I bought this book, Black Count, because it was on sale and I was intrigued by the subject matter. The father of the author of The Count of Monte Chris to was a commanding officer in Revolutionary France? I has to check it out.The book was long, and I had to take an occasional break to chew on it a bit, but immersing myself into 18th century France and it's colonial holdings was fascinating. The dynamics of French nobility moving to the Americas to find their fortune and do whatever they wanted with the natives and the slaves, producing families at will and leaving them behind when they became an inconvenience, well, it was simply appalling. Alex Dumas' father was, needless to say, a piece of work. How General Dumas became such an honorable man with such a background is amazing to me. I also especially enjoyed reading how the French Revolution tried to eradicate racism, only to have it reinforced when Napoleon Bonaparte came to power. I love reading about people of African descent in European history; it proves, as my mother always says, "We've ( people of color) have always been everywhere." The Black Count by Reiss did not disappoint.

This historical biography is based on the life of the famous author, Alexandre Dumas’s father, Thomas-Alexandre, known as Alex Dumas.After time spent in the War of the Polish Succession that ended in 1738, Frenchman Alexandre (Antoine) Davy de la Pailleterie, a future marquis, left France to seek his fortune in Saint-Domingue, the island of Hispaniola. At that time, the Spaniards owned, Santo Domingo, the east side of the island, and the French owned the west, Saint-Domingue (Haiti). Because of sugar planting, Saint-Domingue was one of the wealthiest islands in the world.Antoine moved in with his younger brother, Charles, who had married well and became a well-known sugar planter. Antoine scrounged off his brother for a decade, kept several slave mistresses, and refused to work. Charles and Antoine’s relationship ended violently. Antoine fled with three of his brothers’ slaves, one of which was his latest mistress. To probably resist arrest, Antoine moved up into the highlands, a densely wooded mountains, eventually settling in Jérémie, an isolated area of Haiti. There, he changed his name to Antoine de l’Isle—Antoine of the island.Antoine purchased a mistress for a very high price, Marie Cessette Dumas. Marie Cessette bore him four children. The eldest child was Antoine’s favorite, Thomas-Alexandre, born in 1762. When Antoine returned to France, he would eventually send for fifteen year old Thomas-Alexandre. Antoine sold Marie Cessette and their other three children.In France, Antoine made sure his son was well educated. Thomas-Alexandre became an excellent swordsman. As a young man, Thomas-Alexandre, enlisted in the dragoons, and rejected his father’s surname, Davy de la Pailleterie, and took his mother’s surname, Dumas. He would never again be known as Thomas. Instead, he used Alexandre (Alex) Dumas. He even listed his father as Antoine Dumas.As a Lieutenant Colonel, Alex, who was later commissioned as a General, married Marie-Louise Labouret of Villers-Cotterets, France. They would have three children: two daughters and Alexandre Dumas, Jr. their last child, the future author, was born 10 years later.The book is filled with an enormous amount of French history, some of which includes the shrewd General Bonaparte. At one point, General Dumas and Bonaparte fought together. General Dumas sailed to Egypt with Bonaparte.General Dumas appeared to be a loving husband and good father. On the front, he was a courageous, strong-minded, intuitive leader, unbiased toward his troops. From his men he received much devotion and admiration. His flaw was sometimes not using tact and being too critical. He had high expectations of a soldier’s performance. Yet his bold criticism toward inept superiors or those favored by superiors cost him promotions or unkindness later in life.General Napoleon showed farsightedness concerning his own future ambitions. However, he appeared to be intolerant of criticism expressed by General Dumas, and inflated his own self-importance when he and Dumas were generals.Napoleon was willing to cruelly exploit others for his own gain, especially concerning the Rights of Man decree. When Napoleon became emperor, the law, previously decreed by former King Louis XVI of France, April 4, 1792, which provided citizenship for all property owning free men of color on the islands, became invalid in 1800. In France, interracial marriages as well as interracial education were outlawed. People of color who had lived free in France were to be rounded up and sent back to the colonies. They could no longer live in Paris or the surrounding suburbs. This appears like history repeating itself. German citizens had experienced this during the Second World War, and currently Dominicans of Haitian descent are being denied citizenship because of their place of birth.Without giving too much away, this is a superb historical biography, well written, full of information, and a pleasure to read. The history in France and on the island, Saint-Domingue, will amaze you. I took my time reading this book. Surprisingly, Alexandre Dumas, author of The Three Musketeers, incorporated some of his father’s famous expeditions when writing his book. The author, Alexandre Dumas, expresses a genuine, tender love and admiration for his father, General Dumas. This book deserves five stars.

