Prague Essential Travel guideHis best advice - stay outside of the city!!! Go into the city for fun, tours, museums, food, etc. Consider eating outside the city!It is possible to get on the #22 tram or any of them going in the opposite direction. If you cannot read Czech, at least have a compass, used away from steel railroad tracks, to find north and south so you can catch your mistake. We used Apple iPhone and maps to solve the problem. Prague is a very big place and could be confusing without a very good map. We bought the 3 day pass which covers the trams, below ground metro, so ride with enthusiasm to even remote scattered sites. Skip taxi's except for a final luxurious ride back to airport with a private driver. Ask the hotel to arrange that. Hotel Adalbert was the best find. Go to neighborhood restaurants. Same good food as the larger tourist places and 1/2 price! Excellent beers, too. Avoid the tour groups and the ad-hoc tour groups. Follow the book and really enjoy this city.

This was perfect for our three-day trip to Prague. We tried a few of Rick Steve's customized walks to see different sights off the beaten path and a few of his locally-loved restaurant recommendations. The restaurants were fantastic, the walks were worthwhile, and his information never let us down. I'll be using Rick Steve's products again if we go on another European trip. In fact, I bought two extra copies of this book for two relatives who were visiting Prague in the near future.

Very useful and practical book. Steves can make your planning and sightseeing so much more fun because he cuts to the heart of what you need to know. Maybe a little more in-depth discussion of the artistic but often problematic cobblestone paving would have been useful to me (every sharp, pointy little cobblestone seemed to have my name on it; and the tram tracks are not exactly embedded into the surface level of the broader cobblestones of the streets.). His self-guided walking tours and restaurant recommendations are particularly useful. Take his advice about riding the trams for getting around and for seeing areas out of the tourist centers. Very instructive. The metro system is amazingly swift and runs on time. We found his advice particularly useful in exploring the Jewish Quarter for most of a day. If you have any knowledge of European Jewish life and history (and perhaps more importantly, if you don't), the Quarter and the "model" but very real concentration camp just outside the city will be a heart-stopping revelation. He tells you to pull out the book pages you need, rather than lug the whole book along for a specific destination. I supplemented his information with other books that go into greater depth about various locales and sights (and their names in Czech). His love of the history and culture is excellent and succinctly presented, and those sections will make your trip much more enjoyable.

I purchased Rick Steves Prague & The Czech Republic tour book as an addendum to the information I already had from the tour company with which I was travelling and for the few extra days I was staying in Prague after the tour. It served the purpose perfectly. The map within the book helped to view the relationship of the various neighborhoods in Prague: New Town, Old, Town, The Jewish Quarter, The Lesser Quarter and the Castle Quarter. The book helped to both enhance information I received from my guide and to remind me of what I had learned. Finally, it helped me to begin to understand the Czech money, because even though the Czech Republic is part of the European Union and the Euro is accepted in some places, for the most part, the Czech Koruna (Crown) is the most widely accepted form of money. The tour I was on took us to many towns outside of Prague in the Czech Republic. This guide book helped me to orient myself within the country. I highly recommend it.

(There are many reviews here; but I wanted to chime in with one for the Ninth Edition, since most are for older versions.)I am packing my bags to return home from Prague and plan to leave this for the next person in this apartment, so I thought I'd write a quick review. I wish I'd used the book more than I did, but the recommendations we used were top notch. (As I'm leaving and skimming through "what did I miss"?, I realize that yeah, just riding a tram such as 22 to get a feel for things would have been a great idea.)We stayed in Old Town, which is noisy but wonderful. And probably what I enjoyed most about Prague has been wandering around the crooked lanes and getting a little bit lost and stumbling on a nice place to eat and some David Cerny statues. Pick a direction to head and wander around... we spent several days with this strategy and just loved Prague to pieces. This is why we didn't end up picking up the book much. We never had a bad meal, for example, sometimes seeking out a particular place, but often just finding one.But of course, one wants to know the things "not to miss", so a book is helpful, as are the back stories and logistical tips, and I have really enjoyed this book for this.Food highlights for us included a splurge to eat at Hotel u Prince Terasa (thanks to Rick's advice), which was not as expensive as we'd feared. (About $120 US for two of us, with all the food we could want and many drinks as we sat their enjoying our lovely perch.) We also enjoyed the vegetarian Maitrea and Mjelnice... but really, everything was great, whether we sought it out or stumbled onto it.We used Rick's advice to pick the sights we wanted to see, as well as to decide to take a day trip to Cesky Krumlov.Anyway, great guide, and I recommend it to you.

This was in the news again, 10 years after the first edition of this book, as a judge declared that the collector who first brought the ossuary to light couldn't be declared a fraud. For every expert who claimed the inscription was faked, others could show it isn't.Really, much hasn't changed since this book was published. It gives a compelling case why there is a high probablilty that the inscription is real. It also addresses the claims of those who think it was a hoax. Many will be surprised that a close look at their claims reveals much uncertainty on the skeptics' part. Their claims of "hoax" aren't as cut and dry as they made it sound. It's like they want it to be a hoax and grasp at straws trying to prove their assertion. A great read to illuminate the vague headlines. There is much controversy about much of these books as all the names used are very familiar to all of Israel. Most of what has been collected is bone boxes with inscription on all and some authenicated and some not. James was one of four brothers of Jesus. Jesus also had two half sisters as well, but the Catholic Church only says they are cousins and none of that is authenicated either. Iampresently reading several books of this nature. Most Roman catholics would consider this book a lie as what the Bible says about brothers, Roman catholics percieve as cousins and that Mary and Joseph never consumated their marriage, such nonesense from a Church that wants it people to have loads of children.

