A specialist in the arts of the book from 16th- and 17th-century Iran, Farhad has curated numerous exhibitions on the arts of the Islamic world and coauthored Slaves of the Shah: New Elites in Safavid Iran (2004) and Falnama: The Book of Omens (2009). The waves came from the collision of two black holes, an event of woefully cataclysmic magnitude, releasing energy billions of trillions of times that produced by the sun.And yet astonishingly, the collision registered here on earth in the form of a tremor so slight as to defy imagination, a tremor displacing a giant mirror located in desert scrubland by no more than a thousandth of the width of a proton. In this book author and physicist Janna Levin tells us the story of the history of that event, the machinery that went into its almost imperceptible detection and most importantly, the human beings who made this discovery possible.The book shines mainly in two aspects. Firstly, being a physicist herself Levin brings an authoritative touch to explaining the science behind gravitational wave detection. Both the history of the field as well as its present incarnations get due credit. The writing can also sometimes get a bit stilted.What makes the book unique in my opinion instead – and different from many other popular physics volumes - is the second aspect which gives us an excellent insider’s look at the human aspects of science. This part of the book should dispel any illusions about science being an impersonal, objective, linear and logical endeavor. Instead we meet scientists who are subject to bouts of jealousy, who accuse each other of foot-dragging and egotism, who claim that it was they rather than their colleagues who made a particular discovery or built a particular piece of equipment. And we encounter the haphazard process of scientific discovery itself, full of fits and starts, blind alleys and uncertainty, held hostage to the vagaries of government funding and public relations.Levin especially has unique access to the three main scientists - Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Ron Drever - who conceived LIGO, fought for funds and personnel, worked out the theory and experimental techniques and have really stayed with the project for their entire careers. They believed in it long before anyone did, and did not let setbacks of funding and skepticism from other scientists blunt their vision. Levin has extensively interviewed these scientists and the narrative is liberally interspersed with their own quotes and their backgrounds. The quotes are often inspiring and show scientific inquiry at its dogged best, but it also shows us how scientists are human beings; how they can occasionally be petty, impatient and insecure. Sometimes individual scientific styles merge and thrive, and sometimes they can clash and dissipate rather than channel energy. What is admirable however is that one way or another these scientists and others overcome their insecurities, worked together, fought in front of Congress to get hundreds of millions of dollars allocated to their project and saw their vision to completion. What we need to keep in mind are not their shortcomings but their success in spite of these shortcomings.There is also a valuable lesson in the book in the form of the unfortunate story of a physicist named Joe Weber who claimed to have observed gravitational waves using a simple experiment involving aluminum bars way back in the 1960s. Other scientists could not replicate his results and he had to endure much censure and ridicule, but he stuck to his guns and kept on pushing for thirty years until the very end of his life. Although Weber was probably wrong in his science, his espousal of gravitational waves turned many heads and convinced other scientists to work in the field long before it was fashionable. His example shows us that sometimes even wrong science can lead others in the right direction.Levin’s book is thus an admirable showcase of the human side of science, and it's as much journalism as science. It really shows us how science is really done rather than how it’s portrayed in textbooks and popular sources. And it ultimately convinces us that scientists are inspiring role models, not in spite of their flaws but because of them.

This is an inside story about the long, long road to "proving" gravitational waves happen. You would think this might be a story of great joy and excitement. Rather, it's a sad saga of a number of key individuals who seized on an idea independently and together, then carried it forward at great personal cost till THEY WERE PROVED RIGHT! We mortals cannot quite grasp why this is so, but if you read the book you will come to believe in this kind of science and develop a strong sense of gratitude for everyone who stuck to their guns for decades. When I first got news of their success in hearing small sounds from big events in unimaginably distant space and time - I thought, this is a world changer! And I still think so. For one thing, the elasticity of space and time seems much more understandable and "of course!" now that I've read this story. Real people giving their lives to this kind of (literally) far-out thinking and then figuring out how to make it all real for all of us - they deserve our appreciation. And I thank Janna Levin for telling the story. A chronology and list of key players would help the lay reader, perhaps.