I like history. Actually, I love history. Anything set in the past gives me that delicious “tell me a story” feeling.Of course, I’m not talking about dry facts and figures, although they can be interesting in small doses. Nope, I’m talking about the good stuff. People are what bring history alive for me. What did they want; what did they fear? How were they better than me, and even more delightful, how were they worse? Who did they love? Who hated them? Let me share in their triumphs and make me dread their disasters. For good or ill, make me care that this person lived and died. Make them live again for me.It’s not too much to ask, is it?Obviously, not for Tom Reiss. In writing The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo, he’s succeeded admirably. Don’t just take my word for it; I sure wouldn’t. But if you put any stock in a little prize established by a man named Pulitzer, then you might want to check this book out. Especially if you know and love the work of General Alex Dumas’ son, Alexandre Dumas (pere). Stories like The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, both of which were inspired by the author’s spectacular father, General Alex Dumas.Yeah, I went there. Spectacular is kind of a wimpy word when it comes to General Alex Dumas. He was the original Superman. A man too strong, too principled, too kind, too charismatic, too handsome—too good to be true. And yet he was truly that man. Others have complained in their reviews that Reiss’ bias toward his subject was too apparent, but I am amazed that anyone could read of General Alex Dumas’ life and not be besotted by him.Guilty!Read this book. Meet General Alex Dumas. To know him is to love him. Don’t believe me. Believe his son, who immortalized his exploits, his bravery, and his humanity in the best way he knew how.Comte Thomas-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, who served his country as General Alex Dumas. The summary was direct and to the point but also went to great lengths to make sure I understood and implemented to the rules to my life. I've read summaries from this publisher before but this one introduced a new element, I think they are called the Rules in Action, but basically is stories of characters with real world problems applying the rules to their life. The insights guide in the introduction of the book made the content familiar and the action plan at the end is making it easier to actually apply these rules to my life. Can't wait to read the full book now to gain even more insights.

I enjoyed the book very much. The rules are very down to Earth and simple to understand with a lot of good arguments. However, coming from an academic background I wish Dr. Peterson could have taken more of counter arguments. But still a great book overall and brought a bit more balance to my life!

During recruitment there is so much networking, forth and back, follow up, travel that it's difficult to enjoy my reading habits, especially since I'm recruiting for two very tough industries: tech and hedge funds. This book was quick to read, which was perfect for my current situation, and also helped me to keep more order in the crazy lifestyle of recruitment. I am about to be a father (expecting in September!) and this book weirdly took a bit of the weight and anxiety off my shoulders. With all that I have seen immigrating to the US and everything hectic in our world today it's a bit overwhelming bringing a baby to the world but... it's really not that bad and if faced head on, with purpose and meaning, everything will be great! Rant over. It's a great book and has simple and practical advice that is much needed today. Hope you enjoy as much as I did!

