I rated it 3 stars because the plot is interesting and unique, and the writing itself is very good. I have read some books with great stories, but the writing is just poor. This book does not share that problem and it is very well written.The reason I knocked off a star is because I wish I had more of the actual plot instead of just constantly focusing on the romance. The other concepts are so interesting I wish the author would explore those more. I understand their romance is at the center of it all, but jeez we get it they love each other can we discuss any of the other million things going on for just a moment? Maybe that's just personal preference, though.Also, it feels like Diana is constantly a damsel in distress and it is frustrating that even when she finally starts using her powers, she still needs a man to save her. And when her aunts are trying to help, the only person who actually helps her at all is a vampire and a man that she only just met, and it seems like a slap in the face to her aunts. I realize Diana has overwhelming power that is difficult for her aunts to teach, but Matthew isn't even a witch and he can help her.I was torn between 3 and 4 stars because I really did enjoy the book. The alchemy and the feuding of all the creatures is interesting, I want to know what happens, but Diana is so subservient and always needs a man to rescue her it is just annoying, and Matthew is just an ass.I really want to know what happens because the story and the writing are both great, but their relationship just dominates everything and it gets monotonous and they both annoy me, so for that reason I do not think I will read the next book. HOWEVER, if your preference is extra sappy love stories with plot on the side, this is for you. I don't say that as an insult because that is the type of book a lot of people like and maybe that's what this is supposed to be, but I was just looking for something else.

Diana, a witch who avoids using magic, is studying alchemical history when she finds an old book covered in magic; she returns the book to the library archives, but witches, vampires, and daemons are all hunting it, some bringing danger for Diana, and others -- especially ancient vampire Matthew -- providing protection and love.(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)Plot and Setting: 4.6 -- Plot is engaging from start to finish. Has many unique elements, no major holes, and a sense of focus. Major plot points are dropped or not resolved (cliffhanger). Setting is clear and believable. Timeline is clear and consistent. This is an incredibly detailed world, with interesting creatures, complex politics, and complicated family dynamics, all mixed in with elements of the mundane, ordinary world. There's terror and romance, adventure and personal revelations. It's complicated, and it doesn't resolve, leading directly into the next book, but it is wonderful. And it is clearly a well-planned story, since it is possible to track the days as they pass, from September 18 to October 31.Characters: 5 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. Even minor characters have depth, as do the relationships between characters. We meet many, many characters, with their own stories, personalities, creature attributes, and motivations (both benevolent and evil). They are all incredibly well imagined and outlined. Diana's struggle to accept her magic ability, and all that comes with it, makes her very relatable, and I enjoyed her relationships with Matthew, Sarah and Emily, Ysabeau and Marthe, and all her other friends and acquaintances.Mechanics and Writing: 5 -- Few, if any, typos, punctuation issues, or word errors. (<3/100pgs) Intelligent use of POV. Skillful writing that adds to the story. Errors include: compound word and/or homophone confusion, mild punctuation or formatting issues. POV is mainly 1st-person Diana, with some scenes (all or almost all when Diana is not present to narrate) in a sort of universal 3rd-person narrative, dipping into the thoughts of whoever is needed to tell the important details.Redeeming Value: 3.6 -- Partially focused uplifting themes or lessons. Drugs, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, though there is some shaky ground. A few borderline explicit sex scenes. Implied moral guidelines for behavior. No actual sex, though there's lots of kissing and intimate acts of 'bundling' between Diana and Matthew, and other sexual relationships are mentioned. A good deal of violence, which grows bloody and/or deadly more than once. Wine is a big deal, but it's enjoyed responsibly. Vampire politics and morality are apparently different from the human versions, falling more into the medieval, or even bestial. Some witches head that way, too. Lots of power plays, long grudges, etc.Personal Enjoyment: 5 -- I loved it. It made me feel in all the best ways, and leaves me content and satisfied. One I'll definitely read again.

So I don't really know how to really describe this book. A discovery of a witch started so promising by giving a strong, smart and self-sufficient female character in Diana Bishop. Yes Diana is not your typical witch/mortal or biped in love with a mesmerizing vampire that are usually found in romance novels. So I was having a ball reading and I even somewhat found Matthew domeering and old fashioned ways amusing at the start and I may admit even quite charming. And the mystery we are giving at the beginning is quite compelling that you truly want to know what going to happen with these two. Then the scenery change and the characters fall in love and God here comes the disaster. I was appalled by turn the novel took with Diana was slowly morphing into the damsel in distress that plague every others romance novel and Matthew domeering and diresgard of others opinion was not enticing to the naratif anymore. By the end of the novel I much wanting to throw it away because I was left confused and irrated with thousands of questions but no desire to pick up the sequel.But because I do value my own sanity and do not feel the needs to keep wondering about what happened next I will read the next book hopping the author doesn't simply tries to stuff our faces with obsucure snippet of historical facts.

