those. It is much more comprehensive. In Special Forces Berlin, Stejskal takes us through two generations of Green Berets clandestinely planning and executing missions in a unique environment during the Cold War, a period covering more than half of Special Forces existence. The power of the work is in Stejskal’s approach. He takes us from the post-WW II Cold War world environment to the creation of Special Forces and the secret Berlin detachment. Throughout the era, he explains the episodes in the Cold War, the situation at each time in Berlin, and then the work of our units to adapt to their environment and to conduct those difficult missions. The best example of that is the Berlin participation in the Tehran hostage rescue. Jim pulls no punches. He discusses mistakes and weaknesses along with the successes. The takeaway is the ability of a small Special Forces unit, under cover, to evolve, adapt, and continue to march until the enemy collapsed before them and they withdrew leaving no hint that they were there. Read it. Ignore the back-cover photos of ‘Styk’ morphing into Sam Elliot. It’s a publisher’s trick.

The TRUE Quite ProfessionalsOne of the premier clandestine Special Forces (aka Green Berets) sub-units of the Cold War was DET-A. Finally, James Stejskal with his book “Special Forces Berlin: Clandestine Cold War Operations of the US Army’s Elite, 1956-1990” gives this unit the historical treatment and tribute it deserves. This organization has left its mark on the evolution of modern Special Forces and its Unconventional Warfare mission. DET-A was a small unit stationed in Berlin, Germany for 34-years, during the height of the Cold War to conduct sensitive activities. This unit specialized in unconventional warfare, counter-terrorism and direct action using low-visibility techniques of tradecraft (plain clothes undercover operations) and high-end state-of-the-art equipment like their testing of the feasibility of employing Special Atomic Demolition Munitions (aka backpack nukes) before the mainstream establishment of Green Light teams. DET-A also revolutionized counter-terrorism techniques later adopted by Blue Light a Special Forces stopgap counter terrorist unit that was disbanded after the establishment of the 1st SFOD-D (aka Delta Force). This book outlines all this plus much more, and although this book does not divulge any classified information (rightly so) it is still very revealing. It is comforting to know this capability lives on in the modern Special Forces maintaining that direct linage to the WWII Office of Stratgic Services (OSS) and DET-A respectively. I will also add that besides the superb quality of the hardcover book I also purchased the Kindle version because I did not want to wait for the book to arrive in the mail. The Kindle version is excellent on my PC and smart phone with no glitches. I highly recommend this book to all SOF operators, military historians and, I think it reads very well for the layman reader as well; who will be intrigued by the exploits of these extraordinary men. As a 28-years active duty SF operator I give this book five stars!

My eyesight is not the best these days, even with glasses. The pictures are just beautiful. And the most important is that I can see the date from across the room. At the end of the year, I give the pictures to our local church for the children to use in making cards and posters.

Stunning and beautiful photographs. Each day it's a complete joy to change to the next picture. This is one of the best daily, desk-calendars I've bought. Obviously it helps if you like flowers :) The size is awesome too! The pictures are not teeny tiny, they are 6 by 6" and the weekend ones are 6 by 5.5". A real variety of pictures too: close up of single flowers, abundant flowers crowding a path, wildflowers on a hillside. Also there is always the name of the particular flower provided.. I think I'll be buying this yearly to help me get through the 4-5monts of winter here.

Actually, I have not opened this year's calendar, but based on the one I had for 2014, my expectations are quite high. All of the pictures are quite beautiful. I appreciate the variety. On one day, I'll see a close-up view of a gorgeous rose. On another day, I'll see a field of blooms. Occasionally, I'll see a botanical illustration of an entire flowering plant. This calendar is one of the joys of getting up early in the morning.

I purchase this every year for my 87 year old mother. She can't see very well but it is important for her to know what day it is and day of the week. She loves the surprise of every day and the flowers are beautiful....very nicely made

GORGEOUS flowers. Paper is substantial weight and the photos are the highest quality. After four years of buying the Bird version of this calendar, I bought the flower one as a gift, and the recipient loved it. It's a little burst of sunshine every day.

Very pretty picture calendar with a stand. But I really preferred the ones they used to make with the tear off pages. It was not clear when I ordered that this is basically 1/2 pages and must put all to the back till 1/2 way then turn all around. Do not really care for this setup as I can't use for notes ,etc.

I don't sneeze with these flowers. They are beautiful and when both side dates havepassed I send them with female birthday cards to enjoy as well. Another desktop decoration.

I buy these Workman Publishing Daily Gallery calendars as gifts and everyone loves them. They will actually save the cards and share them with others. If you are looking for a calendar to buy, choose Workman Publishing.