This book is a god send, lots of valuable information here! I have fasted many times and always get amazing benefits. Don't count on the institutions to tell us what we need to cure ourselves, because they simply will not. There is too much money to be lost if things like grape diets were being recommended to people and people were actually ridding themselves of disease without expensive drugs and expensive medical treatments. I have rid myself of severe scalp psoriasis that I've suffered from for 11 years by doing a 10 day grape diet, which included fasting. It was that simple. All the drugs, corticosteroids, toxic shampoos, and doctors appointments didn't help me, but a simple grape diet and fasting did. So much money and time was wasted, not to mention harming myself with toxic drugs and shampoos, while the solution was so simple and so natural and so healthy, and doesn't cost anything! This book is easy to read and packed with information in so little pages. God bless all the people working hard to get this valuable information out there. This book claims that the diet can cure diseases much more severe than scalp psoriasis, and I have no reason to believe that it wouldn't, because the results I got were amazing and totally unexpected, and scalp psoriasis is not even mentioned in the book. I would highly recommend this book and this diet. I have not followed the diet completely, but fasting alone has dramatically improved my life and health. I'm sure following the diet completely would have even greater benefits!

I discovered Prof. Ehret's teachings while doing research on the power of a raw food diet. The book was an easy read. The topic is of great interest to me so I read the book in one day. Prof. Ehret spent years traveling the world and documenting the effects of a raw diet, particularly it's effect on physical health. His findings support what I already knew to be true through my own personal journey. I highly recommend this book especially to anyone experiencing health issues. The beauty of Prof. Ehret's suggested diet is that, unlike pharmaceutical treatment, it does no harm. Try it with an open mind and a positive spirit. This book is now in my top 5 list of "most important books to read for health and longevity".

Professor Arnold Ehret is legendary. I have bought and given away this book at least a dozen times. It is a must read for anybody concerned with learning how to eat their way to maximum health. His book "Rational Fasting" is the bible for those wanting to learn how to fast safely.This edition, though not the official edition from Ehret Publishing, contained all the correct copy and the price was right, too.Highly recommended.

It's amazing how far ahead of his time, this professor Ehret was. He's discovered decades, almost a century ago what the most awoke scientists have just recently been discovering. This man to me is the Einstein of his world, regardless of the fact that he hasn't received such recognition, well deserved on his part. Read this book in search of a different truth from what you're being constantly fed in a capitalist economically motivated society and you, too, will come to acknowledge his genius and revere him for his accomplishments.

Perhaps, the book should be titled, THE BOOK OF FASTING, as it is deficient in terms of justifying the diet.On page location 803, the author makes two statements;1. These tables (start page location 809) by Ragner Berg were published in Germany 10 years after my "mucus theory" of disease and food qualities had been taught, and Berg unconsciously gave the scientific proof that my "mucus theory" is correct.2. The mere fact that some foods given in the list are "acid-binding" does not necessarily mean that I endorse their use.As for statement 1, where is the proof? Or is that the same as the author's statement on P 512 that "it is self evident how important iron is in the blood," because it is red?Statement 2 is one indication how the author leaves you hanging as to what the SYSTEM is. A system is a process that has clearly defined steps to take. Ehret talks about the foods he teaches us to eat. I ask what foods do you approve of and why? Why do you recommend eating wheat bread which is mucus forming where pumpernickel is acid-binding?It is totally unclear how to progress from the beginning to a lifestyle. I would suggest that the author create an outline of his "system" and then write about it.I can see fasting this way, but vegetarian diets are notoriously deficient in protein. I am sorry, but I am not a cow, and I don't have five stomachs to chow down on greens (p547).

As a woman who has been on an Infertility Journey for 5 years, who has done a TON of research on a woman's fertility and a mans fertility, an as a woman who is older than 35.....I can tell you this is a GOOD BOOK! Its well written and informative. The author is correct - IT ALL STARTS WITH THE EGG QUALITY!!! I found this book after years of fertility treatments, a miracle baby, then 2 miscarriages, and still trying for a 2nd miracle baby! I had already spent time with 3 different fertility Drs with the Diagnosis of "Unexplained Infertility". It became very clear to me that Egg Quality is Key. So I did TONS of research on what OTC Supplements have Proven Results in helping Increase the Quality of a Womans Eggs. I was already taking 30+ Supplements a day when I read this book....and it was great that SOO many of the OTC Supplements I was already taking are in this book as recommendations. Supps like Q-10, Micronized DHEA, Myo-Inositol, Antioxidants, Omega 3s, etc.etc. I WISH I would have found this book 5 years ago at the beginning of our journey!!! Its a good read and I recommend it to any woman...in 20s, 30s, or 40s...who wants to get pregnant with a Whole Healthy Baby!!!

