About 5 years ago, I started using Go both at work and on personal projects. Concurrently, I've been helping new and experienced developers learn Ruby (for many more years) at local meetups in my area. Many of those same programmers have been starting to get interested in Go, yet there have been only a few tutorial level books and guides out there. I've collected them all and when I heard about this book, I was very interested in helping to get it out to the public. I volunteered to do a technical proof reading of the book and over the course of reading it, knew I found a resource I could share with other students of Go.The book is structured in a well paced, incremental manner. The first few chapters cover syntax, the type system, and writing functions and methods. Go's built-in collection types (array, slice, and maps) are covered next. All of this gives you a solid foundation of the strongly typed, statically compiled language. For my fellow Rubyists that I've been teaching Go, this is a fairly big change.The later three units get into the parts of Go that really define what being a productive Gopher is all about. First is thinking in terms of composition and interface, which is a different pattern for those used to thinking OOP is only about classes and inheritance. Go's approach to error handling (no exceptions) and concept of nil is explored next. The book's final chapter introduces you to my favorite part of the language, its concurrent programming support. Goroutines and channels are explored and the unit's lessons start to give you a taste of what you can do with them.Each chapter provides sample code (also available online) for you to get right in and play with. Most of it works in the Go playground online, though I recommend installing Go on your Windows, Mac, or Linux machine and trying things there. There are larger projects at the end of each unit to really help you pull together the concepts.Overall, this is the book I now recommend to my fellow learners to start their Go journey. There are a number of other good books, videos, and other online materials that cover the intermediate and advanced levels of Go, and you'd be prepared for those after reading this book.

If I had to summarize Get Programming with Go, I would do so by saying that it accomplishes the incredibly challenging task of providing enough detail and background to be beginner friendly, while also avoiding so much detail and monotony that it is tedious and boring for an expert. Regardless of your background, this book is a great resource for learning Go.In addition to being approachable and well paced, the book is designed to be very hands-on. Not only are there tons of examples to read, code yourself, and learn from, but there are also many additional experiments and capstones to help practice what you are learning.Experiments tend to be small changes you need to make to examples in order to create similar, but different output. Their value lies in their ability to help solidify your understanding of the current lesson, as you have to figure out what specific lines of code need changed in order to produce the desired output. When I was first learning to program this type of tinkering is what really helped me start to understand new code, so I really appreciate the authors attention to this detail.Capstones are a little more complex than experiments; instead of taking a program that illustrates a specific lesson and altering it, these show up every few lessons and require you to apply all the knowledge you have gained up until that point. As a beginner these capstones may feel challenging at first, but by working through them you end up knowing with absolute confidence that you understood the material and are ready to move on to the next set of lessons.All in all I think this is a great book with a practical, hands-on approach to learning Go and I will be recommending it to others in the future.

The author has a great writing style. He points out features of go that were not highlighted in other books I have read. The author teaches you the lesson, has instructive examples and then experimental code projects to do to aid in your learning. I am really enjoying the book and I am pretty picky on how books are formatted, as well as, how the message gets presented. Overall great book, can't say enough about it. A definite go to if your getting started in Go or just want to pick up some things that nobody else mentioned.

This book was really awesome! I am a young, beginner jazz enthusiast so I started with the King of jazz and worked my way around. I made a great choice. Not only does Miles give a great account of his music, but also recollects other notable musicians in the process. Which makes it worth wild to study their music further too. I thought this book was going to read like a memoir, you know very tight and numerical and mostly personal, and I was wrong. But its in a good way Davis moves from person to person, place to place and it keeps readers (at least me) on their heels. The first thing I ever heard about Miles Davis (way before I discovered his music) was that he was mean, disrespectful, and cold. Miles confirms these personality traits but he also justifies them in an odd but believable way. He made me understand why he grew so cold and by the end of the book (the last few pages I'm on now) he makes me sympathize with him.I have read many reviews about the book and most are correct. He is bold in this book, holds no punches, tells no colorful stories (I still can't get the taxi cab story with Bird out of my head), and he remains upfront and personal throughout the read. Some say he is simply racist, contradictory, and hateful toward his musical peers, but those people fail to understand the story of black folk. The whole of this nation and the western world is one big contradiction and I think, indirectly, Davis displays this fact through his references to events and stuff in his life. And as for disrespecting other legends, he doesn't do this in a way that demonizes them. He gives Bird the worst time (second to maybe Coltrane or Monk) but at the same time he explains how he worshiped the jazz god. For the most part, everything Davis explains is true about the story of our people and our music and lifestyle. If you don't like it, you may find that you are apart of the problem, black or white. This book isn't a literacy masterpiece but I truly believe Davis put his feelings into this good read and that makes it a must read for music lovers.One final note about the read of the book: I like how Davis gives readers insight on how jazz slowly dies through progression of music and the emergence of Funk and "White Rock" and "Hillbilly music". He explains how the music (jazz) becomes white washed and another stolen item from the black experience. He also gives a great account of his own progression through the years of bebop, ballad, "cool", fusion, and free jazz forms. This book is cool, hip, and truthful.On the shape of the book: Seller described it as in good shape but a bit worn and it was. There was now notes or marks inside and that made me very happy. Came before it was scheduled to, but who complains about stuff like that? Not me!

