Amazon.com Review

A timeless classic in how complex information should be presented graphically. The Strunk & White of visual design. Should occupy a place of honor--within arm's reach--of everyone attempting to understand or depict numerical data graphically. The design of the book is an exemplar of the principles it espouses: elegant typography and layout, and seamless integration of lucid text and perfectly chosen graphical examples. Very Highly Recommended.

#464,757 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought this book as it was recommended reading by an excel MVP (I'm on a bit of an excel learning binge) in addition to a few others by Stephen Few. Though the cover of this book was the most "bland" of them all I ended up reading the intro and the first chapter and becoming very interested in the ideas on the visual presentation of (quantitative) data, particularly the graphic showing the number of troops that Napoleon started and ended with on his campaign into Russia (I wasn't even sure of what multi-variate data was but I soon gained an appreciation for its proper presentation). As each chapter went on I became even more interested in the material that was presented as it seemed very logical and intuitive. I especially enjoyed Professor Tufte's guidelines on maximizing the "data-ink" and minimizing "non data-ink", and was amazed at how he applied these guidelines to graphs I have been using and teaching for many years, making them seem simpler and not as cluttered even if he suggested the "unthinkable" by leaving out gridlines or piece of the axes.I must admit that I am a bit skeptical about leaving out grid-lines when I produce graphs in excel but I appreciate that making them lighter really helps to de-clutter a graph. But I was totally blown away by how he simplified box and whisker diagrams into quartile plots and how he even removed portions of the vertical and horizontal axis making the graphs easier to read and somewhat more informative.I'd love to teach these principle to my students (I'm a private tutor) but I know that their in-school teachers would not allow their use as the syllabuses are somewhat antiquated (as are some of the teachers, their beliefs, and methods). They'd probably lose their minds about what Professor Tufte says about pie charts :-D, which, by the way is not to use them as there are better ways to present data. "The only thing worse than one pie chart is more pie charts".All in all, as someone who's not from a design or art background and with a bit of a background in maths I thoroughly enjoyed this book, its principles, insights, and suggestions, and though it may not be everyone's cup of tea I would readily suggest it to anyone who has more than a passing interest in graphics especially if they're presenting quantitative data. The principles are logical and intuitive, and I really do think that the presentation of graphics should (like anything) be taught well (eschew the decorations/ducks!)This book is invaluable and has awakened my thirst for more knowledge.I'm looking forward to reading more!

When my grumpy old-man co-worker recommended I read Tufte, I expected some outdated textbooks. This is more of a long form exposé on how to have your analytics taken seriously. 10/10, would buy again (I already bought his other two books)

I do a lot of work conveying information to leaders and technical people and wanted to move away from PowerPoint, using data in a “native” format. This book is about efficient design and layout. It does a great job conveying principles for clear and precise communication. It’s a bit dated, coming from an era when all charts and graphs were made by hand, but principles don’t shift. A reference I will use again and again.

