The gravest crimes in the State’s lexicon are almost invariably not invasions of private personor property, but dangers to its own contentment, for example, treason, desertion of a soldier to the enemy, failure to register for the draft, subversion and subversive conspiracy, assassination of rulers and such economic crimes against the State as counterfeiting its money or evasion of its income tax. Or compare the degree of zeal devoted to pursuing the man who assaults a policeman, with the attention that the State pays to the assault of an ordinary citizen. Yet, curiously, the State’s openly assigned priority to its own defense against the public strikes few people as inconsistent with its presumed raison d’etre.

Murray Rothbard is considered by many of his devout followers the father of Libertarianism. This short read (only about 55 pages) dissects the role of the state and its intended purpose in the eyes of the author. As someone who has been both influenced and intrigued by the Libertarian ideology, I felt this was certainly a book I had to read. Most people outside of Libertarian circles would find this book quite extreme and I can understand why. However, from a 40,000 ft view and looking at history as a credible example, it is quite shocking to see how many people have been killed and exterminated through forced state actions such as war, domestic police and military brutality, as well as seizure of economic resources at the hands of the state. I am still finding my way when it comes to what the role of the state should be if any. I do find either extremes of total state control or no state control very worrying though.

I am someone who is skeptical of the state and convinced that the state is far more interested in itself and those who are a part of the state than of the governed. This book confirms that view and points out how hard the state works to eliminate restraints put upon it and the propensity of the state to expand its powers. Along the way, the state and the governors give no thought to the governed except to evaluate how people will vote.I will interject current politics here. It appears the Obama not only abstained on the UN vote on the Israeli settlements, but after the resolution was pulled by Egypt, he manipulated some other countries to resurrect the bill so he could make sure the resolution would pass. Did Obama do that when there was a chance he could be punished by voters? Of course not. He waited until after the election so he could get his wishes with no personal repercussions. Did Obama care what the governed thought? Of course not. This is a prime example of how Rothbard views the state and the people who run the government.This book is for anyone who is skeptical of the state no matter what the form of government may be.

After reading anatomy of the state and other works from Rothbard, now I see where many of Ron Paul's ideas originate. They come from Rothbard, and Rothbard's ideas, at the same time, originate in Mises' interpretation of life in the world throughout the lens of Austrian Economics and individualism.If you identify yourself with Ron Paul, libertarianism, individualism and classical liberalism, then this is a book you need to read to know what we, as a civilization, are currently facing in the form of tyrannical governments, corrupt politicians and despotic ruling elites. Rothbard deconstructs many of those vague ideas and uncertain images we have about how things are and how things should be, to provide us with, instead, a very clear target of what's wrong in this world and how we can respond to those who threaten our freedom to think, do, and be.I highly recommend this book. But be warned, if you decide to go ahead and read it, your views on humanity and your own perspective of reality will be forever changed and there will be no coming back. And that, in this case, will always be good news, as keeping things the way we are will doom us all eventually,

In this day and age of the deep state, we all begin to wonder what it is all about.Mr. Rothbard starts with fundamentals and shows us where we need the state, AND WHERE WE DON'T NEED IT. Individual freedom for all is the objective. It starts with the individual.Each individual works to supply himself and his family. Without government at all levels taking huge chunks of each individual's wealth, we could all happily supply ourselves. The government cannot give to any person except what it has first stolen from others i.e. taxed. Who knows what great things we might have if the government had not stepped in front and taxed. Even items like roads could be worked out without government -- if the government had not stepped in front and seized OUR wealth.There is plenty to think about in this short book.

I had a copy years ago and it ended up misplaced .. Over the years many discussions surrounding the confederacy were just made up crazy bull. Having a copy of the confederate constitution .It is a slam dunk when liberals know it all. and have no facts .. See them run , hide, change the topic of discussion.

I love the book because I love the Confederacy and my Confederate ancestors and it has a great insight to some good ideas that need to be added to our U.S. constitution. And it's good to know we outlawed slave trade.

This should be required reading for schools.

interesting information that I didn't know and have NEVER heard spoken about - VERY STRONG on INDIVIDUAL and State's Rights

Being from Charleston, SC, I really needed to clarify for myself what the Civil War was truly all about. This clearly did so for me at last.

An excellent historical document expertly preserved. This is a work that every Southerner and historian should read. Moreover, critics and supporters of the War for Southern Independence may learn much from this document.

