American Canopy: Trees, Forests, and the Making of a Nation, by Eric Rutkow

Review

“An original and often surprising take on American history.” —Wall Street Journal“There is much in this book on the prevalence of wood products in our life, but more on their deeper significance. This book is not merely a history, but an eloquent advocate of, as Rutkow writes, ‘how trees change from enemy, to friend, to potential savior.’” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch“A lively story of driven personalities, resources that were once thought to be endless, brilliant ideas, tragic mistakes and the evolution of the United States. Rutkow has cut through America’s use and love of trees to reveal the rings of our nation’s history and the people who have helped shape it.” —San Diego Union Tribune"An excellent book for both academics and general readers, this is highly recommended." -Library Journal"An even-handed and comprehensive history that could not be more relevant...The woods, Rutkow’s history reminds us again and again, are essential to our humanity." --Business Week "A deeply fascinating survey of American history through a particularly interesting angle: down through the boughs of our vanished trees." -Boston Globe“For those who see our history through the traditional categories of politics, economics, and culture, a delightful feast awaits. In this remarkably inventive book, Eric Rutkow looks at our national experience through the lens of our magnificent trees, showing their extraordinary importance in shaping how we lived, thrived, and expanded as a people. A beautifully written, devilishly original piece of work.” —David Oshinsky, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Polio: An American Story"Right from its quietly shocking prelude--the cavalier and surprisingly recent murder of the oldest living thing in North America--Eric Rutkow’s splendid saga shows, through a chain of stories and biographical sketches that are intimate, fresh, and often startling, how trees have shaped every aspect of our national life. Here is the tree as symbol and as tool, as companion and enemy, as a tonic for our spirits and the indispensable ingredient of our every enterprise from the colonization voyages to the transcontinental railroad to Levittown. The result, both fascinating and valuable, is a sort of shadow history of America. Toward the end of his finest novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald writes that the 'vanished trees, the trees that had made way for Gatsby’s house, had once pandered in whispers to the last and greatest of human dreams.' AMERICAN CANOPY retrieves those trees and does full-rigged (on tall, white pine masts) justice to the dream." --Richard Snow, author of A Measureless Peril and former Editor-in-Chief of American Heritage"AMERICAN CANOPY marks the debut of an uncommonly gifted young historian and writer. Ranging across four centuries of history, Eric Rutkow shows the manifold ways in which trees--and woodland--and wood--have shaped the contours of American life and culture. And because he has managed to build the story around gripping events and lively characters, the book entertains as much as it as informs. All in all, a remarkable performance!" --John Demos, Samuel Knight Professor of History at Yale University, and author of Entertaining Satan, winner of the Bancroft Prize in American History, and The Unredeemed Captive, which was a finalist for the National Book Award

You will not find it so riveting that you will stay up to the wee hours of the morning, but it is quite informative. I had never heard of the shelterbelt which was a Roosevelt plan to plan trees north to south in the dust bowl to attempt to eliminate the desert-like conditions. Who knew that General "Blackjack" Pershing had an insatiable desire for Sitka pines during WW I? People were amazed and unbelieving that a tree as large as the Sequoias could exist. As a Philadelphian, I was disappointed that there was no mention of Fairmount Park which is much larger than Central Park which receives a good writeup. I would have omitted the last chapter on the Environment, but Mr. Rutkow is foremost an environmentalist, secondly a historian, and thirdly a doctor of laws.