Miles Davis brings in this book what he brings in his trumpet playing: a unique, totally fascinating voice. Read this passage: "After [Cannonball]'d been with us a while and then after Trane came back, the sound of the band just kept getting thicker and thicker, almost like when a woman uses too much makeup ... Trane would play some weird, great s***, and Cannonball would take it in the other direction, and I would put my sound right down the middle or float over it, or whatever ... And then Paul's anchoring all this creative tension between the horns, and Red's laying down his light, hip s***, and Philly Joe pushing everything with that hip s*** he was playing and then sending us all off again with the hip-de-dip, slick rim shots that were so bad, them 'Philly licks.' Man, that was too hip and bad" (222). Besides the music, Miles opens up about his failed marriages, heroin addiction, various encounters with the police, and a whole lot of other stuff as well. He has a lot of really weird beliefs: "I'm a number six in numerology, a perfect six, and six is the number of the Devil. I think I have a lot of the devil in me" (136). And with Spotify, you can find all the music he references very easily. I highly recommend this work.

This book is intense. You really feel that you get an insider's view of Miles' life, unedited and unabridged. There is a great deal of interesting stories about the best jazz musicians, but also rich stories of Miles' personal life that are very raw and unapologetic.The author, Quincy Troupe, does an amazing job conjuring Miles' voice and giving it life on the page. This is one of the best books about music history that you can possibly buy, and perhaps on of the best autobiographies as well. Superb!

Finally I got this booK!!!!I had been waiting for the book. Finally, it arrived and I could not put it down. However, this book is not for the faint hearted!!! The book has language, very raw, and personal descriptions of some very famous people that is explicit. Miles Davis was not only an outstanding musician, but a vivid observer of lives and living as well. The book is filled with interesting, powerful and intimate story, and solid information about Jazz and music. Sometimes, most times, the sharing, the tales, are redundant, verbose, the same story retold in several chapters.( The book could have used some good editing.) but that dose not take away from the interesting and informative reading.

I knew Miles Davis.I am also from the midwest. I appreciated the author's rendering of the story which smacked of deep truths about growing up and living in the midwestern part of the country, in an America deeply steeped in White racism...and the bridge to New York as Miles stretched out musically to become a Master in his legacy of influence in the music and music industry. Miles Davis is dead...long live Miles Davis.

