Great behind the scenes details of a satirical masterpiece

I love books about books and I love Graham Greene, so I was excited to find Christopher Hull’s Our Man Down in Havana, the story behind the inspiration and writing of Greene’s spy satire Our Man in Havana. Hull has clearly done his research, and he is obviously well-versed in Cuban history. This, however, was the problem with the book for me: there was just so much information presented that it often got bogged down in tiny details from Greene’s childhood, his years in Britain’s intelligence service during WWII, the history of Cuba—even what Greene ate on each of his visits to the island. I understand that some of this is necessary for an understanding of how Our Man in Havana reflected Greene’s experiences and the era in which he was writing, but I just thought tighter editing would have made the story clearer and elevated this book to the status of Lesley Blume’s Everybody Behaves Badly, about the writing of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. Still, the book was enjoyable for me as a fan of Greene and Our Man in Havana—which I would highly recommend reading before sitting down with this book.

Outrage is anger kicked up to 11.Contemporary Americans live in the Age of Outrage. We are outraged by what those on the “other side” of just about any political, cultural or religious issue say and do, and we take to social media to “destroy” them. Not dialogue civilly, let alone rebut or refute, but destroy.Outrage destroys.In Christians in the Age of Outrage, Ed Stetzer shows “how to bring our best when the world is at its worst,” as the subtitle puts it. The book is a tract for our times, and its author is the right person to share it. Stetzer holds the Billy Graham Distinguished Chair of Church, Mission, and Evangelism at Wheaton College. Like Graham — known to many as “America’s Pastor” — Stetzer wants American evangelicals to be “unifying forces in American life,” bringing people together around the gospel. The purpose of his book is “to help Christians move from contributing to the age of outrage to effectively engaging it with the gospel.”To accomplish that purpose, Stetzer looks at three broad topics. In Part 1, he examines “the two primary catalysts for our outrage”: “cultural forking” and “the technology discipleship gap.” Whereas American culture used to be nominally Christian, so that evangelicals found themselves in its mainstream, it is increasingly becoming post-Christian. Culture forked, in other words, and evangelicals now find themselves outside the mainstream. The new mainstream and the old mainstream eye each other distrustfully across the gap that divides them.Social media exacerbates that distrust. Face-to-face encounters usually keep things civil, but online, you can abstract your opponents’ ideas from the totality of their lives and then reduce them to that abstraction. Social media use too often succeeds in reducing people to straw men and then providing the match to light those straw men on fire. This results in a vicious cycle of caricature, outrage, counter-caricature, counter-outrage, and so on and so forth.In Part 2, Stetzer examines “four lies that reinforce and deepen our world’s anger.” They are:1. Christians are the worst!2. My outrage is righteous anger.3. _____ will save me from the outrage!4. Mission is optional.Some of these are lies that post-Christian America tells about Christian America. The others are lies Christians tell themselves. These lies distort clear thinking and rationalize bad behavior.Stetzer’s debunking of each of these lies is good, but I especially appreciated the distinction he drew between “righteous anger” and “outrage.” He writes:"Outrage exhibits few if any of the short- or long-term characteristics Scripture associates with righteous anger. Righteous anger is aimed at the glory of God,, but outrage is an angry reaction to personal injury or insult. Where righteous anger is purposeful and designed to advance specific objectives and ends, outrage exhibits little critical thought as to its underlying focus, motivations, expressions, or ends."Outrage is motivated by a desire to punish or destroy rather than reconcile or refine. It is frequently accompanied by hubris and a confidence in its judgment, categorically rejecting any nuance. Outrage is fast and decisive rather than reflective, choosing to exhibit God’s retribution rather than reflect his persistent, steadfast love."Yes, there are any number of sins and injustices in the world to be righteously angry about. Stetzer’s not denying this. But in the Bible, righteous anger is the prelude to repentance, reform and redemption. It is a means to a greater end. In our culture, outrage is its own reward.The connection between righteous anger and redemption reminds us that God’s mission to redeem humanity is the purpose for which Christ came into the world. “For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10). When we let our anger get kicked up to 11, we forget that we are Christ’s ambassadors, carrying the message: “Be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20). When we keep our mission in the forefront of our minds, however, a different strategy emerges.Part 3 outlines “ways that Christians can counteract the outrage in their lives and this world by being intentional about developing a Christ-centered worldview, living as God’s ambassadors, loving others in a winsome way, and engaging thoughtfully with others, both online and face-to-face.” I like the way Stetzer summarizes the strategy this way: “Instead of Outrage, Engage.”There’s so much wisdom in Stetzer’s recommendations that it’s hard to summarize them all. So, let me just highlight his “Principles of Digital Discipleship.” They are particularly helpful, especially given the outsized role that social media play in fomenting our culture of outrage. When online, Stetzer advises:1. Remember that everyone is watching.2. Choose investment over consumption.3. See people, not avatars.4. Make grace the default mode.5. Resist the urge to fight every battle.6. Value authority over freedom.Regarding that last point, Stetzer writes: “Just because we can say something doesn’t mean we should. There are ways of confronting abuses of power, and I am certainly not condoning a mindless obedience. But Christians need to understand that the best place for difficult conversations is usually not online.”The vicious cycle of outrage and counter-outrage has got to stop, for the good of our culture and for the sake of the gospel. Christians need to demonstrate a better way. After all, if the Church is “the hermeneutic of the gospel,” as Lesslie Newbigin put it, then our unrighteous outrage may lead people away from God, giving Him a bad reputation in the process. You can be outraged or you can fulfill the Great Commission. You can’t do both.In sum, I highly recommend both Christians in the Age of Outrage and its author. I'm not a fan of "required reading" assignments but I would list this book as required reading for all Christians. Especially in an age where the internet allows anonymity, people feel emboldened to rage at everyone else, and Christians do it too. But Christians don't seem to realize (or don't care) the damage they do to the Christian witness in this country when they behave this way. Ed Stetzer does an excellent job laying out what behaviors Christians are guilty of that are harmful to the Christian witness, and what behaviors we should be engaging in instead. No watering down of Scripture, no moral relativism.