Perhaps the single most accessible book on data visualizations. You are given a tour of the history of visualizations, the seminal contributions of people such as Playfair, Tukey, and others, a rogues' gallery of sorts of awful visualizations, a peek into small-multiples visualizations, and an exposition of the principles of good graphic design and visualizations. A must-have book for anyone interested in good data visualizations.Tufte's contention is that a lack of adequate knowledge and expertise and a mistaken notion about numbers are to blame for bad visualizations. The principles of good visualizations, on the other hand, are few and simple. The book is all about exposing bad examples and enunciating these good principles, beautifully illustrated with examples, and printed on excellent quality paper.Suggested Reading:-----------------Supplement this excellent book with at least the following, if you are interested in digging deeper into the area of data visualizations:- Information Visualization, Second Edition: Perception for Design (Interactive Technologies)- Information Dashboard Design: The Effective Visual Communication of DataThe rest of the review can be best told, in my opinion, through quotes from the book:---------------------------------------------------------"The theory of the visual display of quantitative information consists of principles that generate design options... The principles should not be applied rigidly or in a peevish spirit... and it is better to violate any principle than to place graceless or inelegant marks on paper. Most principles of design should be greeted with some skepticism." [page 191]While seemingly a trivial matter, the issue of the size of charts, whether they should be tall or horizontal, Tufte states that "Graphics should tend toward the horizontal, greater in length than height..." and "Many graphics plot, in essence (cause and effect) and a longer horizontal helps to elaborate the workings of the causal variable in more detail." [pages 186, 187]Time-series displays are at their best for big data sets with real variability. [page 30]Chapter 2, "Graphical Identity" Is a stunning collection of graphs that distort, lie, deceive, and exhibit all manners of skills other than those required for data visualizations."Much of twentieth-century thinking about statistical graphics has been preoccupied with the question of how some amateurish chart might fool the naive viewer. ... At the core of the preoccupation with deceptive graphics was the assumption that data graphics were mainly devices for showing the obvious to the ignorant. ... The assumption led down two fruitless paths in the graphically barren years from 1930 to 1970: First, that graphics had to be "alive", "communicatively dynamic," overdecorated and exaggerated.. Second, that the main task of graphical analysis was to detect and denounce deception." [page 53]"A graphic does not distort if the visual representation of the data is consistent with the numerical representation." [page 55]Which leads to his definition of the term, "Lie Factor", which he defines as the "size of the effect shown in graphic" divided by "size of effect in chart"."Another way to confuse data variation with design variation is to use areas to show one-dimensional data" [page 69]An example cited is the depiction of "the rate of inflation", for which, "graphs show currency shrinking on two dimensions, even though the value of money is one-dimensional." [page 70]A very important observation quoted in Chapter 3 comes from Howard Weiner - "Perhaps the reason is an increase in the perceived need for graphs ... without a concomitant increase in training in their construction." [page 79]Tufte elaborates: "Nearly all those who produce graphics for mass publication are trained exclusively in the fine arts and have had little experience with the analysis of data. ..." "... many graphic artists believe that statistics are boring and tedious. It then follows that decorated graphics must pep up, animate, and all too often exaggerate what evidence there is in the data." [page 79]And "The doctrine of boring data serves political ends, helping to advance certain interests over others in bureaucratic struggles for control of a publication's resources. ... as the art bureaucracy grows, style replaces content. And the word people, having lost space in the publication to data decorators, console themselves... " [page 80]Tufte defines "data-ink" in Ch 4 ("Theory of Data Graphics") as "the non-erasable core of a graphic, the non-redundant ink arranged in response to variations in the numbers representedData-ink ration = data-ink / total ink used to print the graphic" [page 93]So, it should not come as a surprise, when Tufte takes a single bar with a value label at the top of the bar, and states that "the labeled, shaded bar of the bar chart, for example, unambiguously locates the altitude in size separate ways." [page 96].Chapter 5 - "Charkjunk: Vibrations, Grids, and Ducks" is perhaps the most humorous chapter, as the title itself suggests. A quote from Johnathan Swift, indicting 17th-century cartographers, says it all - "With save pictures fill their gaps, And o'er unhabitable downs, Place elephants for want of towns." [page ] ouch!"This may well be the worst graphic ever to find its way into print:" [page 118] refers to a "series of weird three-dimensional displays appearing in the magazine American Education in the 1970s (that) delighted connoisseurs of the graphically preposterous. Here five colors report, almost by happenstance, only five pieces of data..." [page 118]You may not, and I certainly did not agree with Tufte's suggestions for maximizing the data-ink efficiency of the box-plot, in the chapter on "Data-ink Maximization", but they are worth examining nonetheless. However, his redesign of the bar chart, with a border and other accouterments, on pages 126-128, are excellent. Many examples of bad visualizations cited in the book are from the "New York Times", so it is sort of reassuring when you see that the quality of visualizations on the NYT has improved a lot, and are frequently the objects of animated discussions. There may be hope, after all.The review title, explained, at least part thereof:--------------------------------------------------And what about that slightly inappropriate word in the title of the review?Tufte writes that an art director with overall responsibility for the design of over 3,000 graphics annually had this to say - "graphics are intended to more to lure the reader's attention away from the advertising than to explain the news in any detail. 'Unlike the advertisements,' he said, 'at least we don't put naked women in our graphics.' " [page 80] We must be all thankful for small mercies, I suppose.

