It was the American Dream by Mail Order Smithsonian Americans have ordered from Sears, Roebuck just about everything they have needed for their homes for 100 yearsbut from 1908 to 1940, some 100,000 people also purchased their houses from this mail-order wizard. Sears ready-to-assemble houses were ordered by mail and shipped by rail wherever a boxcar or two could pull in to unload the meticulously precut lumber and all the materials needed to build an exceptionally sturdy and well-designed house. From Philadelphia, Pa., to Coldwater, Kans., and Cowley, Wyo., Sears put its guarantee on quality bungalows, colonials and Cape Cods, all with the latest modern conveniencessuch as indoor plumbing. Houses by Mail tells the story of these precut houses and provides for the first time an incomparable guide to identifying Sears houses across the country. Arranged for easy identification in 15 sections by roof type, the book features nearly 450 house models with more than 800 illustrations, including drawings of the houses and floor plans. Realizing that the market for such a book isn't exactly the largest, clearly both the author and the publisher put quite a bit of effort into this publication. To be able to have such a reference for field work is appreciated over and over. Been seeking out Sears Kit homes where I live and now I will be able to verify, through the pages of this book, exactly whether the home I'm seeing is actually a Sears or some knockoff. Sure, you could use the phone or even tablet but to have a book helps tremendously when a homeowner comes out to ask why you're looking at his house, maybe even taking a picture or two. The reproduction illustrations aren't the best but far better than carrying valuable vintage catalogs and the text does flow along. If you enjoy hunting for the next Sears home near you, this is invaluable.
In my opinion, it's the definitive book on Sears Mail Order Houses. Homes of every description...from cottages to mansions, with illustrations, descriptions, and most with floor plans. Would I like to see larger illustrations? Of course, but then it would have had to be a huge (and expensive) publication. As it is, the illustrations are adequate, the information is formatted nicely, and if you need more information there are many sources to access. Highly recommended.
I'm the author of "The Houses That Sears Built" and my love of Sears Homes was ignited by this wonderful book. The first 43 pages are photos and stories about real people and their real Sears Homes. This section makes for a delightful and easy read. And it is also a great reference on historic architecture. Sears Homes were patterned after the most popular architecture and housing of the day, so once you get a feel for the dates on Sears Homes, you'll be able to "date" many houses with some accuracy. Also has specific info on how to tell if you own a Sears Home.Rose Thorntonauthor, The Houses That Sears Built
If you're a budding Sears Home fan with the urge to go one step further, you have to get this book. As the only book with an example of each and every Sears Home, you can't feel confident in your Sears Home search without this book in hand. Nonetheless, the quality of the printing is disappointing. The illustrations from the Sears Catalog are reproduced so poorly as to lose much of their usefulness. If the picture is so blurry that you can't discern whether the house is clad with shake shingles or brick, then why bother? The Rosemary Thornton book does a much better job in that area, but, as it lists only a sampling of Sears designs, it is not definitive. Therefore this book, though flawed, is essential.
THE book to have for researching Sears houses.
After renovating our house and finding odd codes on it, I found a book at the library that displayed my house was a Sears mail-order home -- very interesting read on history of how homes were ordered and shipped in pieces like the Lincoln log toys of my childhood very cool and informative.WES
Fun thoughts and ideas about your old house!
Excellent background material on my research of "Sears' Houses!" This educator and historian simply did not realize how many households in the 20th century had Sears to thank for "complete" homes!!!