Disclaimer: I love Ed Stetzer's books, teachings and social media presence.How you go into a book is often an indication of whether you'll get anything out of it. I went into Christians in the Age of Outrage hopeful, ready to learn and be challenged. I was. Stetzer lays out the problems we're facing in the world today using statistics and stories to illustrate along the way. He encourages Christians to be winsome, and that is what he is in this book. Despite the content, it was an enjoyable read.I could have said all of that before I got to the most beneficial parts of the book. At least for me. I went in aware of a lot of the problems he was addressing. I've been distressed watching the ways Christians have responded to media, politics and differing beliefs. And I didn't just want confirmation that I was right. That's not really helpful. What I really wanted was an answer to the problem. How can I, as a Christian and pastor, do better and help others to do better?This led to my favorite part of the book, which was the third part, "The Outrageous Alternatives to Outrage." This section was extremely helpful, as Stetzer, not content with proving that there's a problem, lays out a plan for moving forward. How can we, as Christians, be part of our society's conversations in a way that points them to Jesus? His answers were both spiritual and practical. I'm thankful for this book, and would heartily recommend it to any Christian.

The book is very helpful in many ways. I love how Ed uses research to prove so many of his points that Christians - who should be filled with mercy - are actually among the most outraged people in the west. It is brilliantly written with terrific stories and anecdotes mixed in in appropriate places. My criicism of the book is that the close really fell flat to me it was like he said “you have all this outrage, but now go out and be a committed Christian that lives for Jesus.” If those most in need of the correction could do that they’d already be doing it. I expected a lot more substance and insight behind the “cure” than Ed provides.

If you are a follower of Jesus; this should be required reading before interacting with the world outside your home. Dr. Stetzer does an excellent job of pointing out truths and encouraging readers in how to walk in them through the outrage.

I'm what some would classify as an ex-evangelical. I left my Baptist church in 2012 and now classify myself as a Lutheran. While I don't agree with Ed's views on certain theological issues, I still find him an insightful voice to follow. This book illustrates why.Ed reminds us of some basic manners we all seem to have forgotten. Listen to others politely. When disagreeing, do so respectfully. Not everyone will share your worldview, and those who don't aren't your enemy. Not behaving in this way damages our testimony and closes people's minds to our words.