It is also likely the most successful book about dataViz ever. Like many, it was the first book I ever read on the craft. Toady, I really luxuriate in how much praise Tufte gave to some really old work. I found Tufte’s ability to describe what is so magical about data storytelling to be way ahead of his time, almost poetic. My favorite line is the very last one in the book, “the task of the designer is to give visual access to the subtle and the difficult—that is, the revelation of the complex.”I do not believe his advice on how to do it has weathered as well as his ability to describe how wonderful it is when it is done well. In the end, I was surprised by how few notes I took on this book. I found his later book Envisioning Information (1990) to be much more interesting, especially his way of describing micro/macro readings, small multiples, and “narratives of space and time.”

OK. You need to be Einstein to get much out of this. Heavy duty math and simulations take most of the joy out of trying to get into it quickly, but no doubt a worthwhile read -- if you have the time and patience.

perfect

Product as advertised, excellent quality, rapid delivery, this is great! Thanks.

I used this book for my graduate class of Antennas instead of the 3rd. edition because of the big price difference,

Great book. I bought it for my PE preparation.

It's a UCLA Physics textbook. Phd. level material.

AN EXCELLENT PRESENTATION OF THR SUBJECT

The book can be considered an extended foray into the use of Maxwell's Equations. The authors show, essentially ab initio, how you can start from those equations and understand how an antenna works. And how different antennas are optimised for different purposes.Antennas are described for both transmitting and receiving. There is also a chapter on the advanced idea of antenna synthesis. Here, one starts with a given radiation pattern, and derives a combination of antennas suitable to produce [transmit] or detect it.The maths treatment involves extensive use of three dimensional vector analysis and surface and volume integrals. Elegant treatments. But the student had better be well prepared.

This book shows lots of cool rocks on the cover. Inside its boring and has none of the Pretty rocks inside. Title is world geology. I would request a refund !

Nice book for kids. It has a lot of pictures and descriptions what that is. We enjoyed the book and I recommend. For centuries, stone has been used by nearly all civilizations. Each corner of the world and each layer of earth yields a multitude of stone varieties, and a uniqueness within each stone.Stone is a natural solid formation of one or many minerals. There are thousands of types of stone that have been quarried through the centuries. Quarries are located all around the world. A majority of natural stone comes from Italy, Spain, Turkey, United States, Mexico, China, Taiwan, India, Greece, Canada, France, and Brazil. The minerals in stone came from the same liquid and gas minerals that formed the earth. The Earth developed as a massive body of gas and liquid minerals that slowly cooled and condensed to a solid core. Through pressure, the Earth's crust began to form and heavy minerals were forced down to the core of the Earth where they were trapped. As the crust got thicker, it squeezed around the inner core which created intense pressure and heat from within the Earth. Crystals and other solid forms began to grow from the mineral vapors that were being released. As the Earth's crust began to expand and erode, heat and pressure pushed the solid minerals up to the Earth's surface which formed colossal rock beds. It took up to one-hundred million years to form some of these beds. Many of the beds are now used as quarries where the stone is mined.I received this item discounted in exchange for my testing, inspecting and reviewing it. I received no compensation for my review and state my honest and unbiased opinion of the product. My words, images and the rating I provide are my own and my overall analysis of this particular product is where I stand based on what the listing contained upon ordering it, what I received with this product and my personal experience with this product. Thank you for reading it!

