One thing I particularly like about Kylie Brant's work is that she doesn't waste words, she doesn't indulge in tedious repetition or belabour the point, she writes it and treats readers with enough respect to assume they'll get it the first time. There's no seemingly endless narrative telling us the same things over and over again. The writing is clear, consise, well-researched, fast-paced and compelling. At no time during this book did I feel the need to skim, which is becoming rarer these days.A few things I didn't particularly like were the constantly changing perspectives. I'm not a fan of chapters having the characters' names to let the reader know whose turn it is to feature. I think it's a bit lazy, and readers of this type of book don't need it. But it wasn't a deal-breaker.I also felt that the story wasn't quite complete, but since it is the start of a new series I guess some things need to be held back for the next book. However, the focus of the story was on Eryn, (recently released from a secure hospital where she spent most of her young life after killing her mother ) rather than the Marshal Cady, for whom the series is named. Perhaps Cady moves to the forefront in book two?Complaints aside, this was an excellent psychological thriller, and though I picked up on the clues early on, nevertheless the quality of the writing kept me interested to the end. I have already ordered bok two.
I have read all Kylie Brand's books. I think this book was more scary than others. The story had many twists and unexpected turns. This book is worth reading.
Getting inside the mind of a killer is never easy. Kylie Brant goes all in in Cold Dark Places acquainting two women who share a similar past, Cady Maddix and Eryn Pullman. One patient's release is timed with the escape of a man who has been deemed criminally insane. Full of twists and turns. Loved the agencies working together instead of at odds. Ms. Brant did an amazing job of writing about the US Marshal Service. Loved Miguel and the relationship they had between them. I think my favorite parts were the dialogue between them and Cady going home and setting up her own alarm system, then buying Hero. In between Cold and Dark there was some comedic relief and Hero literally getting a bite on an intruder had me smiling. Such a satisfying conclusion. Can't wait for book two of the series. Well done.
This novel has twisted characters as well as strong but damaged ones, a story that grabs you, and a few surprises—an amazing read.Instead of numbering the chapters, Ms. Brant has used the names of several of the characters. I found this to be very helpful, especially “Eryn: Then†and “Eryn: Nowâ€. I am so glad that Cady Maddix will be the main character in more novels—she is so easy to like and admire, especially considering what she endured as a child. I have pre-ordered the next book in this series...without knowing the storyline.
This book had everything you would want in a thriller, great characters that are well developed and a story that draws you in captures you in a net of intrigue. There are plenty of threads that the author weaves around you until the very end when the final picture is unveiled with plenty of twists in between. Grab it and enjoy!
Just another reason why I set reminders for the release date of the next new novel by Kylie Brant, this story is gripping from the first few opening pages right until the last few. Man, this lady can write twisted and demented! The subject matter is disturbing as they often are in her novels, but a true storytellers keeps you coming back over and over again. Can’t wait for the next installment of US Marshall Maddix.
Good story about a young girl who thought she had killer her mother so she was sent to a mental facility and did not get out for years end when she does all hell breaks loose.
Great book easy to read. Liked all of the characters and how they interacted. Surprise ending especially who the killer was.