I found this to be highly informative. The Confederate Constitution pretty much paralleled the Federal Constitution with some improvements, but it pretty much had the same flaws as the Constitution it was patterned on. For instance, the Confederate Constitution made slavery an overt rather than an implied institution, but it restricted the trafficking of slaves to the slave States still in the Union and between the States making up the Confederacy. The Confederate Constitution expressly forbade its Congress to spend money on internal improvements or anything to benefit any industrial concern. It allowed expenditures for post offices and postal roads, but expressly states that all revenue used to deliver the mails and maintain the postal infrastructure come from the revenues generated by the postal service itself. One key difference between this Constitution and the original US constitution is that it allowed the State Legislatures to vote for the impeachment of any Federal Judge or other officer operating inside its borders. Like the original Constitution, the Confederate Constitution has a fuzzy definition of citizenship, one that I expected to have been made clear by a society that practiced slaveholding. It also does not give a clear definition of the term elector, just as the original Constitution fails to do. Another difference is that the Confederate President is limited to a singly term of six years, but the Confederate Vice-President is allowed to hold his office for as many terms as he cares to run for.There are other significant differences between the Confederate Constitution and the original Constitution that we live under today, but there is insufficient room to cover them here. Just understand that it is worthwhile exercise to compare the two documents.

I was born and raised in the south learning about the civil war just by purchasing this book helps me realize that I wasn't taught anything at all. The fact that the Confederate States of America had a constitutional is amazing. I say to anyone purchase this book it's worth it.

I love this series and I really loved this installment! I'm typically not really into Revolutionary War stories because it was a war that meant freedom for some and not others, but I enjoyed this one because Lafayette was such a dynamic and fun character, truly an adventure and battle seeker. And it felt like this was one of the more understandable story arcs, not confusing at all. Though I do think the author could be better about tracking dates throughout, or making sure there's a recent date marker if a year is randomly mentioned in the narrative. Also, it's cool to see the artwork get better and tighter as the series goes on. Looking forward to learning what the next book topic will be.

My ten year old has been looking forward to Nathan Hale's latest book for months. We were so excited to have "Lafayette" delivered on the release date. My son read it cover-to-cover in one long sitting. It was blissful to have a night of family reading time, and not even a hint of asking for screen time. Each book in the Hazardous Tales series has enthralled my son. I give these books to parents of his friends that are trying to find the right "hook" to get their kids to enjoy reading. My kid is a history buff and these books really speak to his interest. If anyone can recommend other series of a similar vein, I'm all ears! In the meantime, this will be read over and over again, and we will not-so-patiently await Nathan Hale's next project!

My kids and I have been hooked on these that we have had the library copies continuously checked out and decided we should probably buy copies of our own. This graphic novel covers Lafayette's early life through the end of the American Revolutionary War. My favorite effect of a Hazardous Tale is that it gets my 7 and 9 year old interested in learning more about the subjects Mr. Hales covers. They went and looked up the rest of Lafayette's amazing life story after the American Revolution. I hope that part of the his tale can be told by Mr. Hale in the future. Can't wait for more!

My son waits for each book to come out from this author and devours every one in a day's time. This book is no exception. All of Nathan Hale's books can be read and re-read as so many details cover each page. What an inspiring author! Thanks for helping my kid love history!

My 9 year old has been waiting all summer for this to come out after having read all the previous Hazardous Tales last spring. He loved Lafayette and is already rereading it. Thank you for helping my son learn to love to read. Can’t wait for more Hazardous Tales!!

It was as funny and snarky as Nathan Hale's books usually are, but Ethan Allen was in for one of two panels in the long awaited Benedict Arnold backstory,and he was portrayed as a bufoonish egotistical drunkard again, which is out of character. For more information,look up Ethan Allen, and you will learn tons of interesting facts K three to scratch the surface of in this, but I accidentally deleted it.

My 10 and 12 year old children read books 1-5 in short order. They both read the series in about a week and then displayed the books on their shelf -- a place of honor :). Both my kids are good readers, but they're somewhat picky about what they like. This series might be good for kids who liked Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dragonbreath, and/or Dogman.

My son loves these books. Wish there were more of them. He retains a lot of the historical story and book holds his attention. Great way to encourage boys to read.