I should preface this review by stating that I own every Charlotte Mason book on the market today, including her original six volumes. Aside from her own words in those writings, I consider this the most helpful book I own when it comes to actually implementing her methods. Honestly, I hesitated to buy this book for quite a while because the editorial review wasn't especially glowing and there weren't many reader reviews describing its incredible attributes. At any rate, I figured I should keep my collection complete, so I bought it to see what it had to offer. I am extremely pleasantly surprised by its content.The beauty of this book is that it was collectively written by educators who are involved with modern Charlotte Mason schools. Unbeknownst to many of the homeschooling folks who are drawn to her philosophy and methods (myself included), there are actually real brick and mortar CM schools currently in the United States. Because of the nature of the authors' experience, this book is full of practical information! The funny thing is that I wouldn't necessarily describe it as the most inspirational Charlotte Mason book I own. For the Children's Sake and A Charlotte Mason Companion are actually vying for that role. Those two books sure do give you a warm fuzzy for CM. The problem for me, personally, has been moving from the warm fuzzy to my practical homeschooling in 2008.I have spent more hours than I would like to admit reading homeschool philosophy and perusing Charlotte Mason web sites. The problem that gnawed at me until I read this book, however, was the feeling that CM lovers of today were hearkening back to Victorian times a bit too much for my liking. A great deal of discussion goes into what CM would have liked and what she would not have liked--audio books, computers, the internet, digital cameras for nature study, Story of the World, Hakim's History of US series. Well, the bottom line is that we can't decisively answer those questions. So, you find that many current CM homeschoolers bend over backwards to find books used in the old CM schools because they know those titles met her standards. They search for out of print titles, read many public domain books online, and generally have a belief that older means better. This particular issue is where I found the greatest value of this book.From page 30: "People like Charlotte Mason are rare and vital. They contribute both stability and continuity as they maintain the clear infrastructure of truth in their work; yet life bubbles up in them with freshness. Their response to actual life and persons creates a relevance and newness to their work without sacrificing the roots. This approach contrasts with a more usual trend toward a deadening legalism that squeezes out new ideas. She pointed out the limitations of a set curriculum plan as well as its value. Every year new books are published, and they need to be considered."From page 37: "The schools and classes that used the old PNEU programs used to await the yearly program with interest and enthusiasm. Old favorites and classic books from our heritage are included from year to year. But then a Baden-Powell writes a scouting book, and that opens new avenues. A new book on planets, engines, or medieval castles arrives and is chosen."WOW! Finally, freedom from the guilt of thinking that mixing up the classics with some new books is not only acceptable but what CM did. Finally, I can stop looking for the "perfect" CM curriculum and give myself more credit and permission to create a CM style curriculum that is perfect for my children. The fact is, from those using the actual books that she used in her time to those using a combination of those classics and some newer material, I doubt anyone is using the exact combination of materials that she would be using if she were alive today. Her curriculum was living, just like the books she chose, and no one can presume to know what specific choices she would make if alive today.The greatest point I take from this book is that a Charlotte Mason education is not about exact book titles. It is about a specific way of viewing children and education mixed in with some phenomenal and proven methods of learning. Surely, it is about saying no to twaddle and yes to classics and well-written living books. However, after subscribing to many CM Yahoo groups and perusing every CM web site available, this book was a breath of fresh air, inspiring me to realize that I can have a CM homeschool while making my own choices about particular books. I won't accept anything dumbed-down but I will keep current without feeling like I'm getting it wrong. The funny thing is that in looking through all my other CM books again after reading this one, I see that the same point was made in all--that a CM education isn't just about specific books. However, in this book it is a major point, where in the others it was minor enough for me to have glanced right over it without really stopping to ponder that reality.The foundation that CM provides is spot on and her techniques will never age. History and science, however, do age. History titles, in particular, offer a challenge when we consider the extremely negative stereotypes of certain ethnic groups that are the norm in older literature. Science and technology have made leaps and bounds since CM's day and education needs to keep in step with those changes.I heartily recommend this book. Aside from what I've already mentioned, the descriptions of her philosophy and techniques are some of the best I've seen. Additionally, specifics about curriculum scope and schedules are given. I'm also particularly fond of Jack Beckman's discussion of history, which puts the subject at the forefront of "the science of relations." (A scope is laid out for grades 1-8 which is very useful.) On page 164, I found some of his most useful words about the study of history."...history became for us the unifying 'discipline of choice' due to our belief that all aspects of life fit under its broad sweep....as the student ponders the Renaissance, she will be challenged by the works of Donatello and Titian (art), the thoughts of da Vinci (science, medicine, technology), and the words of Petrarch (poetry). Thus, we employed a learning methodology that was history-driven and thematic in nature."Again, these are modern day educators who work in CM schools in the United States, doing their best to interpret her philosophy and maintain her high standards. This book has been an amazing gift to me as I try to do the same in my homeschool. The book has given me more confidence and helps me feel a freedom that I didn't get from every other CM book I have read. I feel guilt-free searching Amazon for modern treasures. I feel fine about doing some inquiry science with my young elementary kids. We'll be spending an entire day, every week, deep in the woods of our nearby state park, listening to classic literature on my iPod on the way there and back. We'll be narrating classic stories as well as more recent living books. We'll be enjoying classical music and jazz, fine art (including modern), and poetry with tea every afternoon. We will use computer software to help us learn Spanish. We will have short lessons. We will have a Charlotte Mason inspired school in these modern times.