A well-written and informative description of the long struggle to build the two large laser interferometers that recently detected (twice!) the gravitational radiation emitted by the collision of two black holes. The book was actually written before the first of those detections, but, in a stroke of luck for all concerned, soon enough to enable an epilog describing it. Throughout, the author maintains a healthy balance between the geeky details (which she explains clearly enough for the non-geek to fully grasp) and the personalities, and clash of personalities, of the main participants. In contrast to most popular science books, this one devotes substantial space to a recounting of the budgetary ups and downs that beset any large project of this kind, with no guarantee of a successful completion. I probably had the wrong expectations when I ordered this book. I was looking for a popular treatment of the science of black holes and gravity waves. It discusses their personalities, foibles, and conflicts at great and sometimes repetitive and tedious length. Good afternoon everyone today I am reviewing book four in the billionaire romance series what a girl loves.So far in the series we have Sara and Robert two collage kids falling in love. I hope you read book one and book two and book three. it is definitely must to understand what is going on here in book four. This series is written in two points of views one being Sara and the other being Robert. It switches every other chapter. In book one Sara is at school to prove to her father that she can. She meets Robert in class. Robert is typical rich kid partying all night and doesn't care about school. In book one they are paired together for school project. Sara is not happy to be paired with guy who missed 6 weeks of classes. In book one while working together they get feelings for each other which is admitted at the end. Robert gets call that his dad is very ill then book ends. Now in book 2 we introduce James Robert's friend who has small crush on Sara. In book 2 starts with Sara not seeing Rob for few weeks but she's been spending a lot of time with James. She has no idea that James likes her. Rob invites Sara to go meet his dad who is dying. Robs dad makes him do this. Sara invites James to come along as she is nervous. When Sara meets Rob's dad he tells her firmly that he does not want Sara with his son. Sara is upsets and leaves back to school with James. Back at her dorm James tells Sara that he likes her and ask her out. Rob shows up and apologize to Sara but Sara is confused said she needs time. Book three what a girl knows starts off with Sara trying to decide who to choose. In this part of thier journey sara is unsure of what to do. She finally decides to call james after a week of ignoring both james and rob. This call ends with a date that she is unsure of. Mean while rob goes over to james dorm to talk with him and over hears the phone call. On sara and James date Robert shows up and it goes bad. Sara and Robert realize again they want each other. They end up together again and Robert takes sara to his private island. They just arrived and Robert gets a phone call from his sister. His dad has died but not before telling the girls how he felt for sara. So rob asks sara to join him in going to funeral.Now book four what a girl loves sara is heading with Robert to the funeral where she will meet Roberts 3 sisters. Theres more drama in what a girl loves then romance. Sara meets his sisters for first time day before funeral. So you know that has some issues. This is a good series but they should of made it into one book instead of several short stories.Note: I have received this product for a free or reduced price in exchange for my honest in biased review.

This is the fourth out of six books in this series. This is another short book (why they did not put them all in one is beyond me) and does not take long to read. The writing is getting better with each installment of this series. Again, the writing will draw you in and keep you hooked. There are a few spots that drag, but not enough for me to put it down. This book shows what a strong woman the main character is able to be, where in the past books it was not so obvious. I cannot wait to read the next book.Recommend this to a friend? Took me a little long than I anticipated to write this review but as a single mom of two it took me longer to read this book than I anticipated. Lol! I will say that I am absolutely addicted to this series! I don't want to ruin any of the plot to this book so I will keep my review pretty generic because as an avid reader myself I HATE spoilers, but I will say that this is a very well written series with perfect plot progression, it's a easy read that flows well and the characters are very well established. It's for sure my favorite romantic novel series. Very "50 shades" like which for me is amazing! The writing is done so well that your mind "sees" the story as you read it! I recieved the entire series free on my kindle in exchange for my honest review, which for kindle download it's free anyhow, but just for the sake of complete honesty I wanted to disclose that. Lounging around the great house of Cliveden, engaging in random sexual couplings, the Profumo scandal had possible security risks - Keeler having slept with both Profumo and a Soviet naval attache - but at it's heart it was a fairly conventional sex scandal. The Jeremy Thorpe scandal was a lot juicier - the main characters were far more interesting and venality ran through the case - from action to the eventual trial.Jeremy Thorpe was a Liberal politician at a time when the party was quite small. I think at it's height, it had 14 members of Parliament. But it was useful in working with the other two, larger parties. Or understand how to help my daughter son in law, and our precious lilly learn to live with c f. Our lilly is now 6 Tims book has covered already so many situations my daughter has came up against.This book will help us all as her family and friends. This opens our minds to such a more postive look and how to keep lilly more postive to live her life to the fullest. From the day your told your world becomes consumed how long will we have them. Then you read this and you understand you dont focus on how long you will have them. Its how strong you can help your loved one be to challenge cystic fibrosis. I would ask anyone facing something any heath challenge to read this postive, informative, humorous book. You will be ready to take on this secret world. And i say secret because so few people understand or even know what cystic fibrosis is. This book helps you understand you can still be in charge of your life. And a postive to anyone you know dealing with c f . You will learn how not to let this disease Define you. I will finish up by saying thank you Tim for writing this book. I hope anyone that reads shares their experience in reading this. I promise will put down with a new fire in living life to the fullest.