Excellent information regarding James, archaeology, collectors, and the specifics of the James, Son of Joseph Brother of Yeshua ossuary. Worthwhile and well-written.

THIS BOOK WAS REAL...ALL THE SUBJECT MATTER WAS A COMPLETE FRAUD AS THE ANTIQUE DEALER WHO MADE A FAKE COFFIN WAS RIDICULED BY AUTHORITIES FOR THE BASIS OF THIS BOOK.

This is really two books in one, and both are excellent. Hershel Shanks (editor of my favorite mag, Biblical Archaeology Review) tells the story of the discovery of the James ossuary, and Ben Witherington describes the person both scholars believe this limestone burial box belonged to: James, the brother of Jesus. I’ve been following Shanks’ arguments in BAR over the years, so I already know he’s a proponent of the ossuary’s authenticity.The box itself is inscribed “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus.” The Bible agrees: Jesus’ father was Joseph and one brother was James. The box was discovered in the collection of a private collector, who had no recollection of its origin … and no idea of its potentially incredible value. It’s dated pretty accurately to the first century, so while we cannot say with any certainty that it’s authentic to THE Jesus, both authors are convinced it’s an authentic first-century bone box.This practice of removing the bones from the tomb and burying them again in a small box was practiced only for a short time, from about 20 BC to 70 AD. This, too, points to the period of Jesus. But what are the odds that this box once held the bones of the brother of Jesus? All three of these names—Jesus (Yeshua), James (Ya’akov), and Joseph (Yosef)—were quite common back then, but it’s still possible to estimate the odds. One estimate is that about 20 such James’s (with the indicated brother and father) would have lived in that period; another estimate is between 2 and 4. But how many would have a brother so famous that his brother’s name would be indicated on his ossuary? That would be a rarity. If this is the brother of the “real” Jesus, then, as Shanks posits, this little box may be “the most astonishing find in the history of archaeology.”Then Witherington takes over halfway through the book to tell us about James, the brother of Jesus. Who he was, what he taught, how he died. While Peter and Paul may have become the most famous apostles, James was in reality probably the most important after the death of Jesus. He was appointed as the head of the Jerusalem church, the mother church.Among other things, Witherington goes head to head with the Catholic doctrine of Mary’s perpetual virginity. While the Bible lists several brothers of Jesus, Catholics maintain that Mary remained a virgin after Jesus was born, and many believe the listed “brothers” are really just cousins. This idea was promoted by St. Jerome. Witherington quotes John P. Meier, a leading Catholic New Testament scholar, as saying that if the James ossuary is authentic, it is probably the last nail in the coffin of Jerome’s view of the brothers of Jesus being cousins.I’ve always enjoyed the writings of both these authors, and this book doesn’t disappoint.

The first reviewer may be referring to a different book, as I don't remember the name Connie Epstein being on there.This book is not a lesson on the craft of writing for children, despite what the title might tell you. There are no diagrams for an arc of conflict or character questionnaires. Instead, it contains the essays of six famous children's book authors on the sources of their inspiration. It's very funny and at times, personal--a great read for both aspiring writers and people who just enjoy children's books.I recommend this book as a chaser to a more technical nuts-and-bolts of writing book. It will remind you of the spiritual and personal side of writing, rather than simply plot, conflict, and characters.

Wish we had it months ago.The author knows what he's talking about. Provides a great overview of thearchitecture, file and subsystem layout. Also provides great information on using the 'built in' debug capability of the server -- very useful!I was expecting to be disappointed, I was not. The content was righton the mark for those folks interested on working on server internals.

An excellent overview of the MySQL codebase, philosophy, and the design decisions that have made MySQL what it is today. Even though I have never touched the MySQL source before (it can be a daunting beast for the uninitiated), Sasha's explanations made me comfortable with the 'internals' and finally lifted the 'magic veil' off the engine. 'MySQL internals' has a perfect balance of high-level explanations, and low-level code samples to help you understand the inner workings of the database.After reading this book you should be comfortable enough to tackle the source, and you'll also have deep understanding of the storage engines and how to configure them, how the query parser works, how the optimizer decides on the execution plan, and much more. This is a must read for any DBA, or a programmer who wants to see a great example of a high-performance, reliable UNIX server.

In Understanding MySQL Internals, Sasha Pachev, a MySQL-focused consultant and former member of the MySQL development team, takes us on a tour of how MySQL works and how it is built.Starting with an overview of MySQL history and architecture, the book quickly moves us through working with the source code to build and run the product in a debugger. Drawing on his deep experience with the software, Mr. Pachev explains the coding conventions used to develop MySQL and why you should use them when modifying the software yourself.The author delineates the different functional "modules" (a term he coined himself to better explain the database, technically speaking there are no defined modules in MySQL's architecture) of MySQL and how they interrelate. I found Understanding MySQL Internals interesting and fun, and surprisingly easy to read for a book covering such a sophisticated piece of software. The author also does a good job explaining the engineering trade-offs of different MySQL configurations. Speaking of configuration, the book shows you how to add your own configuration option to the mysqld daemon.Chapter 7, the largest chapter in the book, is 41 pages long. It covers the MySQL storage engine interface. This chapter explains how to integrate your own custom storage engine into MySQL and contains the source code for two custom storage engine examples (one for MySQL 4.1, the other for version 5.1). You can download this source code from O'Reilly's web site. Despite this one long chapter, the book is surprising short, only 234 pages.I believe this book has value outside of MySQL. It does a good job showing how MySQL is essentially a well designed piece of software: a high-performance, reliable Unix server. The book also touches on the multi-platform aspects of MySQL design. Those of you designing other types of server software may benefit from studying how MySQL is constructed.This book isn't for everyone, but if you are serious about MySQL in particular or database software design in general then this title certainly deserves a look.
