Review

“In Death in Midsummer Yukio Mishima unfolds to English-language readers a range of his talents as he explores a variety of pathways into the complex Japanese personality. He can be funny, even hilarious, but he is also capable of plunging into the dark psychic depths achieved by Hitchcock.” - Robert Trumbull, The New York Times Book Review“When I read a writer such as Mishima I’m not only experiencing a narrative but also dueling with another darkness behind the words. A seemingly empty house haunted with invisible presences obtusely felt, and the tingle of awareness that someone else is in it, watching.” - Benjamin Hale, n+1“Genius...Yukio Mishima is one of the great writers of the 20th-century. An extraordinary mind.” - The Los Angeles Times

Death in Midsummer and Other Stories comes with ten stories that are all great for the most part. One of them is a play with a Kabuki theme. The prose is neither too heavy nor too crisp. It reminded me of the pocketbooks translation of, "Spring Snow" which I also enjoyed. Although I enjoyed some stories more than others they were all worth reading and especially so for any fan of Mishima's other works. The set opens up with, "Death in Midsummer" which is a story about... death/loss (surprise surprise). One story that stood out was, "Patriotism." I won't give anything away except that it was one of the more terrifying short stories I've read. It was really brutal but as I've said earlier- worth reading. Another favorite story was, "The Priest of Shiga Temple and His Love." Again, I won't give anything away but the tone of that story did a lot as it came off as religious (and wasn't preachy). So these stories were the highlights for me but again, they were all good and make this set a worhwhile purchase for any Mishima fan or those looking for an introduction to the author... since there is variety in setting and direction for these stories.

I bought this collection because I wanted to read "The Pearl," which had been recommended to me as the best short story to read for understanding literary voice perspective (true! in my humble opinion). But I enjoyed the entire collection. It is varied--often dark, as you would expect from Mishima, but occasionally whimsical. My favorites were "The Pearl," which I have now read front to back several times, and "Patriotism," which I found utterly chilling.

This is the first book by Mishima I've read, and I plan to read more.

Mishima writes wonderfully, his themes are so close to the human soul that sometimes they are beautifully painful words to read, but oh if it's worth to read each and every one of his stories in this collection. You'll be a more insightful, soulful human after you are done with this collection of short stories. Inspiring classic literature

Read in college.

he is one of my favorite japanese authors. i've read all of his novels; this book served as an introduction to his stories. and now i know he is a brilliant short/long story writer as well. i wish his life (and death) story would not be overshadowing his works. lately, new publications of his books start with and dwell on his personal conflicts rather than his works. of course the two are interrelated but a first time reader might become biased and focus on symbols in his works where there may be none..

Ten stories by Mishima Yukio; three of which are translated by Edward Seidensticker, two by Ivan Morris, three by Donald Keene, and two by Geoffrey Sargent.Personally, I don't care for Seidensticker's style -- his translations always seem so lifeless -- and reading through his three stories [including the "Death in Midsummer" of the title] was nearly torturous. My favorites of this set of short stories were "The Seven Bridges" [Keene, trans.] and "Patriotism" [Sargent, trans.], a look at the last days of a soldier and his wife.Mishima's stories often lack a traditional plot, focusing instead upon the slow development of a single scene, or on emerging human emotions and motives. Death is a recurring theme in all of his work, and is portrayed with a terrible beauty and admiration.Recommended.

Yukio Mishima was many things in his life; an author was only one of them. In general, I have more respect for him as a personality than I do for his individual books. I could go on all day about the man himself, but my praise of this or that novel is usually conditional, and when I find myself thinking of books to re-read just for enjoyment's sake, he usually isn't near the top of my list. I think that these stories are some of his highest-quality work, though, and I can recommend them without any reservations, not just to enthusiasts of Japanese culture or the sort of magnificently sick aesthetic that Mishima represents. The title story, although as coldly inhuman as much of Mishima's work, still seems pyschologically accurate. The second story, Three Thousand Yen, is disarmingly and uncharacteristically sweet, but tempered by a more characteristic ending. Patriotism is probably the standout of this standout, with flawless prose, again backing Mishima's vision with a realistic setting. 'Pearl' is clever, and 'Onegata' is another very polished story, a good candidate for anthologization. 'Swaddling Clothes' is a personal favorite, wickedly barbed and haunting. The greatest strength of this collection is that Mishima never seems to be repeating himself - he explores his central themes from different angles, in a variety of styles, and provides something of outstanding artistic merit.

As a Dallas Cowboys fan, I pride myself on knowing random tid bits of knowledge or facts that people rarely know. When I was searching Amazon for some Christmas gifts and saw this was available, I threw it in my cart as quickly as I could! It took a little while to arrive, but the day that it did, I tore into it. There was a great forward by Darren Woodson, which was a nice surprise, and the book just got better from there. Each "chapter" is broken down into different parts, or sections. It focuses on a particular player for a few short stories, and is filled with all kinds of random facts and fun memories that make for a great read. I hadn't heard of Nick Eatman the author; only Nick Eatman the supporting staff. This was a surprise gem to find, and I highly recommend it for anyone that's a true Cowboys fan, or just wants some more knowledge of players lives.

I've been a fan of the Cowboys since I was a little boy and I've been a fan of Nick Eatman since he was brought on to the dallascowboys.com website. For those who listen to the Lunch Break Podcast, this is an extended version of storytime with Nick. Most of the stories are pretty tame but there's one or two that will make you chuckle. If you're like me, and I know I am, you'll enjoy this book. Pick it up for the Cowboys fan in your family, I know they'll enjoy it.

It was an ok read. I can never get enough of my Dallas Cowboys. I didn't really find a lot of new stories that haven't been covered previously in other books. There were a few, but not a lot. And it only covers the writers personal experience from the time he joined the Cowboys organization. Didn't appear to be a lot of in depth research to mine that hidden nugget of info or angle that hasn't been told many times before.

I really enjoy reading Nick's articles and finally got around to ordering his book; great book, brought back some memories and hit some things I had forgotten about. Great book but did jump back and forth a bit with timelines.

Christmas gift that I already gave a little early. He has kept it next to the recliner and browses through it every few nights and seems to be enjoying the tidbits that are in it!

Very informative. As a fan of the Dallas Cowboys for several decades, I loved reading these stories. I watch the DC podcasts and enjoy Nick Eatman's insights into the game.I also appreciate a fellow Arkansas Razorback's enthusiasm.

The book is fantastic. A must for all Cowboy fans or anyone interested in the unusual situations that involve this NFL team. The author is also a gifted journalist, a knowledgeable and witty talk show host on The Cowboys Break streaming online. Buy it; you'll love it.

The author describes some colorful tales and a bunch of anecdotes from the worst years in Cowboys history, and while some are entertaining, some are dreadful, as the 'Boys have been themselves since the triplets went into the sunset. If I could, I would not buy this book.
