About 5 years ago, I started using Go both at work and on personal projects. Concurrently, I've been helping new and experienced developers learn Ruby (for many more years) at local meetups in my area. Many of those same programmers have been starting to get interested in Go, yet there have been only a few tutorial level books and guides out there. I've collected them all and when I heard about this book, I was very interested in helping to get it out to the public. I volunteered to do a technical proof reading of the book and over the course of reading it, knew I found a resource I could share with other students of Go.The book is structured in a well paced, incremental manner. The first few chapters cover syntax, the type system, and writing functions and methods. Go's built-in collection types (array, slice, and maps) are covered next. All of this gives you a solid foundation of the strongly typed, statically compiled language. For my fellow Rubyists that I've been teaching Go, this is a fairly big change.The later three units get into the parts of Go that really define what being a productive Gopher is all about. First is thinking in terms of composition and interface, which is a different pattern for those used to thinking OOP is only about classes and inheritance. Go's approach to error handling (no exceptions) and concept of nil is explored next. The book's final chapter introduces you to my favorite part of the language, its concurrent programming support. Goroutines and channels are explored and the unit's lessons start to give you a taste of what you can do with them.Each chapter provides sample code (also available online) for you to get right in and play with. Most of it works in the Go playground online, though I recommend installing Go on your Windows, Mac, or Linux machine and trying things there. There are larger projects at the end of each unit to really help you pull together the concepts.Overall, this is the book I now recommend to my fellow learners to start their Go journey. There are a number of other good books, videos, and other online materials that cover the intermediate and advanced levels of Go, and you'd be prepared for those after reading this book.

If I had to summarize Get Programming with Go, I would do so by saying that it accomplishes the incredibly challenging task of providing enough detail and background to be beginner friendly, while also avoiding so much detail and monotony that it is tedious and boring for an expert. Regardless of your background, this book is a great resource for learning Go.In addition to being approachable and well paced, the book is designed to be very hands-on. Not only are there tons of examples to read, code yourself, and learn from, but there are also many additional experiments and capstones to help practice what you are learning.Experiments tend to be small changes you need to make to examples in order to create similar, but different output. Their value lies in their ability to help solidify your understanding of the current lesson, as you have to figure out what specific lines of code need changed in order to produce the desired output. When I was first learning to program this type of tinkering is what really helped me start to understand new code, so I really appreciate the authors attention to this detail.Capstones are a little more complex than experiments; instead of taking a program that illustrates a specific lesson and altering it, these show up every few lessons and require you to apply all the knowledge you have gained up until that point. As a beginner these capstones may feel challenging at first, but by working through them you end up knowing with absolute confidence that you understood the material and are ready to move on to the next set of lessons.All in all I think this is a great book with a practical, hands-on approach to learning Go and I will be recommending it to others in the future.

The author has a great writing style. He points out features of go that were not highlighted in other books I have read. The author teaches you the lesson, has instructive examples and then experimental code projects to do to aid in your learning. I am really enjoying the book and I am pretty picky on how books are formatted, as well as, how the message gets presented. Overall great book, can't say enough about it. A definite go to if your getting started in Go or just want to pick up some things that nobody else mentioned.

This book was really awesome! I am a young, beginner jazz enthusiast so I started with the King of jazz and worked my way around. I made a great choice. Not only does Miles give a great account of his music, but also recollects other notable musicians in the process. Which makes it worth wild to study their music further too. I thought this book was going to read like a memoir, you know very tight and numerical and mostly personal, and I was wrong. But its in a good way Davis moves from person to person, place to place and it keeps readers (at least me) on their heels. The first thing I ever heard about Miles Davis (way before I discovered his music) was that he was mean, disrespectful, and cold. Miles confirms these personality traits but he also justifies them in an odd but believable way. He made me understand why he grew so cold and by the end of the book (the last few pages I'm on now) he makes me sympathize with him.I have read many reviews about the book and most are correct. He is bold in this book, holds no punches, tells no colorful stories (I still can't get the taxi cab story with Bird out of my head), and he remains upfront and personal throughout the read. Some say he is simply racist, contradictory, and hateful toward his musical peers, but those people fail to understand the story of black folk. The whole of this nation and the western world is one big contradiction and I think, indirectly, Davis displays this fact through his references to events and stuff in his life. And as for disrespecting other legends, he doesn't do this in a way that demonizes them. He gives Bird the worst time (second to maybe Coltrane or Monk) but at the same time he explains how he worshiped the jazz god. For the most part, everything Davis explains is true about the story of our people and our music and lifestyle. If you don't like it, you may find that you are apart of the problem, black or white. This book isn't a literacy masterpiece but I truly believe Davis put his feelings into this good read and that makes it a must read for music lovers.One final note about the read of the book: I like how Davis gives readers insight on how jazz slowly dies through progression of music and the emergence of Funk and "White Rock" and "Hillbilly music". He explains how the music (jazz) becomes white washed and another stolen item from the black experience. He also gives a great account of his own progression through the years of bebop, ballad, "cool", fusion, and free jazz forms. This book is cool, hip, and truthful.On the shape of the book: Seller described it as in good shape but a bit worn and it was. There was now notes or marks inside and that made me very happy. Came before it was scheduled to, but who complains about stuff like that? Not me!