I ordered this book because my daughter has always had an interest in rocks and minerals. The cover made me very excited to see what this book has to offer. I thought that I would be learning about pretty colored rocks and minerals pictured on the cover but there was not information on any of these beautiful rocks. The electronic version of this book is only 18 pages long. I wish it was longer and covered more rocks than what it did. It covered such things as limestone, granite, gold, silver, aluminum and diamonds. The pictures are what make this book worth getting. The are beautiful and detailed. The information provided is sound and easy for a child to understand. If you are looking for easy information for children to understand on a few basic types of rocks then this book is worth getting. If you are looking for information on the beautiful rocks shown on the cover you will be disappointed.I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book “Rocks and Minerals of the World” belongs to a Children’s book series published by Speedy Publishing. We love Speedy Publishing Children’s book series as they usually come with excellent photos and basic references that are quite suitable for the underage, for those small family members at home, for those parents who love to teach their children at home and this type of books serve well for teaching purposes at school too. This book refers to rocks and minerals on which it is established that all rocks are made of two or more minerals, but minerals are not made of rock.Beautiful photographs and short references about the Granite (igneous rock), Limestone (sedimentary rock), Marble (metamorphic rock), Aluminum, Gold, Silver, Diamond and many more fun facts that are well depicted on this book with high definition photographs in full color. As this book has beautiful, full colored, high detailed, photographs/pictures you may want to share with your kids and/or students as they can serve as point for further discussions or a way to develop language skill by promoting the children to express themselves about what they see and understand by looking at the photograph or picture.

The book “Rocks and Minerals of The World: Geology for Kids - Minerology and Sedimentology” is one of the books in a series of educational books written by Professor Baby and published by Speedy Publishing. This book, which is a part of the “Children's Rocks & Minerals Books” series, provides children with a chance to learn about science in a fun and exciting way. These books are filled with exceptional photographs and content geared towards capturing a child's attention span. Easy and fun to read! These books are excellent for use in the classroom or at home. Excellent tool to help children not only learn about science, but it helps to encourage them to read as well. This colorful short book provides children with a brief overview of what rocks and minerals are and where they can be found. Beautiful, detailed, colored photos along with age appropriate descriptions and fun facts about igneous rocks like granite, sedimentary rocks like Limestone, Metamorphic rocks like marble, the different kinds of metal, gold, silver and diamonds can all be found in this book. These books are great conversation starters for children. The beautiful pictures open up a dialogue for children to express what they see and what they understand by looking at the photographs. Finally, a good tip for parents- these books are great for bedtime! Quick and easy to read, while also providing a little education to your child.I viewed the Kindle version of this book. I was able to successfully download and open the book with my Kindle App with no problems or difficulty. I received this book at a discount in exchange for my honest review. I haven’t received any kind of compensation and I am not required to give a good review. I am also not associated with the seller or publisher in any way. This was my second attempt at an EKG book, the first used many medical terms that I wasn't familiar with and made it difficult to read, so I gave up on it. This book on the other hand made the learning process bearable thanks to frequent comical references that made the read easy and fun in a sense. Very informative and thorough but broken down with a systematic approach to interpret 5-lead and 12-lead ekg's, with the "whys" to why things look the way they do and what it really means. As a working nurse, this book has given me confidence in interpreting basic telemetry and the daunting 12-Lead EKG. Highly recommend.

