"Spoiler alert:  Cancer as a Love Story is not just for people affected by cancer. Author Gail Kauranen Jones, a five-year survivor of breast cancer, takes on the center failure of western medicine:  the role of emotions in health and disease. Her heartfelt, brutally honest story takes the reader through her amazing journey of building new brain connections to enable healing through connection to community, nature, and the divine.  Her transformed mindset is focused on new possibilities and self-affirmation.  The book offers an abundance of tools, tips, resources, and lessons learned from both western and alternative approaches.  Gail points the way forward for anyone interested in a new American dream:  life, liberty and the pursuit of neuroplasticity."~Phyllis Strupp, brain training expert and award-winning author of The Richestof Fare and Better with Age:  The Ultimate Guide to Brain Training."Cancer as a Love Story contains a wealth of treasures for people wanting to explore the full spectrum of their healing options after a cancer diagnosis.  Gail Kauranen Jones shares straight-up her first-had experiences with modalities from conventional to the fringe, just as a friend might tell you about the good, the bad and the ugly of her experience.  Even more important, she delves into who we need to become in order to allow sustained healing to occur.  Curl up with a cup of hot tea and dive in!"~Dr. Shani Fox, ND, Healing and Hope for Cancer Survivors, drshanifox.com"A high-five to Gail Kauranen Jones for giving us the powerfully compelling chronicle of a wake-up call.  She tells like it is, without pulling her punches, and simultaneously makes it supremely informative, jams-packed with usable links and leads.  With grace and grit, she has used her illness for what all illnesses were designed for--to get our attention and reorient us--encouraging us to embrace not only the habits of optimal health, but perhaps the much harder human work of falling back in love with ourselves."--Gregg Levoy, author of Callings:  Finding and Following an Authentic Life and Vital Signs: The Nature and Nurture of Passion."Cancer as a Love Story is a very compassionate and educational book in which Gail Kauranen Jones provides the right combination of medical information and options for personal actions and techniques, all in nontechnical terms, and easily readable language.  Not to be missed are the 'tips' that she offers throughout the book.  Her book is a 'must read' for anyone with cancer, anyone who has a family member or a friend with cancer, and for healthcare providers.  It will change their lives.  Any reader will be inspired."--Dr. Ann Webster, health psychologist, professor and former director of The Mind Body for Program for Cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital."For too long breast cancer has been considered primarily 'a women's issue.'  Gail's story will inspire both men and women--especially men who dearly love a woman dealing with the tragic impact of hearing these four life-shattering words:  'You have breast cancer.'"--David Bradshaw, publisher, myideafactory.net.

From the Author
Cancer as a Love Story came as "a calling" in the middle of the night, after I initially vowed as a nationally recognized coach, writer and blogger to keep my cancer healing journey private.  Clearly there was a higher plan at work in my life, beyond what my will wanted.  The book's title popped into my head, and I jumped out of bed, and started writing for what seemed like nonstop for days.  I barely ate or showered, as the words kept pouring forth.Over the five-year period of completing this book I continued to hear new messages about teaching the power of love and a greater sense of worthiness to heal.  And when the calling at times felt too overwhelming, and I wanted to digress from the book, I would serendipitously meet the next person to guide me in shifting my mind, body or spirit in even more significant and profound ways.  My first book, To Hell and Back...Healing Your Way through Transition, which was published in 2004, helped readers deal with four major changes:  switching careers, becoming a mother, taking care of elderly parents, and coping the death of a loved one.Cancer as a love story:  Developing the mindset for living is much more comprehensive in teaching readers how to use the latest in neuroscience to train their minds to heal their bodies and produce other higher level outcomes in other areas of life.  I used every healing tool I describe within the book, offering rare insights into how many alternative healing approaches complement conventional medicine.Â

Cancer as a Love Story It is easy to see why the title of this book might well scare off many potential readers. Cancer is flat out scary, and most of us are afraid of it. But this is a very valuable book, a useful tool for healthy living. This is the self-told story of one woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rather than giving up, rather than going the traditional medical route of chemo and radiation, the author decided to fight back, to change her attitudes, to change her life.I’m a health researcher, whose work is focused on allergy and asthma, and at eliminating allergenic triggers in our environment. My most recent book on the subject is The Allergy-Fighting Garden. I’ve long been aware too, that there is also a possible connection to pollen-allergy and cancer, especially cancers that affect women. Then too, like almost all of us unfortunately, I’ve lost some very close friends, women all of them, who died all too young of cancer.I met the author, Gail Kauranen Jones a few years ago on Linked-in. I was impressed with her writing and her wide variety of interests pertaining to better human health. As I read her impressive book, I was struck over and over with the idea that this book is by no means just for those with a diagnosis of cancer. Nor is this book just for cancer survivors, even though the author is a thriving cancer survivor. So much of this book is packed with smart, solid, easy-to-use advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle, on how to get and then stay healthy.I found it especially interesting when she told her readers that many, if not most, women who get a diagnosis of cancer, that around three years prior they’d been dealing with extremely high levels of stress. Years ago a university veterinarian professor of mine told us, “Virtually every single case of disease you will encounter with domestic animals can be traced back to some sort of stress. In order to deal with the problem you need to do more than just treat the symptoms; you also need to identify the source of the stress, and then devise ways to eliminate it.