This book claims to be a practical application of Charlotte Mason's ideas, but it seems instead to be a lot of (albeit poetic) philosophizing. You will not find book lists, discipline plans, or practical teacher to teacher advice. This book left me thinking a Charlotte Mason school sounds very nice in theory, but I have little more notion of how to implement it as a teacher than I did before reading this book.

This book captures the essence of Charlotte Mason's rather rigorous advice in a condensed practical overview. I would love to see Elaine Cooper et al expand the work so it can become as easy to grab a guide as The Well Trained Mind. It has that potential. Just doesn't seem fully realized.

Although this book is designed for the classroom, it very nicely summarizes what the Charlotte Mason method of education is and what it's not, making it a necessary resource for the home educator. It goes to the heart of the subjects and how to implement them. It provides an outline and a structure for you to base your school upon if you so wish. The book is written by various experts on the Charlotte Mason method, providing fresh perspectives throughout. There are short chapters on History, Spelling, Poetry, Math, Foreign Languages, Science and Nature Studies and all the major subjects. The extensive explanation of narration is essential. Susan Shaeffer McCaulay also contributed to this book. I highly recommend this book to anybody interested to know more about the Charlotte Mason method and those wanting to implement her method at home or in the classroom. Together with Charlotte Mason's books and Karen Andreola's A Charlotte Mason Companion, When Children Love to Learn completes an unbeatable combination for the Charlotte Mason homeschooler.

Excellent resource for helping me to better understand Miss Masonâ€™s philosophy and methods for education. It has multiple applications for a school and/or home school setting.

Very good information and more direct examples of how to apply the principles in real life than other Charlotte Mason books I've read but you really have to dig for what you get. No bulleted points, or lists of example activities for different age groups. Overall, worth the money and time to find what you're looking for.

This is a very interesting book with good pictures. Lots of good history, but I would like to see the notes that did not make it into the book as it appears there are some sad gaps. I think this is an excellent resource book for older techniques of making and using textiles especially from an ethnic point of view.

I read the other two books (In the Shadow of Sinai and By the Waters of Kadesh) almost four years ago, so many of the previous booksâ€™ details were foggy. Iâ€™m happy to say I had no difficulties following this story. It works as a stand-alone or as the third in this well-written series.Though the main characters, Zadok and Arisha, are fictional, the ever-building tension in the story and the coupleâ€™s life is all too real, offering the reader many, â€œHmmmm, I never thought of thatâ€ moments. Carole does a phenomenal job of placing us in Israelite sandals and tents thirty-nine years after the Exodusâ€”sandals that arenâ€™t worn and tents that arenâ€™t frayed or faded by the wilderness wind, sand, and sun. And what about the emotional tug-of-war felt by every Israelite as they waited for the last of the unbelieving generation to dieâ€”the last father, brother, or grandfather to draw his last breath so the rest could begin battling for Godâ€™s Promised Land? It was both a personal story, and the story of Godâ€™s nation. Beautifully done.I would have given this story 4 1/2 stars if that were available for two reasons. The many typos were unfortunate and distracting to the flow of the story. Second, I would have liked to see Scriptures referenced either in the book itself as a forward, at beginning of chapters, or in an authorâ€™s note to refer the reader back to the Bible. Because this bookâ€”like every great biblical historical fictionâ€”makes me want to go back and read this part of Scripture to see how this artful author has woven together fact with fiction!One, final comment about Caroleâ€™s work in general. She, like most of the biblical fiction authors I follow, is an over-achiever when it comes to research. I trust her factsâ€”even to the smallest detailsâ€”because I know her commitment to accuracy. This and the other reasons mentioned above is why I can heartily recommend The Walls of Arad and the previous two books in this series.