When you really stop and think about it, attempting to write a history of trees in a country as massive and geographically diverse as the United States is necessarily a gargantuan undertaking. Evidently, the idea of America's trees and forests as the subject of a broad historical study had simply never been attempted before. But I am here to tell you that first-time author Eric Rutkow pulls it off with great aplomb in his compelling and comprehensive new book "American Canopy: Trees, Forests, and The Making of a Nation." This one is just chock-a-block full of important people, places, events and issues and lays out for the reader a chronological history of the essential role that America's trees and forests have played in the history of our nation. I simply could not put this book down.In "American Canopy" you will discover that the British had designs on the land that would become America as early as 1584. Richard Hakluyt, a prominent British citizen and preeminent geographer proposed establishing permanent settlements whereby transplanted Englishmen would work the land. Hakluyt well understood the treasure trove of natural resources that seemed to be there for the taking. Timber was badly needed to maintain and expand the British naval fleet. Eventually colonies were established and by 1629 a shipbuilding industry was beginning to emerge in New England. But this was just the beginning of the story....As I indicated earlier "American Canopy" chronicles the important people, places, events and issues in the history of America's forests. Eric Rutkow offers up engaging stories involving several American presidents including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and his distant cousin Franklin Roosevelt. You will learn about the explorers Lewis and Clark and discover the roles played by a distinguished group of other prominent Americans including Thomas Edison, Frederick Law Olmstead, Daniel Boone, Frederick Weyerhauser, Benjamin Franklin, Henry Ford, John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed), Henry David Thoreau, Gifford Pinchot, James Fenimore Cooper and William Levitt to name but a few. Furthermore, you will discover that when our nation was first settled the forest cover was estimated to be some one billion acres and how over a period of just 300 years that figure would dwindle to just 600 million acres. Rutkow talks extensively about the negative effects clear-cutting, insects, fire and disease have had on our forests over the centuries. This is not a pretty picture but you may actually be encouraged by the way America has chosen to fight back in recent decades. You will also discover the role the federal government has played in the development and protection of our forests and wilderness areas over the years. Rutkow cites the creation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872 and John Muir's remarkable effort to establish Yosemite National Park as particularly significant milestones. I was also pleased to read about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) that was established by President Franklin Roosevelt back in 1933. As a result of that program a young man from Providence, Rhode Island, who would eventually become my dad, was able to spend a couple of years working in the wilds of Wyoming planting trees, carving out trails, erecting firetowers and building fire protection roads among other things. This proved to be a very rewarding experience for so many young men during that difficult economic time. Meanwhile, Rutkow also documents the origins and evolution of both the "conservation" and "environmentalist" movements in this nation. Merely "protecting the nation's forests" would morph into "conservation" a philosophy that proclaimed that "all natural resources ought to be managed with an eye toward sustainability and efficient use." Then in 1960 with the passage of MUSYA (Multiple-Use Sustained Yield Act) the federal government would declare that "It is the policy of the Congress that the national forests are established and shall be administered for outdoor recreation, range, timber, watershed, wildlife and fish purposes". Note the amazing change in emphasis here. Our nation's forests were no longer merely a resource to be exploited for profit. Very interesting indeed! So whether you are a history buff or just someone who is endlessly curious about the world around you "American Canopy: Trees, Forests, and the Making of a Nation" should be right up your alley. This is a thoughtful, meticulously researched and well-written book. I must tell you that this is easily the best book I have read thus far in 2012. It is such a fascinating topic. In my view "American Canopy" is an extremely important work and I suspect that Eric Rutkow is someone we will be hearing a lot more from in the future. He proves to be a very gifted writer! This is a book that is definitely worth your time and attention. Very highly recommended!

Tracing the importance of trees in American history, Eric Rutkow is understandably forced to be selective in what he dwells on in American Canopy. Despite glossing over some areas I would not have, he still has put together a very engaging and clearly well researched series of tales showing how Americans have finally come to understand the profundity of trees through centuries of reliance, abuse and increasingly responsible management.Highlights of American Canopy for me tend to center around the earlier history of the American colonies and the nascent US. From the use of Maine's white pines for shipmasts and early (futile) attempts to restrict the best trees for use by the Royal Navy, to the symbolic importance of liberty trees in town squares throughout states.Much focus is placed on the absolutely vast stock of timber settlers found waiting for them and the profligacy it engendered. Seemingly unending supplies of wood rendered needless any degree of resource management by America's earliest European colonists, and the author charts the long course of that philosophy, and its consequences, into the modern day.Though broadly a chronological history of the country and its use of trees, Rutkow takes time out to focus on various themes, including expansion of logging from the northeast to the lake states, the deep south and the pacific northwest. He also details the fall of two iconic American trees - the chestnut and the elm - all but wiped out by disease.Familiar names include Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of Central Park; John Muir and Gifford Pinchot, two of America's founding conservationists; and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, whose Civilian Conservation Corps brought forest tourism to the American people and whose deep love of trees many who know him mainly in the context of World War 2 will find fascinating. The final section of American Canopy expands to include the environmental movement of the latter 20th century as a whole. I didn't mind this but it did seem to me to roam somewhat from the core topic. My only real criticism of American Canopy as a whole relates back to one of my first points - in what Rutkow chooses to omit. I was expecting Theodore Roosevelt to feature much more heavily in this book, and the work done to secure so much land for conservation purposes through the National Parks system around the turn of the century. Perhaps the author felt it has been dealt with elsewhere but to me it seemed an oversight. It also seemed to me that the role of trees and timber in the Civil War was given short-thrift. While it's possible there simply weren't many good stories to tell about this period as they would relate to trees, I probably would have tried to include something.

