About the Author

Lisa Vaughn is an American social psychologist. While gaining her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati, she trained in group interaction and relationships, organizational development, teacher-learning processes, and women’s studies. Applying these disciplines to cultural studies–especially with Latino populations–she developed and led university study abroad programs to Guatemala from 2001 to 2005. She has lived and traveled in Guatemala for extended periods over the last six years, and has adopted a Guatemalan Mayan son. She is currently Associate Professor of Pediatrics at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

These Culture Smart books are not travel guides that tell you where to stay, eat, shop, etc. Instead they give you an overview of the history and culture of a country. It gives you just enough insight to appreciate the people and places you visit. There are some tips on how to respect the local values, how to stay safe, what the local food is like, how business is conducted, what mistakes to avoid, etc. It's a good book to read ahead of travel. It's not really a guide book to keep with you when you get there.

This the first travel book that I've purchased about Guatemala, so I am excited to learn! This is a beautiful book with lots of helpful culture and travel tips. Nice compact book that could easily fit into a pocket on a travel bag, purse, backpack, or carry-on bag. Happy travels!

Outstanding little bit to educate myself on Guatemala before heading out for a business/school trip. It provides a great deal of information on cultural norms, the history of the country, and relevant information to help you travel the country without offending natives in the process! Big fan of it and will order them for other countries as well.

Good stuff... the hooplah about clothing...for women...not so accurate.. moderate shorts and racerback tank with flip flops and a huge water bottle , 12 hour insect repellent..good to go.

I got this for my 11 yo son because they were going to read the first book for his 5th grade class and he loved it so much he wanted more and his own copy! Less then 3 weeks later he had finished the entire set:) So if you have a kid that you want to get into reading that likes the out doors this is the book set for them! I am going to barrow it to re read it because it has been a few years.

I read this book aloud to my children. They absolutely loved it, and so did I. Ms. George obviously enjoyed exploring all of the survival concepts she could think of, and she did a fine job telling the "story" of the possibilities in each situation. This is a teaching book, which is why it will always be a classic. It not only teaches survival concepts, but also responsibility and courageous stewardship.

Although this book is intended for young adults, I decided to get it even though I'm in my 50s. I'd read it when I was young and really enjoyed it. I kind of half expected to be disappointed....often things I liked as a youngster seem pretty lame now. This book, however, was still good. Some parts were a little, "Oh, yeah, right," but was mostly realistic. Would recommend it to anyone of any age.

I first read this book at school as an 8 year old. I never forgot the book "My side of the Mountain" or the name of the author. I still have my original copy, and to see it here for sale I had to have it. This book triggers the imagination, It boldly explores a boys desire for being in touch with nature and a simple life. This is a book everyone should read.

This is one of my favorite children's books. It is a throwback to a different time when vocabulary was rich and peppered the pages of children's literature. It is an excellent story of man and nature and ever so readable. Please, PLEASE buy this for your children and read it with them. Share with them a time when education was vastly more important and appreciated than today.

This was my favorite book as a child! My second grade teacher read this to us as part of reading class. She only read a chapter a day, so on a Friday,{ I couldn't wait until Monday}, I went to the library and checked the book out, and finished it over the weekend. To this day i can't understand why my teacher was so angry when i admitted this to her. Anyway, i bought this to read it to my granddaughter, and i hope she enjoys it as much as i did.

I read My Side of the Mountain when I was in junior high school, and I wanted to get this book for my son. I read it before I gave it to him, and I couldn't put it down. Each night I read one of the the trilogy and I remembered why I loved it so much as a kid. My son is in 2nd grade and now he is reading it too. He is young, but reads non stop so a novel isn't too much for him. I am so glad I finally own this book, it's a great book to turn kids onto reading, and it is a great book for all ages.

If you have boys between six and ten, you can't go wrong with this book. My boys are six and I took great pleasure in reading it to them. When my boys are ten, I have no doubt they'll take great pleasure reading it themselves.Lots of terrifi descriptions about something every young kid thinks about at least once (running away). Very, very well imagined and executed.Recommended without reservation.

Her personal story is inspiring to me. She teaches that your thoughts can be your best friend or your enemy! And how you can change a thought! For almost 20 years, Louise has been of great assistance to me in helping me get through some rough times and move on to a happier life. On this CD, she really explains how to heal yourself and this CD has been a big help to me!

Such an awesome recording!!! But it ruins it for me when the calming affirmations come to an end and I'm drifting to sleep only to be awoken by a startling publishing company announcement at the end. At least put it on a separate track so that I can program my player to stop before it comes on. Such a disappointing end to a great meditation.

FYI: I bought Self Healing: Creating Your Health cd by Louise Hay. The package and label of the cd is as shown on picture here on Amazon but when I play it on my pc it has a different picture and a different title as follows:_Forgiveness/Loving the Inner Child Visualization_Anger ReleasingI listened to the cd and it is a positive message with clear audio and as far as I can tell it is the Self Healing message.

This was so outstanding, I ordered 5 more to give as a gift. I am listening to this CD multiple times during the day andalso at night when I go to sleep. This is a must read and a true experience in self growth and healing.

The story pulled me in and I'm looking forward to where this goes with the MC.

I loved the epic scale of the story and the pay off after the harsh beginning for our main character. The beginning was a bit of a slog but understandable for the lesson it was trying to teach to the MC. I loved that this book focused on Amazons, essentially what we all love about characters like Wonder Woman and built on those fetishes, the cliffhanger was HUGE and I can’t wait for more!This is a promising new series.

Great book to overall thought the beginning was a bit weak. I would also love if there was anal ;). I’m looking forward for the sequel, and I hope it comes out as soon as possible.