This was such a pleasure to read. It came at just the right time too. I was struggling with issues regarding this election and began feeling anxious for our lives and future. As I read, I started to listen to the Lord and He spoke through this story about fighting fear with faith in what He will do. One phrase stood out. It was " wait to see what Yahweh will do". These well chosen little words have filled my heart and mind with faith and joy taking root to bring a new harvest of hope for me in these very uncertain times in our nation. May Yahweh, our living Lord, bless and preserve us as we pray for His will to be done. I recommend this book to those who struggle as I do with doubts about the future. As Mrs. Towriss writes, " wait on God, He will never disappoint". May you be equally blessed as you sit quietly and enjoy this delightful story.

I began reading this series (Journey to Canaan) when Carole Towriss began writing the first of the three books, and this is the third--as one of the critiquers. I fell in love with her Characters first. Carole is one who obviously loves the research that has to go into any book, particularly historical fictions--and maybe even more particularly Biblical fiction. Biblical fiction MUST also agree with the Biblical account. Any good historical fiction MUST have its facts straight. Someone will catch the errors; count on it. And you will lose readers. She had to have really dug deep to find all the ins and outs of the time of the exodus. Kudos, Carole!Zadok is a simple man with a love for the sheep he cares for and a deep desire to never get involved with another woman; Marrah had soured him for life.Arisha is a young Canaanite woman who ran away from wicked masters. She hides near the Israelite encampment, gathering manna when no one is looking, but Miriam finds the young woman and brings her into her home. Arisha seldom ventures outside--many of the Israelites are cruel to her. They have only contempt for Canaanites.Miriam nears the end of her life, and well she knows it. Someone must care for Arisha, and gentle, patient Zadok is just the man for the job. She just has to convince him. And then convince Arisha. And soon.Meanwhile, not far away in the Canaanite city of Arad, King Keret worries about the Israelites. The forty-year hiatus is nearly over, and Keret wants to catch the Israelites and their God sleeping; otherwise, his city could be destroyed much the same as Egypt was. He wants to attack first.

Love it, love it. This is one review i do bot have to think about what to write i have always been fascinated with stories from the old testament. This story has certainly held my attention from beginning to end. God bless keep writing these stories

I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest review.The story of Zadok & Arisha is a beautiful story woven into the time of Israel's 40 year wait to enter Canaan. Re-live the death of Miriam, Aaron, and the conquest made od Arad. Learn more about how much Israel trusted God to bring them back to the land promised and to give them that which they needed for their daily lives.A story based on biblical truth.

As with the previous two installments, Carole Towriss does not disappoint! Her background research into period names, places, topography and practices is quite impressive, but are secondary to the emotion her writing elicits. The reader feels the loneliness of Arisha, the suppressed desire of Zadok to go to battle rather than tend sheep, the grief felt by the whole people of Israel at the deaths of Miriam and Aaron, and the fear of the captives in Arad: the reader is standing with them in each of those places. And, like any great serial author, Towriss's conclusion brings both the satisfaction of escape and the hunger that comes from knowing that there is much left to the story of Arisha, Zadok, and God's people. I eagerly await what's coming next!

In the very beginning introduction it basically says it's not a book for working with anyone that is psychologically a real jerk. I've read through it, it's good advice, but waiting on a book to actually deal with a psychopath.

I expected a bit more from the book. It's very mainstream and I do understand that every situation is unique, however it really just discussed how to treat a person that can be influenced by attitude not the ones that have narcissistic tendencies, which is what I was hoping for. If you just deal with someone with a bad attitude then this may just be the book for you. If you are dealing with an ex with personality disorders this might not be in depth enough. It wasn't for me.