This book is just another masterpiece from Fabien Sanglard, and a great continuation of the exploration of classic games he started with the Wolfenstein 3D book. It makes you appreciate the ingenuity of Id Software, when they had to work with limited resources, no multithreading/multitasking, limited color palette, and a fragmented landscape of audio devices. You'll also appreciate the level of details that went into the game design. The section about various ports to a range of hardware, and the time frames it was done, is astonishing. The description of hardware capabilities, audio/video interfaces, and design decisions behind them is quite interesting, and takes you to the nostalgic mood of good times when innovations ran wild. The most impressive message I carried out of the book is how the Id engineers cherished the concept of time. One example of that is that DOOM.EXE came with a special way to load WAD files when the file name was prepended with a tilde. That would save the game designer ~30 seconds of game initializing so he would see the results immediately. The theme of valuing time is carried throughout the book, and it's possibly that way of thinking that contributed greatly to the success of Id. The concept many modern software engineers could learn a great deal from.

I played Doom prior to its release, when a pirated copy containing the first three maps found its way to me. My jaw immediately dropped to the floor. As a software developer I was astounded that proper perspective texture mapping could be achieved in real time on then-current hardware (I had an i486DX2-66). I'm still amazed at John Carmack's accomplishment today. At the time I set about determining whether I could develop texture mapping code with anywhere near the performance. I failed miserably. I was able to produce working code, but it was sloooow. Any my code did nothing but rendering, and had none of the features required for an actual game (audio, AI, collision detection, networking, etc.). I've been a huge John Carmack fan ever since. He's one of my software development heroes, a truly rare talent. The author of this book does an excellent job of describing not only the details of how the code works, but also some interesting history and trivia. The book describes the hardware of the time in some detail, and serves as a good companion to "Game Engine Black Book: Wolfenstein 3D", which provides further details in some areas. Highly recommended for anyone interested in what the game development landscape looked like in the early '90s.

I got my first computer in '86 (Apple IIgs), graduated HS in '93 and have spent my entire life employed as a software developer. I remember playing the shareware Commander Keens came out and the releases of Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. As we know this was before the Big Bang Theory and before geeks/programmers were considered somewhat cool. I ended up going to college to write game engines and studied BSP trees and a number of topics covered in this book. My Jr year of college the source to Doom was released and we could dive in. It was glorious.Thank you for this book and the detail on the history and the technology. It brought back a ton of memories of having lived through those days, trying to solve those same problems, and idolizing the guys were were just a few years older than me who were changing the world.I'm writing this review from a developers conference in Jan 2019 with 1000+ software developers. I have my copy of this book with me and we've been passing it around during lunches and happy hours and many are sharing stories of when we first saw/played Doom. A number of attendees have ordered their own copy since seeing mine. In the main exhibit hall of the conference is a small museum to old technology. In the middle of the exhibit is an older laptop running (fittingly) Doom...

Reading this book was a blast. A great trip down memory lane for those of us who were building and programming computers in the 1990s.Context: I am a software engineer, with lots of experience in C / C++ / assembly language / graphics, and the kind of low-level hardware programming described in this book. I was also in high school when DOOM shipped, and my friends and I played it to death. If you're not a programmer the book is still interesting - it explains lots of neat tricks, plenty of photos, trivia and quotes, and fills in some backstory about how the game was developed.Of course, you should also read Masters of Doom for the full story of iD.I really hope Fabien writes a similar book on i586 / Quake!

First off I'm fairly new to web programming (Javascript and PHP) but I didn't find much to broaden my knowledge with this book. Ajax Javascript is covered extremely well elsewhere ("Pragmatic Ajax", "Ajax in Action" and "Ajax Design Patterns" for instance) and is PHP programming ("PHP and MySQL Web Development" and "Advanced PHP Programming").The book is not complete enough to serve as an introduction to Javascript or PHP. It really doesn't seem to cover the issues with distributed asynchronous programming either. There is a huge need for a book that concentrates on building solid asynchronous servers with PHP. For instance how can state be carried from server call to server call (PHP session management?). What happens if multiple XML requests are sent while a PHP script is running? Can a single instance handle multiple requests without restarting from the beginning? How can a long running PHP program (yes you need to change the server time out) handle streams of data to and from Javascript? My suggestions for the next edition are:1) More on server side patterns (PHP) for AJAX2) Session management3) remote RPC techniques4) JSON servers (techniques like phpolait?)5) Talk through the code examples more.I found the code in the book to be the hardest to read through and at the same time the most boring of any programming book I've ever read.