Originally I rented this book’s audio edition from my library so I could listen to it while exercising. Loved the book so much that I purchased the hardcover.This may be Seth Godin’s best book , even better than the ‘purple cow’. And, yes, It is Godin’s book because he conceived the idea and talked all 33 (or better: 32 + himself) into writing this book. The book’s concept is a genius. The topic is the Big Moo, which cannot be defined by one single person. The Big Moo is not a riddle but the fluent four dimensional quality of an extreme purple cow, which keeps on having purple calves (“the calves” are my personal definition, Godin does not say so in his book). Logically according to their different home environments and (business) circumstances, these calves need different “nourishments to grow”, just like Austrian or Swiss cows who live on high pastures eat different foods than cows in the flatlands of the Netherlands, Indian ‘holy’ cows, or even yaks in Nepal or Tibet.By inviting so many different brilliant contributors, Godin circles the topic, allows different concepts, perspectives, and facets to shine, which together create the puzzle of a portrait of the Big Moo, a purple cow which keeps having calves.My favorite stories (I listened to them three times)• How to be a failure• This is your first test• The remarkable Gertrude Bell• The one thing you can’t download• Ten Things Smart Start-ups Know• Fire the GatekeepersBittersweet was the story, “Tear down this wall”. For people who have read my other reviews, or heard me speak, you will know I have a great fondness for author Seth Godin. I have read his books for years, and his thoughts and messages are always valuable. He certainly is not the deepest thinker when it comes to marketing, but he does offer a fresh approach as to how to effectively get your message heard. The Big Moo is a Seth Godin edited book. He invited 33 business, marketing, thought leaders, etc. to write a short essay (usually 1-2 pages each) on how they think businesses will prosper in the next five, ten, fifteen years. Seth never does anything in the norm, and this book is no exception. When you read the 33 essays, they are uncredited. While he does tell you who the 33 authors are, he does not tell you what they wrote. I'm not sure what his purpose was, and I'm not sure it matters whether you know or don't know. It is just Seth being Seth. The message that the book puts forth is the fact that you, or your company, can't just be good, or even great. You have to be remarkable if you are going to stand out from the crowd. This is a quick read, and I do recommend it. As is true with all of Seth's books, if you walk away with one idea that helps make you remarkable, it is worth the $19.95 that you pay for the book. By the way, it should be mentioned that all of the profits generated by this book are going to charity, and none of the 33 thought leaders were paid for their essays.

The big Moo is a small book with short stories about "how to be remarkable". Each of the stories are written by one of the 33 'famous' authors and business 'gurus'. Some of the well known authors are Seth Godin, Malcolm Gladwell, Dan Pink, Tom Peters, etc etc.Some of the stories were interesting, most of them were somewhat average. A lot were like short motivational stories without a huge amount of insight. For insights, its probably better to pick up a book with a consistent theory supported by e.g. research studies.The most positive thing about the book is that all the income goes to 3 charities. From that perspective, its an ok book and buying it will be a good thing.All in all, worth reading, but not remarkable.

This book will motivate you to be remarkable, innovate, embrace change, take risks, and be awesome. Although some of the advices were worth their gold, I find most of the advices in this book too generic and vague.

I purchased this book prior to reading Purple Cow which wasn't a mistake per se, but I read a few pages of this then decided to purchase and read Purple Cow before ultimately tackling the Big Moo.Most of Seth Godin's work centers around a premise to get the reader to really think then eventually act on that thinking. This title is no different--it's a collection of essays compiled by some of the best marketing and business minds around in an attempt to get you to think about your current (or possibly a past) situation and what changes you may wish to make to become remarkable instead of ordinary.It's a quick read which delivers on its objective to generate actionable thought. It's also fun to try to figure out which author wrote each essay as he/she isn't identified for each.Highly recommended as a sequel to Purple Cow.

The book consists of 33 three short essays all written by different authors also known as The Group of 33. Each author provides an anecdote, a story or straight forward advice on how to transform yourself or your company from 'average' to 'remarkable'. Whether it's marketing, starting a business, or self-improvement, everyone will find something to ponder.It is a pleasure to read (multiple times) and makes a great gift. Personally, I have a dozen of bookmarks in this book, and every once in a while I re-read some of the essays for both motivation and to analyze and improve my priorities.

I bought this book a month ago and had to buy another copy to give to my parents. It's fantastic and really speaks to what pets need to be happy and stress-free. As a veterinarian myself, knowing pets are fearful of little things hurts my heart. They don't deserve to fear the world around them. This book will open your eyes to see what they see and feel what they feel. It provides easy and straightforward smart changes to help pets feel safe and secure in your home and in society. Love it!! Makes a great gift for anyone and everyone who loves animals.

This book has a lot to offer and Dr. Becker is well-respected. It also has 3 other contributors, all well-qualified. I was really looking forward to reading this book and I found it disappointing for two reasons:1. The first third or so is very repetitive as if it were written by 4 different people who didn’t consult with one another and so had no clue what came before.2. There isn’t much usable advice about how to deal with your dog’s fears.

I recently adopted a 5 year-old fearful dog. Although I've had dogs all my life I've never had a fearful one before. The authors of this book have developed a program to help owners, veterinarian staff and shelter employees utilize techniques designed to ease a dog's fears. The program would be most successful if everyone in the dog's life used it. (Note that it's a service marked (SM) program, so veterinarians have to actually take a course and become certified before they can use the Fear Free designation.) The book is useful and it would be wonderful if more dog professionals would take advantage of the program. But for a comprehensive book on fear based behaviors, with a wealth of information and suggestions for the owner of a fearful dog, I highly recommend "Beyond Flight or Fight" by Sunny Webber.