The authors do a good job of providing ideas and self-reflection on how to work with a "jerk" former spouse. This may be good for 70% of people in divorces. I didn't give 5 stars because about 30% of parents who divorce, are in a high conflict divorce that from a spouse who has a mental illness.Long accepted research indicates that about 10% of the adult population has a narcissistic or borderline personality disorder, or both. I have empathy for these people, they did not ask to have a personality disorder, and they suffer from it. You can probably reflect on what you know about your ex-spouse's childhood and their current family relationships to recognize the possible causes for their disorder and validate that they have one.Since it is inherent with both disorders there is a lack of self-insight to recognize that there is something wrong with them, they never see a need to seek treatment - so they never great "better". With both disorders, they have an underlying core belief of personal inadequacy and anticipated abandonment - which scares them deeply and drives their insidious behavior with the children.Also unfortunate is that in a divorce situation, their personality disorder prevents them from any ability to recognize the that their child's own mental health will be severely damaged if the other parent is prevented from having a normal parenting role in their life - or worse, the child is manipulated to fear and hate the other parent. The narcissistic/borderline parent is driven by their own core fear and will do ANYTHING to prevent the child from having ANY relationship with the other parent, including lying to the child, lying to courts, and manipulating the child to hate the other parent. The common term for this is parental alienation. Search "parental alienation" on Amazon and you will see 250+ books. Many books focus on describing what parental alienation is and how that parent does it. I recommend 2 books that include the critical guidance on steps you can take to reduce / prevent parental alienation, they are by authors Amy J. L. Baker, PhD and Bill Eddy, LCSW, JD. and Joan Kloth-Zanard. Act quickly by getting educated and stopping the alienation before it gets to deeply ingrained in their highly susceptible brains. Your children need you to act right now to buy and read those books and/or research parental alienation online and on YouTube. You are likely exhausted by the challenges of divorce and money is tighter than ever, but the EFFORT and financial investments you make now (in a lawyer who specializes in parental alienation - they are rare, test them on their experience and knowledge), will save you huge money and heartache (for you and your kids) in the long run. Good luck.

Being in the midst of a contentious divorce with an angry spouse is hard, and dealing with unreasonable people can sometimes result in EVERYone being unreasonable and nothing getting solved. This book offers not only good advice but real-life solutions and strategies you can actually use and apply in/to ALL relationships to resolve conflicts. Fair warning - you may find out you, too, are being the jerk. The Problem Pyramid is FABULOUS. I read this book and "Putting Children First" as soon as I saw trouble on the horizon, and while both were useful, in my opinion this one struck the best balance.

Some of the examples seem silly, but then, some real life scenarios probably seem silly to outsiders as well. They do a good job of putting into perspective the importance (or lack) of issues and how to refocus your emotions. Not a titillating read, but a useful one if you are dealing with a high conflict co-parenting situation.

This book is amazing, I highly recommend this for anyone who has shared parenting with an uncooperative Jerk. This book came as a suggestion from the court during the implementation of our parenting plan. Its unfortunate that anyone would even need this book, but if your co parent adversary is a jerk like mine you can really learn a lot from this book.

Very good book about keeping your own mess clean. She emphasizes to recognize who's problem and only working to resolve your problems or the problems that directly relate to you.There is little to no legal advice in here, but it doesn't have skills to counteract the challenging people in our lives.

Pretty good but if you are dealing with a crazy person it's not as helpful. They should write one for dealing with people who intentionally do the wrong thing.

