I took a two-semester course on Assembly Language Programming, Digital Logic, and Computer Architecture and this book was amazing. We covered the basics of digital logic (binary, octal, and hexadecimal arithmetic, 1s and 2s complement, Boolean algebra, combinational logic, etc.) the first semester so by the time we got to this book in the second semester, we skipped the first two chapters and most of the third and went straight into adders and flip-flops.The author discusses the organization of A Simple Computer (ASC), but given what little time we had, we were tasked with building a Very Simple Computer (VSC), a primitive 8-bit computer (5-bit memory, 3-bit opcode) capable of performing basic arithmetic. We read just the chapters on combinational circuits, synchronous sequential circuits, organization & programming, hardware design, and memory.The point is that we only used about half the material in the book and we were able to build an 8-bit computer from TTL chips. If you read the thing cover to cover, you'd be able to build a 16- or 32-bit machine no problem. It was a ton of fun and this book was an absolute lifesaver. Together, the book and course fundamentally changed the way I look at computers and I have a much better understanding of how they operate and what's inside them.

The author wrote the pre trilogy to give the backstory to the favorite character of the series. But it feels as if the series was designed for the character of Drizzt. In the final book of the trilogy there is a great deal of excitement, action, and humor. And of course there is a fair amount of tragedy the author enjoys getting his George RR Martin on.

"Sojourn" is the last book in the "Dark Elf Trilogy" and it details Drizzt's journey as he leaves the Underdark and ventures forth on the surface.I thought the plot was a bit clunky in that it felt like the author crammed two major stories into one book. The first story is how Drizzt attempts to befriend some humans and all the things that go into fighting some new creatures, defending his good nature, and learning to survive on the surface. The second story commences when he leaves the initial place where he found sanctuary and attempts to find a place to call home. In a way, it felt a little like Tolkein's final story where the ring is destroyed, but the book continues back to the Shire for a little adventure there.I enjoyed this book and the subtle religious undertones. Drizzt comes to realize that Lolth, the Spider Queen, is not the only deity in the world, and that by following his heart he was following after a deeper calling. It was also comforting to follow Drizzt's journey as he sought out true companions that would accept him for who he was and not just make decisions based on his race.

Sure I was sad to see the crazy magical mining pickaxe, hammer handed dude leave, but I guess there is only so much you can write about someone with no hands. I think.Initially, Drizzt gets himself into some shenanigans by getting framed for slaughtering a bunch of kids. While it was quickly determined he was not the murderer, some jackass kept on trying to kill him because he lost his ear. He lost his ear when a tree fell on him. Shouldn't this guy go buck-wild on the tree instead? I think that would take less effort than tracking him for so long.Drizzt then takes out the real murders, who apparently need to eat people, I guess to gain XP in order to go back to its alternate universe. I related to this on a personal level.Between these events, some female ranger tries to track him down with an obviously metro-sexual dwarf and an elf I couldn't really care about. Their story ends when some rock-monsters started barraging them with boulders. Drizzt of course saved them, but then those characters became non-existant in the continuing plot. Where did they go? Who were they? Should I really care? Probably not.Then Drizzt meets up a crazy dude who is like Dr. Doolittle meets the Terminator. Except he's blind, which if you kinda think about it, makes him even cooler. The story turns into the Karate Kid for a while and Drizzt comes out being even more badass than in previous books.Other cool stuff happens. Conclusion: read it, dammit.

Just when you think you have the book figured out it will surprise you. Just when you think there is a pattern to Drizzt's misery you will be denied! This book is a self expression of belief that a virtue in itself is rewarding. There is a deep sense of right and wrong that every young reader should try and understand. I am 43 years old and am reading the book with my 2 year old sleeping next to me, yes I hope she reads the book as soon as she can. There is something sweet about this book. Something very satisfying; like I said a must read.

As usual a great story from R.A. Salvatore. The third book in the Legend of Drizzt series, it really demonstrates how much of an outcast Drizzt really is on the surface. Whereas the two previous ones, Homeland & Exile delved into drow culture and the air of mystery surrounding their city of Menzoberranzan, Sojourn shows the stark contrast between the world of the drow and that of the surface. Overall an incredible tale!

It has been a long time since I've read a book in less than 3 days, but this was a true page turner for me. In fact, I have read the first 3 novels in the past 10 days or so, and I haven't grown tired yet.I liked this story better than the second in the trilogy, and maybe a bit more than the first in some ways.I highly recommend the trilogy, and if like I you feel a bit apprehensive after finishing the second, grab this novel. It not only finished the trilogy on a strong note, it reinvigorated my interest in moving onto the 4th novel.