CHAPTER 1   The Search       Know what to answer a skeptic. —Talmud   For the last few years, I have had a continuing debate with my son Joshua. By the age of eight, Josh had already completed five years of biblical study. He had been taught to relate to the Bible in its most literal sense, and so for him, and for many of his teachers, the age of the universe is exactly the age derived from the generations as they are listed in the Bible. This comes to approximately 57 centuries. For them, the cosmological estimate of the age of the universe, some 15 billion years, is a preposterous fiction. According to a literal reading of the Bible, six days is stated as the time between “the beginning” and the appearance of man—and six days it is. As we shall learn, the forebears of this same biblical tradition were well aware that a theology devoid of knowledge of the physical universe was (and is) a contradiction in terms. The implications of general relativity and Doppler shifts in light are an essential part in understanding the opening chapters of Genesis. Although the insights provided by modern science have yet to be assimilated by many contemporary teachers of Genesis, we shall find that they are a help rather than a hindrance toward the rapprochement of the secular and nonsecular.   The discrepancy between the 5700-year biblical age of the universe and the 15-billion-year scientific estimate might not have caused the family debate that led me to write Genesis and the Big Bang had there not been one, almost extraneous, circumstance in our lives. That circumstance was a nearby archaeological dig.   For three years we lived in Zikhron Ya’aqov, a village on the Carmel range overlooking Israel’s coastal plain. The plain is bounded on the west by the Mediterranean. A few kilometers inland from the shore, the massive limestone outcrop of the Carmel range rises abruptly to form the plain’s eastern boundary. It is a wonderfully productive area. This is especially true of the region between Zikhron Ya’aqov and Haifa. Here rows of avocado and orange trees, heavy with foliage and fruit, border the blue-green waters filling acres of fishponds. These ponds share space with white-specked fields of cotton. The productivity of the area is probably not new. Archaeological evidence indicates that this land has provided its material abundance to man and his predecessors for tens of thousands of years.   A few kilometers north of our village, among scrub growth halfway up the steep face of Mt. Carmel, the yawning black openings of several particularly large caves appear as sentinels overseeing the coast. On two or three occasions, my family and I have scrambled up Mt. Carmel to explore the archaeological digs within the caves. It is these digs that are the source of my continuing debate with Josh.   Here artifacts and fossils of that prehistoric animal, Neanderthal man, have been found. For the theologian steeped in a superficial reading of Genesis, these fossils may be Neanderthal, but they have nothing to do with man!   For the paleontologist, the age of the fossils also presents a problem, but of a different sort. The bones of Neanderthal man are too old to date using carbon-14 methods. So much of the original skeletal carbon-14 has decayed (one-half the original content decays radioactively each 5,600 years) that the small amount of carbon-14 remaining cannot be reliably measured. The bones’ location within geologically known strata gives them an estimated age of 60,000 years.4 For Josh and for many other people, Jew and Christian alike, a 60,000-year archaeological history is at least 54,000 years in error. It is totally at odds with a literal understanding of the opening chapters of the book of Genesis.   But this discord between archaeology and theology is neither necessary nor valid. As I have studied the details of biblical and scientific texts, I have reached what was for me an enlightening and unexpected conclusion: The biblical narrative and the scientific account of our genesis are two mutually compatible descriptions of the same, single, and identical reality. My goal in this book is to explain that compatibility to expert and layperson alike.   Simply stated, I will discuss here the first week of Genesis. To the literalist, these first six days can be a problem. Fossils place the appearance of beings with humanlike features at well over the 60,000-year age of the Neanderthal fossils of the Carmel caves. Although dating the time of Peking man’s existence has the same types of problems as those encountered when dating the remains of Neanderthal man, the archaeological estimate is that these humanlike animals lived some 300,000 years ago. Their home, near Cho-k’ou-tien, China, was in a group of limestone caves quite similar to those found in the Carmel range. Homo erectus, the genus and species to which Peking man belonged, made its appearance 1.5 to 2 million years ago. Because of this antiquity, only a few nearly complete Homo erectus skeletons have been found. One of these, located in what is now an arid region of Kenya, is the Lake Turkana Boy. It is estimated that the lad lived his twelve years of life 1.6 million years ago. Looking at this fossil, it is clear that, except for the shortened forehead, these early hominids had features so similar to modern humans that they could go unnoticed if they walked on a busy city street.   But does mankind’s history really stretch back a million years, or even several tens of thousands of years? A strictly literal view of the Bible would say no. To the literalist, there was no prehistoric man. Adam was the first man and he was formed some 5700 years ago from the dust of the Earth (Gen. 2:7).   Part of the contradiction between archaeological evidence and biblical tradition is semantic, originating in the use of the word man. Archaeologists use the term to describe prehistoric animals that had some, but not necessarily all, of the features of modern man. Biblically speaking, the term man is applicable only to Adam and his progeny. It is, however, no secret that the divergent views of science and tradition are based on differences far more fundamental than the definition of words. In fact, most biblical commentators accept that the meaning of words of the Bible, especially as in the creation story, must be understood in accordance with their context. The terms for water, darkness, wind, heavens, and earth as used in the first ten verses of Genesis have meanings that are quite different when used later on in the Bible. It is the calendar of the early universe that raises a discrepancy far more difficult to explain than the variances in terminology.   Entire herds of fossilized rhinoceroses, their calves nestled between their legs in nursing position, have been dated by the potassium-argon content of the volcanic ash that buried them, as having lived 10 million years ago. Dinosaurs have been firmly established, at least according to paleontologists’ data, to have roamed the Earth for 100 million years, becoming extinct some 65 million years ago. The simplest forms of life, the early prokaryotic (nucleus-free) bacteria and blue-green algae, make their first fossil appearance in earliest sedimentary rocks. These are dated as being 3 to 4 billion years old. The oldest rocks are only some 600 million years older. These are the original igneous rocks.   The length of this fossil record certainly seems to contradict the relatively brief period of creation and genesis presented by the Bible. And yet the fossil record covers only a fraction of the age that current cosmological observations ascribe to our universe. Where do the preponderance of paleontological and astronomical data, indicating an Earth some 4.5 billion years old and a universe that reaches back 10 to 20 billion years, fit into traditional biblical scholarship? At first it would appear that these findings put paleontology hopelessly at odds with the Bible. For the total cosmic evolution from the creation (the “In the beginning …” of Genesis 1:1) to the appearance of Adam gets only a bit more than five biblical days.   As an affirmation of faith, the literalist can explain the paleontological finds as having been placed in rocks at creation by the Creator. They might be there to satisfy man’s need to rationalize the nature of the world, or to test man’s belief in the biblical narrative. This argument, while impossible to disprove, is the weakest of reeds (Isa. 36:6) in a world full of explosive and convincing discovery.   Some theologians argue that the methods of paleontological dating are flawed. These methods depend on measurements of radioactive decay. They claim that the rates of decay today are not the same as in prehistoric times. If this were true, the ages of fossils or rocks could not be estimated from current measurements of radioactivity.