We adopted a dog that was quite fearful. She went through some unpleasant situations in her prior home, suddenly found herself in a whole different environment due to a divorce, and no doubt had some genetic disposition to anxiety. We quickly learned that she was fearful and anxious, leading to a number of behaviors that were not good., for her or us. We have gone to the vet for medications and to trainers where we learned new training techniques. This book puts everything into perspective, especially from the dog's point of view, and explains why the recommended training techniques work. It really is a must read for anyone dealing with an anxious or fearful dog.

So disappointed with this purchase. Our new dog is terrified of everything so I was hoping for some insights and help on how to handle it. Unless your dog is afraid of thunderstorms, don’t bother getting this book. It says nothing about how to help a dog with fear issues. It tells you how to socialize a very young puppy to help avoid them but nothing on what to do if you’re past the 12 week old stage. I’m just trying to avoid medications and was hoping this book would offer something. Unfortunate it didn’t.

I had a copy of this book but order another one as a gift for friends who have two young American bulldogs. I like the easy to follow advice and the "whys" of raising dogs in this fear free manner. I was raised in a rural part of the country, where sadly, pets were disposable, and unless they were good hunting dogs, their lives were not easy. I saw dogs live in fear all their lives. Thank God people are changing and many of the old ways of thinking are changing. Fear free respects pets and the people who love them.

A great tool in understanding your fearful dog’s behaviorI read Dr. Becker’s book with great anticipation. The subject matter couldn’t be more on point. As a handler and tester/observer of therapy dogs, this book helped me fill in the blanks of my thinking and understanding of fearful dogs. The book ought to be required reading in vet schools and distributed at all vet conventions. The book teaches the owner the importance of “positive punishment”. When you try to understand a dog’s fear, you can help them overcome it and turn the fear into the exact opposite, confidence. All vet clinics should be as pet considerate as Dr. Becker’s. I had to misfortune of leaving this book on an airplane not once, but twice after receiving it as a gift from my brother this past Christmas. During that time, naturally, I re-purchased it from Amazon a few times -- a somewhat comical cycle of repetitive book-purchasing.Even so, after receiving my third copy, I sat down and read the whole thing through in a sitting, and thoroughly enjoyed it. As the prologue dictates, this book is an entertaining series of vignettes in the life of John Muir that gives the reader a little more insight into the man and the broad mythology surrounding him. Whether it was stumbling about like a drunkard in an earthquake, 'riding' the trees in the wind, or descending a mountain on an avalanche, Muir had no shortage of incredible adventures that he was relentless in chronicling.This novel is a concise and very readable collection of some of Muir's best adventures; with helpful forewords by Lee Stetson to give context to each entry. While this doesn't tell the entire story of John Muir, this brief anthology gives the reader a delightful sense of how adventurous and brazen the man was, and leaves them wanting more.

Caution: do not try this at home!I was suspicious of this book when I originally got it as a gift, but now I've given two copies away. It combines a keen appreciation of nature (which should be no surprise given Muir's reputation) with a writing style as keen and vivid as the Sierra sun, plus a tremendous faith in the human spirit and particularly Muir's own ability to overcome difficult situations. A joy to read, in more ways than one.

This collection of stories certainly confirmed the title-some were hair raising! John Muir was able to convey his delight respect for Mother Nature along with his fearless, almost childlike trust that whatever he did was safe! I'm so glad that I read it before I went to Yosemite, I will be able to look through his eyes from my safe spot and enjoy the view much more.

Definitely worth a read, but not necessarily the best summary of each story. One interesting short story is someone else's account of one of John Muir's tales. It's great to hear two perspectives on the same adventure. I recommend the book, but not every story is captivating, so there may be better ones out there.

If you love Muir and wilderness you will love this book. Selections of his famous words and some truly lovely illustrations. I'd say this is an ideal book for that young nature lover in the family. Though really it can be a book for all ages.

Great gift for hiker or arm chair nature lover . Comfortable print size and layout design for easy read. Muir is a great landscape experience of primeval woodlands and mountains in North America. It doesn’t get any better.

Such a wonderful book! It is filled with short stories that are vividly told. My teenage daughter loves it and we also bought a copy for my 90 year old mother-in-law who couldn't book the book down when she stayed with us!

He is so eloquent and full of appreciation that it is hard to believe so much of the world was wrapped up in one man's head and heart . I am so impressed by how tough he is in surviving during the most stressful circumstances when it would be near impossible for most of us . He is inspirational.