I’m a huge fan of analog cameras and instant film. I still take instant photos to this day. Unlike other reviewers, I’m not bothered by the wide borders of white on each of these cards; I “get” what the publishers were trying to achieve here by preserving that factor. However, I have oodles of Polaroids snaps from my youth—I’m writing this review under a framed 29 year old Polaroid of me holding a childhood cat—and while old instant film isn’t known for sharpness, the color on all these old Polaroids I stil have has remained quite beautifully vibrant. So the fact that virtually every single one of these postcards is so incredibly washed out is rather insulting to the medium I love. If decades of wear hasn’t washed out the color on my snaps, why did the Impossible Project decide to only include ethereal, muted shots? Fuzzy is one thing, bland and joyless is another. This set is missing a simple component of instant photography: fun!And as mentioned, these are quite undersized so good luck to Postcrossers, like me, who must write itty bitty to fit a brief message. This is a big miss on a medium I love: fails to convert new fans to instant photography, fails to function as particularly postal-friendly cards, fails to achieve any balance as a curated project. When the card stock is the only compliment I can conjure, this is hardly a set to recommend.

Okay. When it comes to reviewing postcards, a lot has to do with personal taste. That being said, I found that the title of these cards was fairly self-explanatory. The Spectrum Collection. Every card has a Polaroid-esque photo and runs through the colors end to end. Starting off with a rainbow pic, ending in black and whites. While I appreciate the artistic integrity of these cards, they are just simply not my cup of tea. I would have much preferred for the whole image to cover the front of the card rather than just partially. Also, they are not as big as regular postcards, by a half inch or so. Yet, there are pros. The cardstock is of good quality, there are duplicates (2 each of 50 cards), and the while the images are smaller, they're still pretty.

A fine collection of postcards, and I've used several out of the set for my Postcrossing mailings. I may end up purchasing a second set when these run out. The printing on the front and back of the cards is very well done, and the paper stock is very thick and makes for a sturdy postcard.

These little postcards are very sturdy. I used them to write to my Senators. Since there were two of every design I took some to my classroom to use as name cards as well. The students loved them. These are very artsy, indie-looking postcards! They have a wide array of pictures - from animals to flowers and everything in between! I like these a lot!

Images are good but the size is quite a bit smaller (5x3 3/4) than standard postcard so was disappointed in that.

I have bought many (!!) boxes of postacrds (sets) from Amazon, and this is one of the nicest. The photos./images are just gorgeous, and nicely varied. Highly recommended!

You know, in the spot in the middle that when you draw it yourself, you concentrate on to make sure it looks right, but then you look at the wedge where only two circles overlap and you're like "damn, I kinda screwed that one up" but you move on with your life because honestly, if you're gonna get on yourself about how you draw venn diagrams, you're not going to be able to get through the day.At its core, this book is funny. It's a travel book, and it will lead you to daydream about traveling the world. But it definitely spends more time discussing the people you meet while traveling the world, rather than, you know, the actual world. The world seems secondary when you're on a boat full of Australian partiers who realize, with a bit of horror, that there are a few more days left on their boat ride, and the entire boat is out of drugs.I enjoyed this book quite a bit and wish for more books in this genre.

This book is a very entertaining tale of the author's trip through Mexico, Central and South America, but beyond that, is just a delicious taste of the rich history of Latin America with a huge list of references to follow up with. For better or worse Steve just dictated my reading list for the next year. Thanks? This was the perfect book to read after a very long stressful summer. Steve takes you on his trip with the ease of simply telling you what his impressions are of visiting a place or meeting people for the first time. That is traveling and the essence of adventure. I was interested in Steves first impressions were of places I had visited when I was 18, back in 1970. I can say with all senserity that his accounts are accurate. I agree with him about making choices to see or not see various places... That is part of the journey. I will tell friends to read his book, but only the adventurous friends who will appreciate the journey.

Fantastically written, informative, and wildly funny. You will learn history, random facts, and get a great laugh along the way. I LOVED this book, highly recommended.

Really enjoyed this travel adventure read. The author provides excellent historical background to supplement his anecdotes. Through his excursions to both tourist destinations and the "off the beaten path" experiences, he hints that perhaps people and interactions with them are the best part of life (and that is where this book shines). If you like travel reads, buy this book - if for nothing more than the exhaustive list of other travel books he eludes to.