This is the best treatment I’ve seen of the topic of reconciling Genesis with the scientific data that the universe is 13.7 Billion years old. Although the book is self contained, those not previously exposed to Einstein’s Theories of special and general relativity may struggle with some parts of this book. Those theories are explained, but the treatment is brief for those not already familiar Einstein’s work. The author is a Jew, and it is amazing that he cites ancient Jewish sages that figured out Genesis centuries before Einstein was even born.I seldom recommend books, but I can endorse this one for those who are willing to put a little effort into the reading. If you are already comfortable with Relativity theory this is not a difficult book. It is not a Science book, but offers a compelling interpretation of Genesis that completely reconciles the Biblical account with modern science. The book is orthodox in that it does consider Adam to be the first human. The book also demonstrates that the Biblical and Archaeological timelines agree for all events AFTER the creation of Adam. For this reason, it says nothing that would offend a Young Earth Creationist. To oversimplify, the Genesis account can be taken literally for all events AFTER the creation of Adam. Events prior to that, however must take into account the effect of Relativity on the observers perception of elapsed time. The book agrees 100% with the order of events of Creation, and explains the seeming difficulties such as light being created before the Sun.I’m familiar with most of the attempts to reconcile the Genesis account with Science, but this is the only one I’ve seen that doesn’t have holes. I again repeat my surprise that Jewish Sages arrived at essentially the same interpretation of the Genesis creation account hundreds of years before the scientific rationale was known.