In â€œEpic Encounters: Culture, Media, and U.S. Interests in the Middle East, 1945-2000â€, Melani McAlister argues, â€œCultural products such as films or novels contributed to thinking about both values and history in two ways. First, they helped to make the Middle East an acceptable area for the exercise of American power. Second, they played a role in representing the Middle East as a stage for the production of American identities â€“ national, racial, and religiousâ€ (pg. 3). McAlister further argues, â€œAfter World War II, political and cultural conditions in the United States produced a post-Orientalist model of representing the Middle East for American audiences. These new representational dynamics were not always in the service of U.S. state power; in certain cases they explicitly contested the presumptions of official U.S. policies. But even the official rhetoric of nationalist expansionism worked to establish the United States as different from the old colonial powers, and it did so in part by fracturing the East-West binary on which traditional Orientalism had dependedâ€ (pg. 40). McAlister draws upon the theories of Edward Said while interjecting a greater focus on gender and race into traditional studies of foreign policy.Examining film, McAlister argues, â€œThe biblical epics [of the 1950s and 1960s] made representations of the religious history of the Middle East central to a discourse of U.S. â€˜benevolent supremacyâ€™ in world affairsâ€ and that â€œbiblical epics should be read not simply as antitotalitarian narratives but as anticolonial ones, situated at the moment when the United States took over from the European colonial nations the role of a preeminent world powerâ€ (pg. 46). In terms of race, â€œin the 1950s and 1960s, the conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors took on a new salience in African American cultural politics. In part, the energized significance of the Middle East had to do with decolonizationâ€ (pg. 85). In this way, â€œBetween 1955 and 1972, a potent combination of religious affiliation, anticolonial politics, and black nationalist radicalism turned claims upon the Middle East into a rich resource within African American communities. For both Christians and Muslims, religious culture made salient not only ancient histories, but also contemporary political events in the region, particularly the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Arabs for control over territoryâ€ (pg. 86).Looking to museum exhibits, McAlister writes, â€œExamining 'The Treasures of Tutankhamun' as a diverse set of representations, it suggests that newspaper and television news stories, T-shirts and trinkets, books and magazine articles, museum catalogs, and the exhibit itself created â€˜Tutâ€™ as a significant cultural phenomenon. The Tut phenomenon was striking for two reasons: first, for the intimate relationships it forged between the high-culture world of museum exhibits and the popular traffic in celebrity icons, and second, for the way it became a site of struggle over both the nature of American world power and the domestic politics of race and genderâ€ (pg. 125-126). Further, â€œTutâ€™s presence as a commercial sensation in the twentieth century linked him to commodity culture; like the department store Orientalism at the turn of the century, Tutâ€™s presence enabled the marketing of everyday consumer goods as exoticaâ€ (pg. 150).Moving to the late Cold War, McAlister writes, â€œIn the 1980sâ€¦the discourse of terrorist threat developed in new and important ways as public reactions to the Iran hostage crisis were staged in the speeches of policymakers, in television news reports, and in the activities of communities around the country. These accounts brought Americans, rather than Israelis, into the primary position as victims of â€“ and eventually fighters against â€“ terrorismâ€ (pg. 199). She continues, â€œAs the discourse of terrorist threat developed, during the Iran crisis and after, it helped to construct a subtle but crucial change in the imagined geography of the Middle East, a change that was marked by a reclassification: â€˜Islamâ€™ became highlighted as the dominant signifier of the region, rather than oil wealth, Arabs, or Christian Holy Landsâ€ (pg. 200).McAlister concludes, â€œIn the period after 1945, I have argued, there was a move away from the distinctly modern concern with the construction of a unified (white, masculine) national and racial identity toward a construction of the national subject as disjointed and diverse, gendered both masculine and feminine, and ultimately multiracialâ€ (pg. 270). Finally, â€œThe Middle East was mapped for Americans through the intersecting deployment of cultural interests and political investments. In constructing this history, [McAllister has] aimed to intervene in several ways in the current scholarship in cultural studies, American history, and colonial discourse studiesâ€ (pg. 270).

An incredibly good book. McAlister dissects and analyzes the representations of the Middle East in various media -- movies, news, plays, books, etc. -- and their relationships to the projection of US global power and the shaping of US cultural identity since the end of World War II. As she puts it, her goal is to address the absence of culture from discussions of the history of US imperialism, the absence of empire from discussions of US culture, and the absence of the US from discussions of postcolonial imperialism.Among her subjects, all of which she treats deftly and with attentive detail, are: Amiri Baraka's "A Black Mass," the Israeli military raid on Entebbe, the 1977 John Frankenheimer movie "Black Friday," the tour of King Tutankhamen's artifacts through the United States during 1977-1978, Hal Lindsey's "The Late Great Planet Earth," the rise of the Moral Majority, the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-1980 and its obsessive coverage in the US media, the prevalence of military revenge movies in the 1980s like "Navy Seals" and "Delta Force," Betty Mahmoody's book "Not without My Daughter," and the Gulf War.I found particularly compelling her discussion of 1950s biblical epics, such as "Ben-Hur" and "The Ten Commandments." The recent controversy over "The Passion of the Christ" is put into definite context when you see how "The Ten Commandments" was received (and what purposes it served) when it was released in 1956.

I chose this book to pair it with Natasha Zaretsky's book "No Way Home" for my final paper and it helped me to make the connection between how American Foriegn Policy is formed by way of the media and the American public interest in the Middle East Region. To learn more about how American policies are shaped regarding the Middle East region, I suggest that you read this book.

This book changed the way that the Middle East and Islam are analyzed in the field of American studies. Examining the intersections of national security and popular culture--for example, the Black Arts Movement and Hollywood films--Epic Encounters goes beyond Edward Said's classic Orientalism to reveal how U.S. engagements in the Middle East since the Cold War express multiple, sometimes conflicting interests. Its insights remain generative and fresh. It's a classic.