This book teaches by example. The first few chapters introduce AJAX and what part PHP, Javascript and XML all play. Then the remainder of the book takes you through several example applications. The example apps are simple enough that you can easily follow. These applications include Form Validation, Chat, Suggest and Autocomplete, Charting with SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), using grids, and Drag and Drop. Each example begins by showing you the source code and how to actually implemented/deploy that application. There is also a supporting appendix for additional information about deploying the examples on a web server. Then each chapter follows by by explaining how the example worked. If you would like to quickly begin using AJAX from PHP this book is a great start.

This is my second AJAX/PHP book and I must say this one is excellent. The author gives the reader not only great examples, but then reexamines the code to let the reader how and why each block is needed and what purpose it serves. This is my first read from the publisher, Packt, but if the other books are laid out like this I'll give them a go.So should you buy it? I would say you definitely need a basic understanding of PHP and an Intermediate understanding of JavaScript to get through this book with a smile.Highly recommended.

A technical book is only useful if it appropriate for your current skills and knowledge. I am a system admin who has written a fair amount of C++ code and lots of Perl and other scripts. I now need to develop a simple web app from scratch, and this book was perfect for me. While I have many issues with the PHP language, the popularity of LAMP solutions makes PHP a necessary evil that will be around for some time. This book is a great intro to AJAX as well as PHP, XML, CSS and the DOM. The book is laid out and progresses very well, assuming virtually no knowledge in the first three chapters and with many sidebar comments that answer anticipated questions. The code examples are explained well and give you some good, functional examples to play with and learn from. They also do well by giving brief intros to important concepts such as DOM and CSS, but then provide links to good on-line resources rather than getting bogged down in these details. Why reinvent the wheel? If you start getting lost following the code that introduces one of these new concepts, just stop reading and peruse the sites they reference. If you truly new to these concepts, I would recommend reading the first 3 chapters closely and not at your computer, except to refer to the websites they mention. Then go back and re-read them while creating and playing with the code they provide. This helped me a great deal.

This book is very well written but you will find it exquisitely frustrating if you are unfamiliar with XML. I am an embedded systems programmer new to web technology but I am pretty familiar with PHP and Javascript. The lack of XML knowledge made this book a total waste of time for me. It is amazing and stupefying why the author would arrogantly presume that his readers would know XML when he is already presuming that they will know HTML. The net effect of this is, for almost EVERY example in the book he uses some XML so if you do not know XML then you will not understand what is going on. My search for a simple and elementary book that basically teaches you how to weave PHP+HTML+AJAX goes on. This is a disease that Application programmers have. They are used to dealing with everything in an abstract manner ALL the time so they totally forget at what level of clarity their readership is. This is one of the reasons that Bruce Eckel's 'Thinking in C++' and 'Thinking in Java' became best sellers. He was able to bring clarity to the object oriented paradigm in a simple manner because he started from scratch. Any author who claims his book is about helping you design web aplications and in the first 5 pages assumes you know XML deserves very little respect if you ask me.

This book highlights several different ways of using PHP and AJAX. It's short, but includes examples of form validation, instant messenger, and the all important sortable table. All-in-all, a good book, but if you're needing something more in-depth or more advanced, a longer (more pricey) book may be a better option.

It was easy to follow the first few chapters then they expect you to already know several other subjects before you can even understand the rest. I used [...] tutorials to get through the stuff that wasn't covered. Even after that it really didn't dig deep enough into fancy effects associated with AJAX.

