Bring Warm Clothes : Letters and Photos from Minnesota's Past was written by a former columnist for the Minnesota Star and Tribune, Peg Meier. Among the visual works are paintings of Minnesota from its exploration years, mostly by Seth Eastman and Karl Bodmer, which capture the rustic and wild character of a land yet untrammeled by the fences, industrial complexes and housing developments with which most of us are familiar. For those who like to see photographic reality, there are photos of Minnesota's early pre- and post-statehood years during the 19th Century and of the 20th Century up to World War II. The former include pictures of the Civil War in which the volunteers of the First Minnesota Regiment participated. In all some 25,000 men from the state fought in battles like Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettysburg, losing some 2,500 men, almost one out of every ten. Other photos show the old homes, city and town streets, early industry, sod homes, and family and other groups that bring to life a time past.Particularly enjoyable were the letters from the early settlement of Saint Paul and Minneapolis as presented in the merry correspondence of the Fuller family, and the witty press releases of Jane Grey Swisshelm in her paper the St Cloud Visiter, later the St. Cloud Democrat. The letters of Harriet Griswold reveal the fact that boom and bust economy is not new to our era, when her correspondence goes from exuberence and big plans in October of 1856 to bearly hanging on in September of 1858. The Civil War diaries of Sam Bloomer and Isaac Taylor and the World War I letters of Philip Longyear, an ambulance driver at the French front, bring those conflicts to a more vivid reality. The plight of the Native Americans and the fear and reactionism that the Indian Wars generated is also covered.The author has, wisely in my opinion, allowed the primary sources speak for themselves. She adds very little interpretive material of her own and then only to clarify where necessary or to provide follow up information.One of the principle points of note is the fact that most of these people had many of the same problems we have, and that they bring some of the same perspectives, same blind spots, and same sense of humor that we bring to our own daily lives. They lived one day at a time, facing an unknown future with the same uncertainty that we do. Some stories came out with a happy ending, some did not. It makes one wonder what some future writer of Minnesota history will say and think of our own times.

This captivating book will give you the flavor of how your immigrant ancestors fared in Minnesota. The wonderfully curated letters and photos really brought my genealogical research to life. I don't have many photos of my great and great great grandparents life on the iron range and around Duluth, but I feel like I could borrow some from this book. :)

Taking a globalist perspective , similar to Weinberg but at half the length, Mr Hanson uses a unique approach. For example; Chapters 2 through 6 are entitled Air, Water, Earth , Fire, and People. I have never seen that methodology used before and yet the author makes it work. The author writes at a level which assumes the reader is knowledgeable of WW2 and has read at least some of the popular histories. This saves a great deal of time and text. The analysis concentrates on fundamentals of production ,logistics, time and distance while spending almost no space on battlefield sketches of individual actions. Mr Hanson is very good at avoiding the standard tropes and clichés , making his own reserved judgments. The Author has a firm grasp of basic Economics, essential to any serious History of this subject. Because I agree with much of what he writes, he sure seems insightful. The best one volume History of WW2 to come along since a" A World at Arms". I recommend the Read.

This paradox is fully explored in this magnificent work, beautifully written and massively researched, it is bound to be a standard in the field of strategic studies of the war. This book provides all kinds of info about vice and criminal dealings in Shadowrun but strangely gives no real info on how your runners can set up their own. A system much like the one for criminal organizations in Judge Dredd D20 would have been useful but I suppose they wanted each individual Game Master to handle that sort of thing their own way. That aside, this is still a very good book and is well worth buying even if you are not in a 4th edition campaign.

Vice does a nice job of talking about crime in SR4, the major as well as the minor players. At 192 pages, it's a very sizable book.The Mafia, Yakuza, Triads, Vory and David Cartel are covered in detail. There are also a number of "ethnic" syndicates, minor gangs and various serial killers/nutballs. Great information for a SR gamemaster.

The background info on organized crime in the Sixth World is generally useful without being particularly imaginative or providing many really useful hooks. This book is worth adding if your collection is already strong, but should not be a high priority unless you are really, really focused on the crime syndicates.

A good book with lots of background information. Very useful in some types of campaigns, less in other types. Would've liked some NPCs to go with the various factions.

Excellent book. Version is celebrating 20 years of Shadowrun is the best.Very complete book. Highly recommend.This supplement Shadowrun comes complete some small details that are missing in the basic book.The Work of the publisher is impeccable.
