Perhaps only a Tolkien fanatic would appreciate these books about his early drafts for Lord of the Rings. The fascinating thing for readers is how much this story evolved as Tolkien wrote it. Some events were foreseen early on while others were late developments. Tolkien tried out some ideas, then rejected or changed them. Others gradually took form as he wrote. It’s fascinating to read Christopher’s Tolkien’s notes about the state of these early papers, where his father would write up an outline, some points with a question mark, then comment on those points in the margins with “yes” or “no, better to have. . .” At one point, Christopher makes the comment about his father realizing that what he’d written wasn’t what “really happened,” suggesting that after a time, this story took on its own life and needed only for Tolkien to channel its message.The title of this volume is misleading. The book does not focus on Saruman and Orthanc, but on the continued development of the story. The first 190 pages cover the same material as the previous book, “The Return of the Shadow,” with new revisions. From the tomb of Balin, the story continues through the breaking of the fellowship to the first glimpses of Frodo and Sam in Mordor and King Theoden in Edoras. We see that Tolkien foresaw Frodo’s poisoning by the spiders, capture by orcs, and rescue from the tower by Sam. Other plotlines weren’t so clear. Legolas and Gimli originally turned for home and encountered the resurrected Gandalf. Boromir survived to return to Minas Tirith. Aragorn was to marry Eowyn, the character of Arwen not yet having appeared in the narrative. Theoden was simply an old man dubious of Gandalf, without a treacherous Wormtongue brainwashing him according to Saruman’s directions. Originally, it was Gimli who received a green gem from Galadriel and adopted the name of Elfstone. Galadriel herself took shape gradually after Lothlorien was introducedNames presented a great challenge for Tolkien. We saw in “The Return of the Shadow” that he couldn’t settle on names for the hobbits, even when their characters were established. In this book, it’s Aragorn he had difficulty with. Elfstone and Ingold were other considerations. Even when he finally made up his mind, we know he wasn’t done because he still used the epithet “Trotter.”Some chapters are intriguing or boring depending on your area of interest. We read the several lengthy precursors to the Lay of Earendil that Bilbo in Rivendell. A chapter is devoted to the evolution of maps of Middle Earth, and the appendix explores the development of runic writing.One passage I found particularly interesting concerns Celeborn and Galadriel. We know from “Return of the King” that he did not accompany her on the ship to Valinor, and his parting words to Aragorn suggested that this could be a permanent separation “may your fate be different from mine and you keep your treasure.” In one of the outlines, Tolkien writes that Celeborn desired to stay in the world, reinforcing this possibility.Reading through these books gives one a new appreciation for the process of novel-writing. While some authors may have their stories already well-mapped out beforehand, others may go through a period of evolution involving alternate plot lines and events. For those who are interested in the roads not taken, “The Treason of Isengard” offers a tantalizing glimpse into what might have been.

I am a writer and looking into the writing craft of master like JRR Tolkien is an invaluable experience. The work is meticulously researched by Tolkien's son--who also did many of the illustrations used in the various editions. You couldn't get a more conscientious and knowledgeable guide, a guide who had full access to all of Tolkien's notes. It's a real pleasure, at least for a writer/geek, to read several versions of the various chapters and see how the final vision came into being. Did you know that Aragon was in fact slated to be a wooden-shoe wearing hobbit named Trotter? Did you know the original story was going to be about Bilbo going to see another dragon (Smaug's magic put a desire in him to find another dragon)? The series is full of interesting revelations.However, don't start with this book. Begin your studies with the Return of the Shadow and read all four volumes. You'll be glad you did.

For someone who got bogged down in the first volume of the History of the Lord of the Rings, The Treason of Isengard was a far easier read. While you do end up back in Hobbiton once again, this volume mostly explores the fourth phase of Tolkien's writing of the Lord of the Rings. It ends with "The King of the Golden Hall" and contains an appendix about Dwarven runes, which is quite interesting.

I grew up with Tolkien and was a huge fan before the Jackson films ever hit the silver screen. If you want to have a more in-depth understanding of Middle Earth and its histories this is one of the books you need to read. If you wanted to know why a great wizard would choose a path that could only lead to death, sorrow and destruction this is the book which holds the answers.

So this and another book were a gift to my brother. He said he'd been putting off buying them for a few months so he'd have somethings to tell people what he wanted for Christmas. When he opened them, he looked like a little kid again (he was 31 at the time, so that made me feel good).

Wallpaper city guides aren't quite like your average guide--they focus on the architecture, art, and design of the city. I particularly liked this little Bogota guide, as much of the information available for Colombia was quite underwhelming. This guide gave a great visual picture of the city, and gave me some great ideas for which neighborhoods to visit and which sites to seek out once I arrived. Another plus, it's very small, and while it has limited information, it's also extremely easy to carry around with you while touring the city.

I knew this wasn't going to be a standard guidebook. But the information it provides is so unsubstantial, so utterly useless, that I can't see it being helpful to anyone. There are only a couple examples in each section (shopping, restaurants) and they cater to very wealthy travelers. This guide managed also to make a number of sensationalistic claims about Colombia, with references to the former kidnap capital, the former murder capital (Medellin).