#113,645 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Perhaps only a Tolkien fanatic would appreciate these books about his early drafts for Lord of the Rings. The fascinating thing for readers is how much this story evolved as Tolkien wrote it. Some events were foreseen early on while others were late developments. Tolkien tried out some ideas, then rejected or changed them. Others gradually took form as he wrote. It’s fascinating to read Christopher’s Tolkien’s notes about the state of these early papers, where his father would write up an outline, some points with a question mark, then comment on those points in the margins with “yes” or “no, better to have. . .” At one point, Christopher makes the comment about his father realizing that what he’d written wasn’t what “really happened,” suggesting that after a time, this story took on its own life and needed only for Tolkien to channel its message. The title of this volume is misleading. The book does not focus on Saruman and Orthanc, but on the continued development of the story. The first 190 pages cover the same material as the previous book, “The Return of the Shadow,” with new revisions. From the tomb of Balin, the story continues through the breaking of the fellowship to the first glimpses of Frodo and Sam in Mordor and King Theoden in Edoras. We see that Tolkien foresaw Frodo’s poisoning by the spiders, capture by orcs, and rescue from the tower by Sam. Other plotlines weren’t so clear. Legolas and Gimli originally turned for home and encountered the resurrected Gandalf. Boromir survived to return to Minas Tirith. Aragorn was to marry Eowyn, the character of Arwen not yet having appeared in the narrative. Theoden was simply an old man dubious of Gandalf, without a treacherous Wormtongue brainwashing him according to Saruman’s directions. Originally, it was Gimli who received a green gem from Galadriel and adopted the name of Elfstone. Galadriel herself took shape gradually after Lothlorien was introducedNames presented a great challenge for Tolkien. We saw in “The Return of the Shadow” that he couldn’t settle on names for the hobbits, even when their characters were established. In this book, it’s Aragorn he had difficulty with. Elfstone and Ingold were other considerations. Even when he finally made up his mind, we know he wasn’t done because he still used the epithet “Trotter.”Some chapters are intriguing or boring depending on your area of interest. We read the several lengthy precursors to the Lay of Earendil that Bilbo in Rivendell. A chapter is devoted to the evolution of maps of Middle Earth, and the appendix explores the development of runic writing. One passage I found particularly interesting concerns Celeborn and Galadriel. We know from “Return of the King” that he did not accompany her on the ship to Valinor, and his parting words to Aragorn suggested that this could be a permanent separation “may your fate be different from mine and you keep your treasure.” In one of the outlines, Tolkien writes that Celeborn desired to stay in the world, reinforcing this possibility.Reading through these books gives one a new appreciation for the process of novel-writing. While some authors may have their stories already well-mapped out beforehand, others may go through a period of evolution involving alternate plot lines and events. For those who are interested in the roads not taken, “The Treason of Isengard” offers a tantalizing glimpse into what might have been.

I am a writer and looking into the writing craft of master like JRR Tolkien is an invaluable experience. The work is meticulously researched by Tolkien's son--who also did many of the illustrations used in the various editions. You couldn't get a more conscientious and knowledgeable guide, a guide who had full access to all of Tolkien's notes. It's a real pleasure, at least for a writer/geek, to read several versions of the various chapters and see how the final vision came into being. Did you know that Aragon was in fact slated to be a wooden-shoe wearing hobbit named Trotter? Did you know the original story was going to be about Bilbo going to see another dragon (Smaug's magic put a desire in him to find another dragon)? The series is full of interesting revelations. However, don't start with this book. Begin your studies with the Return of the Shadow and read all four volumes. You'll be glad you did.

For someone who got bogged down in the first volume of the History of the Lord of the Rings, The Treason of Isengard was a far easier read. While you do end up back in Hobbiton once again, this volume mostly explores the fourth phase of Tolkien's writing of the Lord of the Rings. It ends with "The King of the Golden Hall" and contains an appendix about Dwarven runes, which is quite interesting.

I grew up with Tolkien and was a huge fan before the Jackson films ever hit the silver screen. If you want to have a more in-depth understanding of Middle Earth and its histories this is one of the books you need to read. If you wanted to know why a great wizard would choose a path that could only lead to death, sorrow and destruction this is the book which holds the answers.

So this and another book were a gift to my brother. He said he'd been putting off buying them for a few months so he'd have somethings to tell people what he wanted for Christmas. When he opened them, he looked like a little kid again (he was 31 at the time, so that made me feel good).

fills a void for more Tolkien material, Tolkien revised his text ie writings many times, very enjoyable goes with LETTERS of Tolkien goes with History of Middle Earth goes with tom Bombadill goes with art work of the Hobbit,

Great book

This book is at times tedious and repetitive but it is necessary when going into the details of the writing of a great work of literature. An valuable source of insight into the writing of the Lord of the Rings