Miles Davis brings in this book what he brings in his trumpet playing: a unique, totally fascinating voice. Read this passage: "After [Cannonball]'d been with us a while and then after Trane came back, the sound of the band just kept getting thicker and thicker, almost like when a woman uses too much makeup ... Trane would play some weird, great s***, and Cannonball would take it in the other direction, and I would put my sound right down the middle or float over it, or whatever ... And then Paul's anchoring all this creative tension between the horns, and Red's laying down his light, hip s***, and Philly Joe pushing everything with that hip s*** he was playing and then sending us all off again with the hip-de-dip, slick rim shots that were so bad, them 'Philly licks.' Man, that was too hip and bad" (222). Besides the music, Miles opens up about his failed marriages, heroin addiction, various encounters with the police, and a whole lot of other stuff as well. He has a lot of really weird beliefs: "I'm a number six in numerology, a perfect six, and six is the number of the Devil. I think I have a lot of the devil in me" (136). And with Spotify, you can find all the music he references very easily. I highly recommend this work.

This book is intense. You really feel that you get an insider's view of Miles' life, unedited and unabridged. There is a great deal of interesting stories about the best jazz musicians, but also rich stories of Miles' personal life that are very raw and unapologetic.The author, Quincy Troupe, does an amazing job conjuring Miles' voice and giving it life on the page. This is one of the best books about music history that you can possibly buy, and perhaps on of the best autobiographies as well. Superb!

Finally I got this booK!!!!I had been waiting for the book. Finally, it arrived and I could not put it down. However, this book is not for the faint hearted!!! The book has language, very raw, and personal descriptions of some very famous people that is explicit. Miles Davis was not only an outstanding musician, but a vivid observer of lives and living as well. The book is filled with interesting, powerful and intimate story, and solid information about Jazz and music. Sometimes, most times, the sharing, the tales, are redundant, verbose, the same story retold in several chapters.( The book could have used some good editing.) but that dose not take away from the interesting and informative reading.

I knew Miles Davis.I am also from the midwest. I appreciated the author's rendering of the story which smacked of deep truths about growing up and living in the midwestern part of the country, in an America deeply steeped in White racism...and the bridge to New York as Miles stretched out musically to become a Master in his legacy of influence in the music and music industry. Miles Davis is dead...long live Miles Davis.