Eye opening and brings Christian and Jewish insights together. Best part - harmonizes the 6 days of creation with the 14 billion year age of the universe. Those calculations are left out of the book but he strongly hints at it. You can go online to discover the space-time versus “earth-time” Resolution in his post there. Read this book! It will help end the snarky whining of skeptics who don’t get it

When Torah and natural science seem to conflict, one or the other is being incorrectly interpreted. That's the principle Gerald Schroeder propounds and defends in this remarkable volume. And I can only think that Moses Maimonides would have been delighted. What Schroeder argues, basically, is that the biblical account of creation in six days can be read as taking place over six _literal_ days -- and that not only does this reading fail to conflict with modern science, indeed science itself supports that reading. The solution? The six days are "God's time," reckoned from within one frame of reference, and the millions of years with which science deals are "earth time," reckoned from within another. The two are reconciled by the theory of relativity. Moreover, this reading is firmly grounded in traditional Jewish texts that predated the theory of relativity by one or two thousand years.I'll let Schroeder fill you in on the details. But whether those details are sound or not, his _approach_ is refreshingly sane.On the one hand, we have various sorts of Bible-thumper insisting that all our knowledge must come from the Word of God and nothing else -- an insistence that turns easily into anti-intellectual ranting against science. On the other, we have various sorts of scientistic yahoo insisting that religion is bunk and science is the royal road to truth.Rubbish, on both counts. The Torah does indeed bear signs that it is a Divine communication, and people who believe this are being entirely reasonable. (See, e.g., Lawrence Kelemen's _Permission To Receive_ for a defense of this view.) However, the Bible itself insists that human beings are made in the Divine image, that rationality is that very image, and that the "natural" universe provides abundant evidence of the workings of the Divine. And it is _this_ view, in one form or another, which -- as a matter of history and logic -- gave rise to modern science in the first place; without the "substrate" of rationalism implied by the view that the entire universe is the creation of a single rational Mind, "empirical" science can't even get started. There's no need to decide between the Bible and science; they can't really be separated anyway. So it may be that some of Schroeder's details require revision (and I understand that some of them are in fact revised in his next book, _The Science of God_). Nevertheless the lesson to learn from this book is still sound: that whenever science and Torah seem to be at odds with one another, the proper procedure is to suspend final judgment, think, and wait. Further information may provide unexpected resolutions.(And by the way, the review below picks on Schroeder for an absolutely ridiculous "error." The big, round figures used in those calculations aren't anywhere near precise enough to locate us in the "middle of the fifth day" as opposed to the sixth, and Schroeder doesn't say they are.)

Can you be a creationist and an evolutionist?Gerald Schroeder's answer, validated through the use of einstein's special and general relativity, fossil records, trends in biological organizations, and of course biblical statements and commentaries, is an astounding YES.How is it possible? The bible says the world was created in 6 days and in one day he rested. The answer is time dilation. What might be perceived as 6 24 hour days might actually have been reflective of a much longer timespan (15 billion years). And how do we explain the Neanderthal man or Homo erectus, when the bible tells us Adam and Eve were created 5768 years ago?The answer is Neshamah ("soul" in hebrew). God gave Adam and Eve soul, something that was not given to the earlier forms of man-like creatures. This book is filled with more interesting insight showing the mutual agreements between the biblical explanation for the creation of life, and the modern perspectives on origins of life as researched by modern physicists, chemists, and biologists.I highly recommend this book for those interested in origins of life and religion.

If you want to lead agnostics and atheists to Christ - you really ought to read this.

Just started reading but glad the book came nicely made.

Very informative.