Three stars because I finished it. Was not what it was hyped up to be...definitely not 5 stars in my opinion. Too many references to historical facts that contributed nothing to the story. A vampire/creature yoga class....palm to face. A vamp who knew or was friendly with almost every notable figure in history....mmmm k. The main female character was not the most likeable. She started off strong and interesting but became more flat and too dependent on her vampire guy as the story went on. Also, it was soo long. The whole book could have been edited better to make it less convoluted with unnecessary subject matter and therefore so much shorter. Maybe then it could have been a more interesting read....minus of course that corny yoga class.

Duntemann likes to give us all the background needed before we get into coding assembly. It's helpful, but it feels like he goes a little too over the top in giving us the foundation right off the bat. It takes him until the very end of Chapter 5 to start actually teaching assembly.I will say that all of the foundation he gives in the first 5 chapters is interesting and necessary (although maybe not right off the bat). Reading this book after taking an assembly / computer organization class in college, I can say that this book provides nearly the same information, only more clearly, for a much cheaper price. His writing is easy to understand and follow along with, but sometimes he gets too far off on his metaphors (in the first few chapters) to the point where you're actually just focusing on trying to learn his metaphors rather than the real information he's trying to convey. One such example is his "Alien Bases" Chapter 2, where he is trying to compare base number systems to martian counting with unintelligible symbols and less fingers on their hands than us. It's a good metaphor, but it's taken too far.I recommend this book to someone who is willing to learn assembly from the ground up, and wants to understand all of the inter-workings of the computer and how it processes the assembly that you will be writing. However, if you want to learn the assembly instructions themselves, I would recommend that you get at least one more supplemental book on Assembly Language, that is more specific to that purpose, to read after the completion of this book. This book is not the quick and easy way to learn assembly, but it IS the right way to start out.

If you truly want to learn assembler you HAVE to learn memory addressing and this book will absolutely teach you that. After you have read, studied, experimented and understand the main concept of memory addressing (base + index), etc in assembler everything else becomes so much easier. THIS book will definitely get you well on your way. I think it should be a first book in anyone's learning arsenal. Then you can move onto other, more advanced books. Keep in mind the author uses Ubuntu Linux with NASM but similar enough to MASM in Visual Studio in my opinion.

Still relevant after all this time and pertinent for anyone learning Intel 32-bit architecture specific assembler. Code examples (primarily the labs) can appear campy at times, but deliver appropriately being concerned with progressive, modular design philosophies. Additionally, Duntemann sticks to the assembler ideologies of module development rather than using abstraction/poly-morphism (with proprietary libraries) allowing the reader an opportunity to learn rather than decipher subject matter. Globally, the content is on point and covers much ground addressing issues that every assembler developer will immediately face whether developing low-level or optimizing high-level libraries.Based on numerous factors and an established curve, regarding the sparse nature of content on the subject, feel the five star rating deserved.

This is a GREAT book for learning Assembly Language. If you really want to get down to the metal so to speak this is the right book. For someone who likes to know how computer programming works Assembly Language is a must. I don't have a technical background so I needed to learn from the ground up with some hand holding along the way. In my personal opinion learning Assembly before learning higher level languages makes sense. The higher level languages do so much for you that although they allow you do do more with less work they hide what is happening behind the scenes. If you know the Assembly then you know what's happening at a lower level when you create loops, arrays, strings, etc. The higher level languages will then make more sense and seem more intuitive. I've been trying to learn C as well and this book is a great complement to a book on C. If you're an aspiring hacker you'll find yourself breaking down code in a debugger so understanding registers, assembly instructions, and memory layout is a must. This book provides a solid foundation covering binary, hex, memory layout, registers, flags, system calls, the stack & the heap, how the assembler works, op codes, branching, jumps, linking, and more. If you like to learn then give this book a shot.

I ordered the latest edition even though I don't particularly need to learn at the level Duntemann is teaching. I enjoy his writing and wanted to see how he updated the book to deal with LINUX and modern x86 assembly language. As per usual it's well written. If I ever write a tutorial book I will reread this to remind myself how it should be done.The only (minor) negative observations I have are:1) The book only addresses 32 bit programming in detail, but 32 bit programs will run in 64 bit without change.2) Duntemann dives into open source software and teaches/recommends a particular debugger that is no longer being developed. Most of the commands will map to other debuggers (it's all GDB underneath) but this weakens an otherwise excellent book.Highly recommended if you want to learn assembly language on LINUX.