I should preface this review by stating that I own every Charlotte Mason book on the market today, including her original six volumes. Aside from her own words in those writings, I consider this the most helpful book I own when it comes to actually implementing her methods. Honestly, I hesitated to buy this book for quite a while because the editorial review wasn't especially glowing and there weren't many reader reviews describing its incredible attributes. At any rate, I figured I should keep my collection complete, so I bought it to see what it had to offer. I am extremely pleasantly surprised by its content.The beauty of this book is that it was collectively written by educators who are involved with modern Charlotte Mason schools. Unbeknownst to many of the homeschooling folks who are drawn to her philosophy and methods (myself included), there are actually real brick and mortar CM schools currently in the United States. Because of the nature of the authors' experience, this book is full of practical information! The funny thing is that I wouldn't necessarily describe it as the most inspirational Charlotte Mason book I own. For the Children's Sake and A Charlotte Mason Companion are actually vying for that role. Those two books sure do give you a warm fuzzy for CM. The problem for me, personally, has been moving from the warm fuzzy to my practical homeschooling in 2008.I have spent more hours than I would like to admit reading homeschool philosophy and perusing Charlotte Mason web sites. The problem that gnawed at me until I read this book, however, was the feeling that CM lovers of today were hearkening back to Victorian times a bit too much for my liking. A great deal of discussion goes into what CM would have liked and what she would not have liked--audio books, computers, the internet, digital cameras for nature study, Story of the World, Hakim's History of US series. Well, the bottom line is that we can't decisively answer those questions. So, you find that many current CM homeschoolers bend over backwards to find books used in the old CM schools because they know those titles met her standards. They search for out of print titles, read many public domain books online, and generally have a belief that older means better. This particular issue is where I found the greatest value of this book.From page 30: "People like Charlotte Mason are rare and vital. They contribute both stability and continuity as they maintain the clear infrastructure of truth in their work; yet life bubbles up in them with freshness. Their response to actual life and persons creates a relevance and newness to their work without sacrificing the roots. This approach contrasts with a more usual trend toward a deadening legalism that squeezes out new ideas. She pointed out the limitations of a set curriculum plan as well as its value. Every year new books are published, and they need to be considered."From page 37: "The schools and classes that used the old PNEU programs used to await the yearly program with interest and enthusiasm. Old favorites and classic books from our heritage are included from year to year. But then a Baden-Powell writes a scouting book, and that opens new avenues. A new book on planets, engines, or medieval castles arrives and is chosen."WOW! Finally, freedom from the guilt of thinking that mixing up the classics with some new books is not only acceptable but what CM did. Finally, I can stop looking for the "perfect" CM curriculum and give myself more credit and permission to create a CM style curriculum that is perfect for my children. The fact is, from those using the actual books that she used in her time to those using a combination of those classics and some newer material, I doubt anyone is using the exact combination of materials that she would be using if she were alive today. Her curriculum was living, just like the books she chose, and no one can presume to know what specific choices she would make if alive today.The greatest point I take from this book is that a Charlotte Mason education is not about exact book titles. It is about a specific way of viewing children and education mixed in with some phenomenal and proven methods of learning. Surely, it is about saying no to twaddle and yes to classics and well-written living books. However, after subscribing to many CM Yahoo groups and perusing every CM web site available, this book was a breath of fresh air, inspiring me to realize that I can have a CM homeschool while making my own choices about particular books. I won't accept anything dumbed-down but I will keep current without feeling like I'm getting it wrong. The funny thing is that in looking through all my other CM books again after reading this one, I see that the same point was made in all--that a CM education isn't just about specific books. However, in this book it is a major point, where in the others it was minor enough for me to have glanced right over it without really stopping to ponder that reality.The foundation that CM provides is spot on and her techniques will never age. History and science, however, do age. History titles, in particular, offer a challenge when we consider the extremely negative stereotypes of certain ethnic groups that are the norm in older literature. Science and technology have made leaps and bounds since CM's day and education needs to keep in step with those changes.I heartily recommend this book. Aside from what I've already mentioned, the descriptions of her philosophy and techniques are some of the best I've seen. Additionally, specifics about curriculum scope and schedules are given. I'm also particularly fond of Jack Beckman's discussion of history, which puts the subject at the forefront of "the science of relations." (A scope is laid out for grades 1-8 which is very useful.) On page 164, I found some of his most useful words about the study of history."...history became for us the unifying 'discipline of choice' due to our belief that all aspects of life fit under its broad sweep....as the student ponders the Renaissance, she will be challenged by the works of Donatello and Titian (art), the thoughts of da Vinci (science, medicine, technology), and the words of Petrarch (poetry). Thus, we employed a learning methodology that was history-driven and thematic in nature."Again, these are modern day educators who work in CM schools in the United States, doing their best to interpret her philosophy and maintain her high standards. This book has been an amazing gift to me as I try to do the same in my homeschool. The book has given me more confidence and helps me feel a freedom that I didn't get from every other CM book I have read. I feel guilt-free searching Amazon for modern treasures. I feel fine about doing some inquiry science with my young elementary kids. We'll be spending an entire day, every week, deep in the woods of our nearby state park, listening to classic literature on my iPod on the way there and back. We'll be narrating classic stories as well as more recent living books. We'll be enjoying classical music and jazz, fine art (including modern), and poetry with tea every afternoon. We will use computer software to help us learn Spanish. We will have short lessons. We will have a Charlotte Mason inspired school in these modern times.

This book claims to be a practical application of Charlotte Mason's ideas, but it seems instead to be a lot of (albeit poetic) philosophizing. You will not find book lists, discipline plans, or practical teacher to teacher advice. This book left me thinking a Charlotte Mason school sounds very nice in theory, but I have little more notion of how to implement it as a teacher than I did before reading this book.

This book captures the essence of Charlotte Mason's rather rigorous advice in a condensed practical overview. I would love to see Elaine Cooper et al expand the work so it can become as easy to grab a guide as The Well Trained Mind. It has that potential. Just doesn't seem fully realized.

Although this book is designed for the classroom, it very nicely summarizes what the Charlotte Mason method of education is and what it's not, making it a necessary resource for the home educator. It goes to the heart of the subjects and how to implement them. It provides an outline and a structure for you to base your school upon if you so wish. The book is written by various experts on the Charlotte Mason method, providing fresh perspectives throughout. There are short chapters on History, Spelling, Poetry, Math, Foreign Languages, Science and Nature Studies and all the major subjects. The extensive explanation of narration is essential. Susan Shaeffer McCaulay also contributed to this book. I highly recommend this book to anybody interested to know more about the Charlotte Mason method and those wanting to implement her method at home or in the classroom. Together with Charlotte Mason's books and Karen Andreola's A Charlotte Mason Companion, When Children Love to Learn completes an unbeatable combination for the Charlotte Mason homeschooler.

Excellent resource for helping me to better understand Miss Mason’s philosophy and methods for education. It has multiple applications for a school and/or home school setting.

Very good information and more direct examples of how to apply the principles in real life than other Charlotte Mason books I've read but you really have to dig for what you get. No bulleted points, or lists of example activities for different age groups. Overall, worth the money and time to find what you're looking for.

Charlotte Mason gives practical information for homeschooling children. I love the built in Biblical integration that she emphasizes. This book is a great resource for beginning home schooling parents as well as a good reminder to those who have been schooling for years.