A great and easy read! Steve Hely balances giving some facts and taking the reader on his journey through South Anerica. The chapters are like short short stories so you can pick up the book without fear of having to back track to remind you where you left off. It's hilarious, fun and makes you want to be Steve's travel bud on his next adventure.

This book was a very good read. As I began, I felt as if my eyes were finally being opened. There was this whole world I had never known. The were so many ways to pick up and talk to women that I thought would never work, or never even thought of. I wanted to try them all out, but I felt as if I should finish reading before I set out on my endeavors. As I read page after page I became more and more interested. I was seeing some of my coworkers in a new light. They acted just like some of the people in this book, some of which I had looked up to. A little more than halfway through, I began to see what direction this book was going in. I am glad I read this book all the way through. I thought that it was women that I was missing in my life. I needed to become a pickup artist, or so I thought. While it is true that women are noticeably absent from my life, that wasn't the source of my emptiness. It was confidence. It wasn't until the end of book that I realized that I didn't need any fine tuned pickup lines. I needed to just be me, but with more confidence. This book has given me the basic tools I need to start conversations with random strangers, to meet new people, which I had been to afraid to do. So what if they don't like me, the right people for me will. All I need to do is get out there and socialize. While this book still makes me want to go out and try to pickup women, it's not to become a pickup artist. It's to further myself in every aspect of my life. Women are my vice in life, my weakness, I am afraid of rejection and thusly, afraid of women. If I can overcome my biggest obstacle with confidence, then there is nothing I can't do. Even though Neil Strauss will never know of me and never know how big of an impact his book has had on me, his book has unlocked the door to my future that I can now begin to open. "The Game" is a bit like a chameleon in regard to its purpose and how people will interpret it. It is going to be different things for different people. Others a eye opener/oh s*** moment book (particularly for woman who have been targeted with the techniques Strauss describes). And so on. Or maybe all of the above!"The Game" is told through stories/first hand accounts of Strausses experience in the seduction community. He manages to tie in the life/self help lessons in nicely with all the drama of a good story. There's rarely a dull moment but I do have to say that it can seem Strauss is bragging at times and this hurts the flow of the story at times.Personally the book acted as a gateway for me, as I imagine many others, into a much needed self improvement period of my life. I began to realize my self worth, gain confidence in myself and really go out their and make my dreams happen. To look inward for approval rather than bending overbackwards to gain the approval of others.And I think that's where their is a lot of misunderstanding in the public. The seduction community is more than a bunch of creepy pickup nerds trying to bed and use woman. Often men find their way to the community after years of frustration and loneliness stemming from failure with the opposite sex (something they were never taught how to deal with by school or their parents). Maybe they were abused and suffer from extremely low self esteem. Whatever the case guys like Strauss, Mystery (and others) have been there and have done the hard and tiring work of figuring out what the problem is and how to fix it. And now their sharing this knowledge to others to help them. So it's important to have an open mind and not disregard Strauss because of the subject matter he's discussing.I do feel the game leaves you wanting more (perhaps this is by design). I would recommend, actually would require, that you check out Strausses follow up "Rules of the Game". It's much more of a "how to" book and features the style life challenge which is a 30 life changing program. It's the book Strauss could wish he could give to his younger self. Very insightful book! "The Game" was very popular ten years ago & I witnessed many men attempt the strategies. It was so iconic that I referenced it in Part 2 of my mystery novel -- Firm Resolve.No doubt many women find this book misogynistic. However, perhaps reality is more disturbing. Equally troubling is the misapplication of the principles recommended. Too many guys don't actually read "The Game" & take tips out of context. For example, the negs are supposed to be light-hearted & witty -- not blatant insults.Incidentally, in addition to my own copy which I loaned to two girlfriends, I also bought one for a friend. She thought she was dating a jet-setting banker. However, I figured the guy was a con-artist. It caused a rift btw us because I didn't say what she wanted to hear. Luckily, after reading this book, she got over 'her prince,' and married a nice solid guy who works a less glamorous job, but is a good father and husband.So while this book is supposed to be a self-help for men, it's actually a much better book for women. But I'm sure if I read other reviews, I'll see that what I've written is redundant.