This seems to be a good, quick guide to bullet journaling. The author jumps right in. This was the first book I had read about bullet journaling, and I feel like I have a good understanding. However, there were enough typos and grammatical errors that some parts needed an occasional pause or re-read. Also, when discussing the various methods (Carroll, Alastair, Calendex) there were no images to illustrate these concepts. I found myself still having to pause and go to Google.Recommended for a quick guide.

I first heard of bullet journal from a friend. The way she explained it made it sound so complicated that i thought it wasn't for me. Luckily i came across this book and thought i should give it a try. This book has helped me start my first ever bullet journal. I like the way the concept was broken down and made simple to understand. What i like most with the journal is how it helps me out my thoughts in perspective. Great read indeed.

I have been looking for this type of guide, and finally got it. Minimalist bullet journal is an eye opening guide, that helps me to improve myself and teach me how to maintain the lifestyle too. Just a heads up to those bullet journalers out there the dots are quite far apart so there are less on the page. It works well for me and my needs, but in case you like them closer together.

I usually get so busy and stressed out each day. I operate a local restaurant and boy some days can be so physically and mentally tasking.... especially mentally. Started keeping a bullet journal and though the stress hasn't magically vanished, I feel more light headed and focused any day I use the journal. The trick I use is "if it isn't in my journal, I don't do it". Having this mentality I have increased focused to a great extent. Thanks for the perfect guide in this book

The minimalist approach of this book to bullet journalling is simply amazing. I'm not so artistic and most times find it hard to come up with a decent design element. Overall I enjoyed the book and found her life fascinating. There is some advanced technical science in it, but it's about a scientist's life, so I expected that. Some of it went over my head, I just scanned it and kept reading. It didn't disrupt the flow of the story. I'm passing this book to my niece, Kia. She is wicked smart and will understand the whole book.I felt Catherine Brady did an excellent job of portraying Elizabeth Blackburn as a whole person and describing how she overcame so many challenges in life. I would recommend this book to other people.

I thought that this was one of the most interesting biographies I've read. Not only does it explain in detail the remarkable scientific progress and discoveries made by Dr. Blackburn, but also her personal and professional evolution. Dr. Blackburn had a free ranging childhood in Tazmania - with unfettered freedom to explore nature and experiment - rare for little girls any where in the world, and particularly fascinating on an island with unique species, topography, and nature. Many of her teachers and mentors recognized her talent and encouraged her, as did her father who was a doctor though he was plagued by alcoholism. She managed to study science even when science was not offered in school. She persevered our of sheer curiosity and passion no matter what the obstacles were - and always some unusual teacher or helpful scholarship committee spotted her as gifted and managed to find a way for her to bloom.Most books about women scientists treat them as walking dogs - but this one avoids political postering about feminism and explains Blackburn development as a result of her passion for lab work and finding answers. As an undergraduate, she sees herself as a Lab Rat not an exceptional student. Admirably, there is no emphasis on her challenges as a female until she finishes her undergraduate degree in England and goes to Yale University, where she first encounters blatent gender discrimination. Even then, she takes great pains never to complain about being treated differently from male researches, wary of being labeled a trouble-maker - and simply seeks venues where she can do her work. First and foremost, she is an avid scientist, never a wronged woman (despite the fact that she knew she was being discriminated against in pay, grants, and lab space - especially at UC Berkeley).Realizing that she could not longer get the funds of support for further research at UC Berkeley she accepted a generous offer at the newly emerging biogenetic research campus of the University of California at San Francisco at Mission Bay. At last, she finally had the funds and lab space to complete her remarkable discoveries about telomers and telomerase - the secret to aging, fighting cancer - and understand how DNA eventually unravels in all species. I found the biography superior to any other I've read about male or female scientists in explaining how Elizabeth Blackburn became a stellar scientist. I ordered the book after hearing Dr. Blackburn speak at Mission Bay. I was so impressed by her discoveries and charmed by her warmth that I wanted to learn more about her - before she received the Nobel. I told friends with me at the presentation that I thought she should receive a Nobel - and two years later was thrilled when she did.Many people to whom I've given the book have been frustrated by the technical explanations of how DNA works. I'm an architect who studied some science as an undergraduate. I found the explanations clear and exciting. Readers who cannot understand the science in this book would do well to read Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle, and a good biography of James Watson, the discoverer of DNA. It is sad that the level of scientific knowledge, even among otherwise very well educated Americans, is appallingly limited.

I found this one of those books that one could do without. Not informative, not captivating, just boring. I would not suggest it to anyone

This book was a disappointment. The subject should be interesting, but the presentation was poor. The author explains almost none of the science. She gives entire sentences of technical terms without definition or simplification. Perhaps this is because she is a professor of creative writing, not a scientist or science writer. Or perhaps her main interests are Blackburn's struggles with male chauvinism and right wing politics. Anyway, the result is a scientific biography in which the science is almost incomprehensible.
