...and I got none. It was an intriguing concept, but I never got any concrete answers. Just my opinion, I think Sarah was schizophrenic. That would explain why she saw multiple versions of herself, and why her family seemed to interact with them, not finding it too weird. She had a breakdown (internally) after Mexico, and the mental issues she was already exhibiting signs of (i.e. talking to the fish), just escalated from there. I just wish I had a little more continuation and explanation.

Crafted with the author's usual brilliance when it comes to capturing complex characters in simple, elegant strokes. The parallels drawn between the main character's past, present and future selves adds a depth to a haunting subject that many readers will relate to--the problems that arise when love is coupled with fear. A quick read and worth every penny.

This book is stunning. I don't always understand AS King's work, but I always admire it. She's so fearless. This is my favorite of her books so far.

I love A.S. King and this book just proves why.The way that she writes about her teenage characters is so vivid and true. It gives teenage life a realistic perspective which is hard to capture. We follow our MC 16y.o. Sarah as she tells her story in a stream of consciousness style, exploring her past, what is means to be present, and glimpses to her future. We unsurface secrets with her, face harsh realities about domestic abuse, and we find out what a purpose in life means and how we find it.Basically, this book is like a tornado itself. We are introduced to so many threads, but they all interrelate, make sense and come together beautifully as a story. A.S. King keeps her surrealist vibe and fresh voice in her latest book and I read the whole thing so incredibly fast. The whole way though I wanted to stop and savor it, but it was just too good. So many times I read a line or a thought that resonated with me so deeply. I am in love with how this book made me feel and what it is trying to say.Excellent, excellent story.[...]

A book for all ages wonderful and healing. For anyone looking for answers, looking for meaning, looking for art. It is a journey we all have taken or will take. A great read for anyone who is feeling stuck. Still Life with Tornado will help to melt away the glue. I had wanted my daughter, 14, to read the book, but I read it first, so glad I did.

#251,660 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

If you grew up with mean or distant parents, or have experience within the often crazy situations inside a family business... I can tell you with all confidence that you ain't seen nothin' yet. The abuse, cruelty and psychotic behavior displayed by the parents and grandparents of the author of this gritty memoir went so far beyond my own ideas of dysfunction, that it was almost physically uncomfortable to read it. The first couple of chapters were so grueling that at first, I thought the book was some kind of well-deserved retribution. Pay back. But that's not it at all. It is the well researched story of the melt-down of a successful multi-generational family business at the hands of truly crazy people. Crazy like evil foxes, that is. That the author survived the ordeal of his childhood and young adulthood became an amazing force, driving me through the results he uncovered once he began asking questions. Mr. Gifford's writing is immediate, intimate and connected with me very early on. Not being familiar with the Washington DC-Area was a blessing for me, as I had no preconceptions regarding the well-known, notorious family business he writes about. While the first two-thirds of the book concentrates more on the effects of the pervasive family madness upon a young boy and teen; eventually, once he delves into the nitty-gritty and soiled laundry of the collapse of the Gifford's Ice Cream brand, the mechanics of how this all happened are as startling as the behavior of the principals. The reality of what occurred, who lost their investments, who tried to disappear, who was connected to all kinds of back-alley characters, etc. has been documented over the years in the media, but this carefully researched memoir goes beneath even the dusty surfaces into a realm of mislaid cash, rot and filth that I can barely describe. If you have the stomach for it, you must read this book. But be warned. If you have happy memories of eating Gifford's Ice Cream in one of their colossal parlors as a child. It might crush your nostalgia completely.

I agree with many of the reviews here. I also found that I could not put this book down. Now, some two weeks later, I am still reflecting on what I read. Andrew has succeeded in displaying superb writing skills that made me feel as though I was almost actually there watching him endure his many struggles within the dysfunctional Gifford family. As a child in the 1950's, I regularly enjoyed Gifford's ice cream. As a former Gifford's employee in the 1960's, I knew a good bit about what was going on behind the scenes at Gifford's, but I wasn't clear about why the Gifford family ran such a good business into the ground. Gifford's demise began before Bob was in charge. He apparently just accelerated the process for reasons different than his mother, Mary Frances. I recommend this book to anyone who knew about Gifford's ice cream as well as to others who might enjoy reading about how a multi-million dollar business with outstanding products any a large and loyal customer base could deteriorate and virtually disappear along with its owner. However, I do warn readers that, while it is a credit to Andrew to have been able to reveal so much about his difficult life, you may find his story to be unbearably dark and tragic.

The more I think about this book, the more I realize how much of it is just made out of whole cloth.I grew up in DC - my brother in law and his siblings and cousins went to BCC & Our Lady of Lourdes at the same time Andrew was there. My cousins grew up in Silver Spring. And while parts of this book are true and can be verified, there are parts that require you not just to suspend disbelief but shoot and leave it in a dumpster. The parts that are most believable unfortunately are the abuse stories but when I realize how much of the rest of it rings untrue, I began to doubt even those. So yes, there's a local chain of ice cream stores called Giffords which a lot of people in the DC suburbs adored. Yes, his father didn't just embezzle and defraud a lot of people but he killed the chain. But you have to assume that people would continue to work there with rats inside of the food prep area and not just walk out the door and take a bus downtown or cross town and get a better job. You have to assume that all of these middle class and upper middle class kids who got a job there didn't tell their parents and their parents didn't then call the Health Department. This is Montgomery County - everybody knew someone's dad who was a lawyer or worked for the Post or the Gazette or even in the federal government. Health Department shut down restaurants in Silver Spring all the freaking time in the 1980s.Then you have to believe that a nun excommunicated him. Well, 1. that's not how excommunication works 2. even if she were crazy, that's not how nuns work (try "I talk to God every night and I'm going to tell him to smite you.") and last, Lourdes is one of the richest parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington but that doesn't mean every other Catholic school would go along with it. Trust me on this. I know people who did far worse things than get lost on a school trip and not only were they not "excommunicated" they weren't even expelled from school. And some of those people went to Lourdes during this time. And a priest is not going to close the doors on a teenager because a nun told him too. Then let's talk about how a guy who says he has no money and has a debilitating disease which no one can diagnose has health insurance without steady work. Because Ben Carson wasn't doing surgeries for free in the early 2000s.The abuse rings true - but frankly so many other things don't that I feel this is more a teenager making stuff up to shock the adults.

I never tasted Gifford's ice-cream, iconic in the DMV (District, Maryland and Virginia), though after reading this gripping memoir, I'm glad I didn't. A tale of Gifford's, a local ice cream empire, and its rise and fall, amid mental illness, roaches and rats and rivalries, this is a riveting read from the grandson of the founder. If you like memoirs like Rich Cohen's SWEET AND LOW about his grandparents and their pink-wrapped artificial sweetener, read WE ALL SCREAM. If you like twisted family stories (money stolen and hidden, lies, lies and more lies), indulge in WE ALL SCREAM.
