99% of the reviews that I write is to help readers find books and items that I think that would or would not enjoy. I am recommending "Make Your Point" for a more selfish goal. I have sat through way too many terrible presentations that would have greatly benefited from "Make Your Point". If everyone read "Make your Point" I would no longer be exposed to those long winded, rambling, and boring talks that seem to be the norm. "Make Your Point" is both an excellent reference and teaching guide. I think that college students would appreciate the concise approach to public speaking. Business profession will benefit with a refreshing course and the introduction of "The Diamond". "The Diamond" is an approach to clearly and concisely present your ideas wile being confident that your audience is hearing your main points and internalizes the message that you are trying to sned.Final Verdict - I have read many books on effective communication and I can say that "Make Your Point' is at the top of the list. I bought this because I'm at the point in my career where I'm an executive, but still need to dwell in the details a lot. This means I'm frequently "in the weeds" on the analysis side of things, but am also having to succinctly summarize the findings to the highest levels of the organization.Communicating the "high level" summary while including just the key, convincing details can be a tough challenge (for me at least). This book was extremely helpful.I've noticed the change in positive feedback from peers and those above since reading the book and employing the technique.

The most impressive presentation of effective speaking I have ever read. This book is my bible for my toastmasters practice.

The MYP diamond is a great reference tool to help keep things concise. My director taught me a new word: succint! He said he didn't have the time or energy to pick out the important nuggest from my verbose emails. After reading this book and a few others, my communications have greatly increased their effectiveness!

The topic of the book is a great one; the contents however are useless. Had I known the authors were going to simply describe what most people already know about what it takes be a good speaker(have your ideas clear and organized, give examples and provide evidence of what you are talking about, tell people why they should listen to what you have to say, give a mind-blowing conclusion, etc.), I wouldn't have bought the book. I thought the book would contain more useable tips on "how to" be eloquent, as opposed to just describing the characteristics of eloquence. Seems to me that the book was only written as a bait to visit the authors' webpage and pay for other, hopefully more in-depth training courses.Supporting evidence: page 607 (kindle version) talks about how the authors' "real" work includes coaching and videotaping customer service reps to help them appear more friendly and capable (now, that's cool); page 614 says something like "are you the type of person that is boring and frightening? Try smiling; are you the type of person that is friendly but gets no respect? Try giving firm handshakes" (duh!). As an alternative to this book, I recommend Carnegie's "how to win friends and influence people".

I have read many books on the subject of public speaking...and this is by far the best!!!I say this in all honesty. I have taken many courses in public speaking. As my career expanded into sales management I needed to make many presentations and I wished I had this book sooner!!!!It is an easy to read and understand guide to the many aspects of speaking in public. However is goes beyond public speaking. It offers tips and ideas on organizing written proposals etc. etc. etc. I have already used some of the ideas to help secure a large order.The book is very well done and is a great investment for everyone entering into all aspects of sales and business. I read this book today. All 147 pages today. As a leader in my parish, I have been introduced to Alpha through videos, podcasts, webinars, and through our own parish experience of running Alpha for 3 seasons thus far. I realize now the knowledge I had gathered remained quite fragmented in my head and I had been clearly missing key components. The book sort of solved the puzzle in my head and in my heart as well.We (my parish) have celebrated successes in our 3 seasons of Alpha, but we are also facing numerous challenges. I feel deeply inspired by this message and much better equipped to help our team begin to work through those challenges. I can't wait to begin that conversation!!If you care about bringing the message of Christ's Love to others, this book will inspire you and show you a practical (very practical) path. Share it with your pastor, your parish leaders, your ministry leaders, your congregation. It's a team effort without a doubt!

I'm an Alpha Network Director in Ohio—and this may be one of the clearest books/sets of principles I've ever read for not just doing Alpha in Catholic parish but really rolling it out for any church context—Catholic OR otherwise. I'm sharing it with Catholics and Protestants! If you want to do Alpha in a way that it does what it's supposed to do—draw people to Jesus—then read AND IMPLEMENT this book. Soak it all with prayer—invite people who don't know or need to be restored to Jesus and let the Holy Spirit do the work!!!

Very short chapters. Very practical. For a theologian this is a much faster read than Divine Renovation. Both need to be in the hands of all priests. If you are looking to get your parish moving this must be read by all major disciples at your parish.