I am a retired physician. Fortunately I do not have chronic pain. However, I do have a dear friend who developed chronic pain after intensive chemotherapy. I have been trying to support her during her journey toward relief of her chronic pain. For that reason I reluctantly bought this rather expensive book.From my point of view, the book is a collection of three things: First, the book includes a number of one page "vignettes" about the neurophysiologic basis of chronic pain and the neuroplastic approach to chronic pain. These are a bit technical for the average layman, but I found them fascinating and helpful. However, I would have appreciated more references to original sources.Second, the book includes several pages of Neuroplastic Tips. I would characterize these as tasks or strategies that patients with chronic pain may find useful. The emphasis is on options to try. I doubt that any one patient will try all the strategies, but there appears to be something for almost everyone to try.Third, the book includes several page of quotations from "people taking control of their pain." Here individuals describe, in very personal terms, how they "talk" or "think" their way to pain relief. For the patient who is beginning to try a neuroplastic approach to pain relief , these short quotations provide a wonderful view of the range of approaches that other patients have discovered or developed to achieve pain relief.The book also provides useful guidance about using the neuroplastix.com website, which has some very helpful animated graphics.I am glad that I bought this book and read it.

I was disappointed with the content and format of this book. I wouldn't really call it a workbook. It is more a collection of statements regarding neuroscience, and one sentence suggestions. But there is really no training procedure. For $48 I had expected an excellent book. I have recommended The Chronic Pain Care Workbook (New Harbringer $20 Amazon) for my patients for many years and they have found it to be very helpful. Also, the The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook by New Harbringer has helped many patients as well.

I have had severe icepick neck pain for 17 years, with several triggers, including reading, sewing, lifting light weights, drawing, cleaning etc. This work book has shown me how to retrain my brain and remove triggered pain. I am having great success with the images and concepts outlined. I imagine a healthy brain, like I used to have before my injury, and tell myself that there is no longer an injury to protect. I do this over and over, often in combination with my CES machine, and the pain suddenly lifts. I am very, very grateful to Moskowitz and Golden for this workbook. I have my life back. Thank you.

I truly admire this guy for putting this out there and being vulnerable with it, and I hate to give it just 3 stars because he is sincere with his desire to help others. However, for the money I really didn't learn much other than specific pain locations in the brain which although interesting did not assist in my healing. Go to DNRS or Gupta for solutions and maybe use this for a few extra little ideas that may help with neuroplasticity. There are volumes of other info you can read for less $. One technique here actually hurt me for a while, as it recommended smells/scents like peppermint and I (unknowingly) had MCS (multiple chemical sensitivities) which is basically reactions to smells! So things got much worse for a while. Basically this is all about distraction ideas and lists things that helped other people heal, goofy things like "I picture minions putting the fires in my brain out" Use your own creativity with a program of choice and it will do the same thing.

I am using the therapy that they show how to use to control & get back the chronic pain that I am in. When a person would ask you where you would rate your pain between 1 & 10, mine is at least a 5 every day. This therapy program that they show you how to use in here is helping me to come down off of the narcotic pain killers that I was on & the amount (extremely high) I was taking.This is one therapy book that is not only useful for those with chronic pain. It is useful for everyone. It will help you to utilize your brain better, no matter if your brain is traumatically injured like mine is or if yours isn't harmed at all, this will help you.

Most important book for anyone with chronic pain! I tell everyone about this book. I went to a seminar for providers based on this curiculum, and I can't tell you how this book helps patients really wanting to take control of their pain, not just deal with it. I am hoping to get a book for every one of our patients with pain. I cannot recommend this enough. Life changing!

Brilliant book but far too expensive. I would recommend the content and accompanying website for anyone who has chronic pain, it is really helping me to rewire my brain away from pain and into pleasure. The explanations are generally clear and in language non practitioners can understand and the ideas for reducing chronic pain are extremely helpful. For someone who has been dealing with chronic pain for over 40 years, Neuroplastix has been a huge help when other methods such as medications and relaxation techniques have not helped much at all.

A fantastic training tool and inspiration if you are living with chronic pain. Check this book out if you or anyone you know is living with chronic pain.