Seriously, these are not for everyone. If you love fabulous design and that is an important part of why you travel, Wallpaper Guides are the best!

Best pocket guides available, because they are the smallest, and actually fit in an actual pocket - imagine that. Have a map in back you can mark up, several blank pages to write your itinerary in. More "contemporary" than most guides, many average tourists won't like. Younger people may. We did.

They are so easy to travel with, doesn't take too much space in your bag and it's filled with wonderful architectural, design and cool tips of where to go and what to do while traveling to that city, this case, Washington DC.Totally recommend all of the Wallpaper* City Guides if you are into Design in general.

not a travel guide at all,but it has beautiful pics,and interesting points of the city.The pics alone are worth the price.LOve this series,planning to buy several other city guides.

I recently spent a day and a half in Rome, and this was an almost-perfect guide to all of the sorts of things I like to do when I visit cities. I say "almost" because there's no map! The book lists the street address for each destination, but fails to include info on how to get there (e.g., bus lines, nearest subway stop). So: buy this as a handy guide to all things hip and happening, but also invest in an indexed street map so you can get where you want to go.

Full of heart-wrenching emotion and poignant truths, this story of faith and family will leave you breathless!I absolutely loved the Carthage Chronicles and can’t wait to experience this incredible author’s next adventure!

Well, as the saying goes, "all good things must come to an end." And this is the case with Lynne Gentry's Carthage Chronicles trilogy. The storyline in books 1&2 were so exciting that it was hard to wait for the release of the third, and unfortunately last, book in this series. Lynne did not disappoint with picking back up with the story and carrying us deeper into the character's lives. I was so truly invested in the characters that I didn't want the book to end! Lynne's writing style is captivating and makes it so easy to imagine and feel what her characters are experiencing. I am truly sad that this trilogy has come to an end, but I just have to hope that Lynne will continue to excite us and spur us on to think deeply about things as she continues to publish other books!

This was a heartbreaking conclusion, but I don't see how it could have been any other way. Lynne Gentry captured my attention from the first chapter of the first book and held it all the way through the book study questions of the final book--I didn't want it to end so I read through every word :)! This trilogy was well-written, well planned, and well researched. Go ahead and buy the three books at the same time because you won't want to wait after you finish each book! The fictional characters were brought to life so well that they'll be in my thoughts for a long time! I can picture each character and setting as if I had photos to view.

Enjoy reading Christian fiction, no swearing, with good taste in romance.

I am now an emotional wreck! This story of true love and steadfast faith is one that will stay with me for a long time.

This was such a good conclusion for the series! I loved every single book in it. In my opinion you should start with the first and read all of them in order.I loved how Maggie grew from the second book to this one. You really see her parents in her.

From the beginning of this series, I couldn't put it down. The characters were captivating and each book left me in suspense of what was to come. A glimpse into the reality of what history held along with the challenge of taking a stand fir Christ. May I share the love that was held between these characters and their faith in the One True God.

They may fight, play soccer or take photos, but every time it will end up in confusion.Goscinny found his perfect partner in crime in the illustrator Sémpe. The drawings are always exceptional and funny -- as much as the text. With his boyish mind, Nicholas never fails to make us laugh and learn French. The more you read the book, the more you want to read the other volumes.

Even though I am no longer a kid, I enjoyed reading this story about Le Petit Nicolas and his friends. The characters are very lively and entertaining. The new vocabulary learnt was very useful. This is a great book for anyone whether you are an advanced beginner, intermediate or an advanced French student. I won't recommend this for a first year beginning French student though. The vocabulary can be a bit challenging for a 1st year French student. I can't wait to read the other series of Le Petit Nicolas.

This author can certainly write stories. The pace is engrossing, the descriptions of the locations vivid and the characters well formed. The reasons why I deduct a star are a) Because there are parts where the action becomes too much, stretching credulity too far. And b) The ending is too inconclusively predictable and comes up too fast. If you like a good story, though, Marius Gabriel will not disappoint and does not with the Seventh Moon, the title of which I am still unable to connect with the book, but don't let that put you off.

This is my first Marius Gabriel book. When I saw the number of titles published by this author, I hoped that I’d found another writer to follow. I have!I’m not much of a genre reader, because I do like the characters I undertake a journey with in a book to be well-developed – I want a relationship with them.I also want a novel to teach me something: about history, human nature, the supernatural, the world…anything that will leave me feeling better informed.Despite the above, I am uncompromising when it comes to the basic requirement of a novel: it must be a good story. The plot must be well developed; the action must be at a good pace; I must feel that I do not want to miss a day in my reading, so eager am I to unravel the secret woven into its pages.Finally, in addition to all the above, if an author is able to create a mood, a sense of time and place, through the use of patient, poetic prose, than I am perfectly satisfied. My reading experience could not be any better.The Seventh Moon, by Marius Gabriel, fulfilled every one of my requirements for a perfectly crafted novel. I’ll be back.

Very well written. A lot of interesting information about the Vietnam war that I never knew intermingled with a great story of love and loss. Good characters and lots of action.