As the mother of a CF child who almost made it to her ninth birthday, Tim’s story was overwhelming and emotional. On one hand, I had to read his story in stages because my throat was too clogged to think and my eyes too blurry. On the other hand, I almost felt guilty as I thought about all the angst, pain, suffering and mental struggles that my Chrissy did not have to live through like the sad times in between the pages of Tim’s life. I am thrilled with the idea that God has pushed Tim further along in his blessed life with Katie and little Felix. The struggle is real and Tim’s strong character is fabulous. I am so glad that Julie on We Love Memoirs suggested that I read this book. It was educational and illuminating and I applaud Tim’s courage and candor.

This book is a very insightful and honest introspective account of Tim's life as a cystic fibrosis (CF) patient. It start from his youth and then focuses quite a lot on his daily events as he nears his tremendous milestone of turning 40 years old. Tim does not hold back in his challenges and descriptions of his mechanisms of coping with CF. From the rigorous medical treatments, dealing with relationships, coping with a full-time job, his dedication to physical activity, and to dealing with the challenges of his CF comrades are some of the topics covered. If you don't know much about CF, it will enlighten you of the challenges faced by CF patients, even though they often appear fine on the outside. If you are aware of CF, this will give you hope and courage to keep pushing forward daily, and to have the appreciation of the subtle beauties in life that are often overlooked by most us. This is a terrific account and pushes the awareness of CF to another level. It should also give others that have CF in their lives at some level the hope to keep fighting on.

Tim Wotton grips you into a delightfully raw, unscripted look into his life with Cystic Fibrosis. He articulates the thoughts of every CF adult regarding healthy people and their nonsensical complaints about life. Wotton shows everyone that despite having a genetic, uncureable disease you can live a normal life with Cystic Fibrosis. A wonderful read and an inspirational book for all. This book will is a must for family members of a cf person because it truly conveys what a CF patient goes through on a daily basis. I really enjoyed this book on Kindle. Tim Wotton writes with wit and intelligence and provides an insight into CF which I'd previously known little about. Despite living with this terrible disease his entire life Tim proves that no matter how awful things may seem it's possible to live the most productive and fulfilling of lives. A fantastic book with lessons and wisdom that will have meaning for most.

Tim is my mate. Being able to say that is a privilege. Reading this book is an emotional roller coaster. It doesn't matter if you know Tim or not, you should read this book to get an insight into living with CF and hear the story of a wonderful person.

Tim Wotton in the run up to his fortieth birthday gives an honest and at times humorous account of what life is like living with Cystic Fibrosis. Tim is one of the oldest survivors of the disease and is an inspiration to all. We can all take something from this book that will educate and inspire us... whatever we do... Life is what we make it and Tim has certainly made it. Tim was told he would not make it to his seventeenth birthday, so with his fortieth birthday in sight he decides to write down his thoughts and the book takes us in diary form through his thirty-ninth year, through to the milestone birthday.I learnt so much from this book, not only about Cystic Fibrosis, but about courage and determination and that a positive outlook to life can make a huge difference. The book is great for raising Cystic Fibrosis awareness. All who have or know someone with the condition will get some helpful insights and useful information from reading this book. The book will also be helpful to anyone facing challenges in their own life. It is always much easier I find to talk and learn from people who are going through the experience than get bogged down by all the medical jargon. I thank Tim Wotton for opening my eyes and making me more aware to a medical condition, I knew very little about.

THere is not much to review, this book was an assigned reading in one of my classes. Its a bit expensive but its also a long reading so I guess the latter justifies the former. I haven't yet used all the features of the book such as attached CD/DVD. Although I hope this comprehensive reading on fundraising will establish the base knowledge for the future.

Bought this book new after reading reviews. It seems like it’s a textbook that will also be useful in the future.