After two miscarriages, 4 failed fertility treatment cycles and being told by three separate fertility specialists that my husband and I had less than 5% chance of conceiving and carrying to term, we decided it was time to take a more proactive and informed approach to our infertility. Our search for solid information lead in many directions, including to this book. We bought it, devoured it, put as many of its suggestions into practice in our lives as we possibly could, and gave the program 4 months to work its magic while taking a break from fertility treatment. From it we learned that though women with high FSH like myself are often told its because we have "diminished ovarian reserve" and "poor egg quality", the science of egg development and quality is a lot more complicated and there are ways you can intervene to encourage the eggs you do have remaining to be the best they can be. I'm science minded enough to know that I can't draw any firm conclusions about whether the ideas in this book made the difference for us or we just got lucky, but after those four months we started trying to conceive again, did so right away, and I gave birth to our beautiful, healthy, miracle baby girl just a few days ago. My advice is, don't let doctors dictate what is or isn't possible based on their own repertoire of (limited) treatment options they make available to their patients. If you've struggled with infertility, and you're determined to not go down without a fight like me after the doctors have told you you're a lost cause and to start considering egg donors or adoption, this book simply MUST be one of the items in your arsenal of alternative approaches.

This book is everything! I would highly recommend reading this as a first step to anyone having trouble conceiving or having recurrent miscarriages. I had recurrent miscarriages and terrible fertility scores- an fsh of 14 and an AMH <1. My fertility doctors gave me about a 4-8% chance of an IUI helping me conceive. But i wanted to try it. So i did everything possible to improve my odds. I did acupuncture along with taking ubiquinol, melatonin, and DHEA as suggested in the book. 14 weeks after i added in the DHEA i got pregnant during my second IUI. I believe everything I did made all the difference. I do want to mention that i wish the author hadn't downplayed the importance of cutting out caffeine. Even a small amount of caffeine per day leading up to pregnancy may increase miscarriage risk- they don't have enough evidence disproving that. For me I think cutting it out completely was a vital (though difficult) step. I cut down on sugar but i didn't completely eliminate it like i did the caffeine and alcohol. Regardless- this book is so needed in a world where doctors often don't provide us with important information to improve our health. It makes sense that optimizing the body's health will help with fertility too. Read this book and do acupuncture regularly for at least 3 months before you try to conceive. I did acupuncture 2-3 times a week during the cycle that got my pregnant. My doctor was suprised i could get 3 follicles at my age and with my fertility numbers. But it's totally absolutely possible - you just need to give your body a chance to respond to the changes you make! This book is a must have whether you try naturally or with assistance.

After being diagnosed unexplained infertility and multiple failed treatments, I lost all the faith on medical help and myself after 3 years of trying. Running out of budget, we cannot afford another fertility treatment in a near future. So I turned my hope to diet and supplememt. This book is enlightening. I started taking ubiquonol, vitamin d and inositol. In addition, i cut off all the refined carb, candy and processed food. Eating nothing but nutritious lean meat, nuts and veggies. 4 cycles after I implement the plan instructed by the book, I first time ever saw a double line on my testing strip! This book is a life changer, telling the truth no fertility doctor will discuss with you.

After 5 years of trying to conceive, 3 miscarriages,failed ivf, countless other fertility treatments; I bought this book. I took the suggested supplements and I conceived within a couple months. My son was born May 2016. We decided to have another baby and I had a miscarriage. We were not successful until I began taking the supplments mentioned in this book. I went on the supplements and became pregnant within a couple of months. My daughter was born in November 2018. Without this book I know I wouldn't have my babies.