Awesome set collection of books. A family member gave them to me when I was younger. I thought they looked nerdy and it took me a few years to give it a go, but I am very glad I did. I read through my old copies so many times they fell apart, which is why I bought this copy. It's nice to have the trilogy in one book, even if it is the size of a cinder block.

There are few writers I enjoy more than Eugene Peterson. His love for God, for people, and for language routinely meet on the pages of his books. His work should be tasted and savored, but I find it difficult not to binge on his writings. Not surprisingly, Peterson exploring "the Art of Spiritual Direction" in The Contemplative Pastor (1989) was a book that I had a hard time setting down.The Contemplative Pastor is broken into three sections. In the first, "Redefinitions," Peterson explored three descriptors for a pastor: unbusy, subversive, and apocalyptic. I was recently moved by his description of the "unbusy pastor" in his later memoir The Pastor and had some familiarity with the idea of the apocalyptic pastor. Briefly, in Peterson's thoughts, pastors should be characterized by settledness, margin, and patience, working without frenzy in the day to day life of the church and of the world.The second section--the longest--is called "Between Sundays". Peterson meaningfully argues that much, if not most, of the work of the pastor takes place from Monday to Saturday. The nine chapters here are built around the beatitudes with an eye toward soul care. Each chapter begins with a poem and then moves into the realities of spiritual direction, exploring themes such as creation, prayer, language, small talk, and suffering.The final, albeit too brief, final section contains a number of poems about the incarnation. Peterson asked, "is it not significant that the biblical prophets and psalmists were all poets?" To answer his rhetorical question, yes, I believe it is significant. Words matter.Words convey truth, but they also convey beauty.Like his previous works The Contemplative Pastor by Peterson is a joy to read, whether or not you are a pastor.

What more can be said for Eugene Peterson? I read his books because of his economy of words. He doesn't use 10 paragraphs to say what can be said it 2. Rather, he'll do it in 1.Among his books, this is my go-to book that grounds me in my calling and prevents me from disillusionment. Love it and highly recommended.

The Contemplative Pastor - the first book I have read by Eugene Peterson - is a helpful study not in sermon preparation or church growth strategies or qualifications for eldership (the kind of stuff I usually read), but on the pastor's heart and the pastoral art.Peterson describes the term "pastor" with three unusual adjectives: un-busy, subversive, and apocalyptic (a chapter is devoted to each term), and then charts a course for shepherding people in the mundane.Peterson's poetry is sprinkled through the book, concluding with numerous poems at the end. Unfortunately, his poetry is not all that good. To me, it just seemed like the throwing together of pretty words without much rhyme or reason.But there are some jewels to be mined here - especially Peterson's job description for the un-busy pastor who devotes his time to prayer, bringing messages from God, and listening to his people, his meditation on "the middle voice" in relation to prayer, and his chapter "The Ministry of Small Talk."

It was an easy read, well laid out and multiple stories to help orient us to the idea's Peterson was throwing out. I did feel like some of the chapters repeated themselves and that he was just trying to fill up pagers to meet a quota. All in all a good book that I still reference today.

When I first started reading this book, I thought perhaps it was a waste of money. There was no meaty theological discussion, just basic, almost simplistic spirituality. Then it occurred to me that as pastors we tend to get so busy and so preoccupied with the "meaty" theological matters and the more "advanced" spiritual issues that we lose touch with the fundamentals. Here Peterson offers pastors a slower, change-of-pace that is refreshing and renewing.I especially appreciated his chapter entitled "The Ministry of Small Talk." There is a place in our busy lives as ministers to discuss more trivial things with other people. Through spending time conversing about smaller issues, we can make larger strides in relationships.This book is the first one I have read by Peterson. I don't plan for it to be the last. If you are a busy, burdened pastor, it will do you good to read this insightful work.

Good book for reflection of ministry. Whether young or old, Eugenes illustrations from personal examples cause the reader to pause and ask the comparative question "does this describe me?" For those in ministry I would surmise that the answer to most, maybe not all, of the answers to the repetitious question above is "yes, this does describe me!" Now that you've identified that struggle, how do you correct it? Welcome to this book!

This book deserves to be read by anyone who is striving to survive as a Christian and knows what it is like to battle the winds of cultural mores. It has rejuvenated my commitment to a dedicated live as well as called me to return to reading scripture on a daily basis. Too bad I had not read this way back when I was preaching. So glad to have read it now. Let it be known that being a Christian in this U.S. culture is meant to be an effort that needs to be carefully parsed.