This book was as new experience for me. I generally don't like fantasy, but I did fall in love with these characters. This is the first book that I have read by Mr. Gabriel, and I marvel at the imagination that a lot of these authors have. It is a very different, and great read. I'm going on to another of book shortly

He is really a good writer. The storyline s far fetched, but it really kept my interest! What I didn't like were the three or four descriptive sex scenes. To me, that takes away from the story. But it was good. Whether or not I will read more, I don't know. I will have to reD the reviews first.

I just recently discovered Marius Gabriel"s novels and, while I haven't read them all as yet, this one is definitely my favorite so far. The story line moved back and forth in time with ease and proper coordination. I cared about both of the main protagonists and found that the author's imagery caused me to clearly picture the various settings in my mind. A good story - interesting characters - an exciting climax.

What an awesome storyteller. Read nonstop until the end. Really hope there is another book to this story.Please consider writing it.

I hardly ever write reviews, but this book is really excellent. It's the rare programming book that is API-specific but not just a reformulation of the documentation. It's clearly based on long experience and full of information that, as far as I know, is not available anywhere else: measurements, explanations for why things are the way they are, and examples of code that doesn't work the way you might expect. I've been programming Cocoa for almost 20 years, so I had figured out many of the specific points on my own, but I read the book cover-to-cover and don't feel that any of my time was wasted. The writing is concise and filled with little nuggets of insight. The principles are timeless, so I expect this book to remain relevant and even be of interest to programmers using other platforms.

This book is well written, thoughtful, and accessible to beginning developers. If you're new to the platform this is a must-read. If you're an experienced iOS / macOS developer you'll find this book to be like an extended conversation with a long-time expert. It's more than helpful and the author's candor is refreshing. Marcel Weiher has opinions based on deep experience, and he knows the difference between an opinion and an objective fact. This book is rich with helpful examples showing how to circle in upon a performance issue which might not be obvious at first blush. Developers, if you work on a team you'll want your managers to read this book, too. (I am the CEO of illumineX, inc, maker of custom software for large enterprises and consumer software for macOS and iOS. I'm going to give a copy of this book to every developer on my team.)

Very talented writer, lots of useful information. Could use better editing: more than a few typos and the level of the book bounces around a lot.

Marcel is a former Apple engineer who's thoughts and opinions are strong, well-informed and are still well-respected within that large pool of excellent software minds. This book is awesome and if you intend to do anything on a macOS or iOS (or any other Apple platform) do buy and read this book. Wisdom and experience and yes strongly worded pragmatism throughout.I will add to it that Mr. Weiher is well known as an advocate of all of the things SmallTalk brought to Objective-C and you should understand the perspective he presents is that Objective-C is a strong and flexible language. Understanding this will make more sense in reading the book.

Absolutely terrible!

Developing for the Mac for more than 13 years and many other operating systems and CPU architectures for more than two decades, I've learnt a lot about what makes code performant. Yet I still learnt new things and picked up new ideas reading this book. If you're serious about writing performant code (not only) for Apple's platforms, I can wholeheartedly recommend this unique collection of knowledge, opinions and advice.

When I first purchased this book, I was looking for Leonardo's drawings, sketches and art studies. For this, the book is fair and has a nice collection of his drawings, even though I wish they were bigger and the printing on paper more vivid. But what really surprised me on this book was his writings on several subjects. Some of his studies on anatomy, perspective, light/shade and his vision on art itself were priceless. Its nice to see a little bit on how this great artist thought. Its also nice to see how persistent and dedicated he was as an artist and how he suggests an artist to go through his studies:"If you wish to have a sound knowledge of the forms of subjects begin with the details of them and do not go on to the second step till you have the first well fixed in memory and in practice. And if you do otherwise you will throw away your time, or certainly greatly prolong your studies"So, if you wish to purchase this book, only for its images, you would do a better deal, purchasing "Leonardo da Vinci: The Complete Paintings and Drawings" from Taschen. But, if you wish to read his notes on several of his drawings, this is the book to purchase.

Great way to get several of Leonardo's notes all in one place. This book focuses on the writings - there are pictures too, but don't expect a picture for everything in the book because they aren't the focus. It can sometimes be difficult to match up the writings with some of the pictures, though I guess this isn't really avoidable. I also bought a separate book that focuses on the pictures, and between the two I am pretty happy.I realize the man left behind something like 6,000 pages of drawings and notes (and who knows how much else lost to time), so it's almost impossible to get all of the notes in one volume and this book does a pretty good job of selecting interesting comments. There are a few things I found myself wishing for here and there, though some of it could be more personal preference than objective omissions.I got this in paperback style, and it is bound fairly well. I do see the pages eventually falling out if I were to read it a lot but not right away.

Sure it's not the complete works; however, you can find them in most college libraries. This is a handy personal collection with excellent quality reproductions of the illustrations.

This book far exceeded my expectations. The reproductions of the sketches are excellent varied and profuse. I especially enjoy reading the vignettes accompanying them, As an artist, I feel having this as a reference is consistently supportive of much of my creative efforts. I bought a "used" book and the condition was much better than what I expected. I definitely have no regrets.