I recently decided that I wanted to learn some Bootstrap and searched for a book. The Joy of Bootstrap had great reviews so I gave it a go. I have to say I’m very disappointed. This book is incredibly short (yeah it’s 110 pages, but with something like size 16 font!). The book is so short I read it in 45 minutes!I have read hundreds of programming books and this is one of the most basic and cursory I’ve read. After reading it I have no knowledge of what Bootstrap does just that I use CSS classes to do it and some jQuery), no understanding of why, and only a very basic understanding of Bootstrap in general. For example, one of the things I was most excited about was the way Bootstrap handles navigation menus in a responsive manner. Chapter 6 is called “Drop downs and Nav Bars.” It contains a description of what a nav bar is, a screenshot of one, and NO information on how to create one! Instead it directs me to the author’s website… Well I can go to his website without buying the book, so what am I paying for here?The author also fails to explain what are data- attributes, why some of his examples use aria attributes, etc. These seem like important things to understand for HTML5 and Bootstrap. I don’t want to be a copy/paste coder who says “I added aria-valuemax because the example did.” I want to know what it is and why I’d use it. I’d even go so far as to say the author gives bad advice such as telling me that using an input-group-addon for anything other than text is a bad idea. In fact, most standard UI guidelines recommend putting a “search” button as what amounts to an input-group-addon. Unfortunately, the author suggests this as a bad idea… There are some things that are downright wrong. Like telling me to use sr-only to hide text… It’s actually about making text available to screen readers, not hiding text! I have to say too that the author seems to have been learning Bootstrap as he wrote the book. Statements like “I experimented a bit to see if I could find out [what page headers do.]” or “I struggled a bit with this one” or “Eventually I got it to work” or “I played around [… with] some of the classes I thought would work in Wells [and they] do not. Oh well!” don’t exactly give me the impression that the author is a Bootstrap expert. Instead it makes me feel like he played around with Bootstrap for a week, saw there were relatively few books on the topic and figured he’d give it a go. The back cover even seems to indicate this when it talks about how few books there are on the topic.If you have little to know CSS experience, no web development experience (ASP.NET, PHP, etc.) and have only done basic HTML websites, this book is probably useful. For someone like myself who is a seasoned web developer who wanted to learn Bootstrap, this book was a waste of time. About the only thing I thought the book did well was explaining the Bootstrap grid system. I feel like I have a better understanding of how that works for responsive design. However, I think with 2 hours of searching online I’d have gained the same knowledge and $13 in my bank account.

Buying this book was a mistake. I literally read the whole thing in 1 hour. Small pages, big text, lots of pictures, no depth. Also - the author is obviously not a pro. I think HE read the online docs, tried some examples, and wrote the book the next day.I haven't ready anything about Bootstrap before, and I wanted a good, complete reference. While I considered reading the online docs, I like books. I'll admit it - the 4-star rating and Twitter logo on the cover fooled me, so I bought it. It's not that it's a _bad_ book, it's just that it's little more than a very basic overview of Bootstrap.The good: It introduces many of the features and capabilities of Bootstrap, shows some very easy to follow examples, and offers links to more resources and information.The bad: That's all it does. There's no depth here.Final word: I should have saved the $15. I got a good intro to Bootstrap, but I could have bought dinner and read the online docs for free, which I will now have to do anyway. Oh well. #sigh

I actually had issues with this book right off the start. It starts out with the grid system, and I didn't understand his brief explanation. No big deal I thought. It's a complex topic maybe. So I YouTubed a video and understood it. Moved on in the book and his pace is fast and very shallow. His "examples" are often "Go to my website to see this". The examples he does give in the book are simplistic and not very helpful. I finally had to just stop reading when I got to the navigation section. He said "bootstrap is great for navigation". Then, without saying more moved on to the next section. He had tons of typos and bad grammar. His wording was confusing. And by the time I stopped reading I felt like I couldn't trust that he knew what he was talking about.

This book was a waste of money and, worse, time. There are very few cases where the example code is tied to a visual representation of the produced result. There are examples that are just flat wrong. There is a "sample website", and "challenge solutions" to go with it. But there are never examples of how the author approached / solved the problem. One doesn't get to see relevant examples of what the website looks like. An odd snippet here and there, but nothing cohesive. It makes me wonder if this sample website is merely a figment of the author's imagination.Most oft-repeated phrase: There is an example of this code on the http://www.joyofbootstrap.com website titled blah, blah, blah.So save your money, visit the website, play with the examples there. That combined with any tutorial you'll find Googling about would be a better use of your time than reading this book.I'm going to stop now because writing any more would be throwing good time after bad.

I bought Alan's previous books on kickstarter and got a pdf. I got this one through Amazon and all I can do is open it in the browser. The whole point for me of having ebooks is to be able to read them anywhere when I have time to read. Amazon wont let me have this book offline. Ergo I cant read it when I m on the bus. So yeah. Alan (and amazon) if you read this, a pdf download option after buying the book would be nice. Dont tell me about kindles please. This is a programming book. IT MAKES SENSE THAT I WANT TO USE IT ON MY WINDOWS MACHINE THAT CAN ACTUALLY PROGRAM BOOTSTRAP SITES!! I'm not programming on a f* kindle.PS: Alans content is great though. No hate there.