â€It’s my own belief that too much stress can trigger almost any kind of severe health problem, and this is something the author of Cancer as a Love Story understands well. This book would be useful for anyone who is dealing with an overload of stress. As adults it is our responsibility to be as healthy as possible, to set good, positive examples for those around us. We need to develop simple, clean cut strategies to handle the stresses life throws at us constantly. We need to implement ways that help us to not only eat smarter and exercise more (which are of course very important) but we also need to learn to incorporate much more appreciation, more fun, more joy, more love into our lives. The road to good physical health is one that cannot be separated from good, positive mental health.I highly recommend this book and I would strongly encourage readers of these reviews to buy a copy, to read it yourself, and to certainly give a copy to any friend you have who is dealing with cancer. I also think it would make an interesting and useful gift for anyone who is dealing with loads of stress, and who needs to readjust, to enact what could well be life-saving measures. This book is also I should add, very honest, often emotionally powerful, and at all times, quite readable.
Raw, honest and vulnerable Gail takes you on a journey starting with first diagnosis which many hear as a death sentence. But NO! She walks and models a pathway that is a call to LIFE! A full-on mind body heart and spirit work bucking conventional but short sighted medical advice, investigating, exploring and testing not only alternative treatments but the dark corners and hinterlands of her mind and heart where self sabotaging stumbling blocks and childhood trauma reside. As a true warrior woman and wellness pioneer she boldly goes where Western medicine falls short. In so doing she outlines a new paradigm for healthcare and reform, not just for those who are ill but for all of us: how to release emotional toxins and unnecessary self-criticism that eventually can become dis-ease. This is not an easy path but for those with courage to face their forgotten shadow side, one of hope, compassion and a peace of mind sorely needed in our unstable world, Through her own sometimes excruciating journey Gail shows how living your life fully is a spiritual practice. As a wholistic nurse I am keenly drawn to ways of being that support & empower people to live consciously with a deep sense of true self love for all of who they are both wounded and healing. Gail's book is indeed an act of revolution in that endeavor.
I have not been diagnosed with cancer. Not yet, anyway. But several years ago, I did travel that path with two loved ones – my husband and my mother. My husband died of malignant melanoma and my mother of kidney cancer. How I wish this book, Cancer as a Love Story, had been available to me then. The end result may not have been any different, but I believe the difficult journey would have been easier, more thoughtful, more hopeful, more spiritual. This book is a unique and profoundly intimate view of Gail Kauranen Jones’ journey to wellness after her diagnosis of breast cancer. But it is so much more than a personal memoir; it is a wisdom companion. She has done all of the work of creating a toolkit comprised of the recent discoveries in neuroscience and the latest “energy as medicine†therapies. Many of us understand that our physical healing cannot be separated from our emotional and spiritual healing. Our physical body is only one of our dimensions. French philosopher, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, said that “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.†If he were alive today I know he would be raving about and recommending this book to anyone who is diagnosed with a grave illness.Gail details her five-year healing journey as she moves to “a new life story.†Upon her diagnosis she travelled inward. Yes, she did listen to the medical experts and accepted some of their recommendations. However, she had the courage “to be in a medical setting and keep listening within for guidance amidst others in authority positions.†She knew there were answers and options available beyond the usual surgery, radiation, chemo recommendations of the traditional medical establishment. Those options are varied and she provides us with a wealth of resources and information. They include Chinese medicine, meditation, physical as well as emotional detoxification (“Your issues in your tissuesâ€), various types of massage, the Mind Body Program at MGH, even TONG REN Healing Circles. This helpful aggregation of resources is not only for the patient but also for the family and friends who want to support that person. One of the books hallmarks is its readability. The chapters are bite sized – small gems of wisdom. Some of the topics the book deals with may seem esoteric to some but she explains and describes them in a clear, easily digestible way. She also provides us with helpful links on each topic to allow us to delve deeper on our own. Her journey of “moving beyond surviving to thriving†is one we all can take, whether we have cancer or not.Gail’s gift clearly is helping others learn to create a new mindset for LIVING in a way that produces new outcomes. Gail walks her talk: Her story of reinvention from empty nester in Boston to her courageous decision to move 3000 miles to Arizona to have a new start in life post cancer is as equally intriguing as her cancer healing journey. As she says in the book, “environments matter†in healing. She chose to create a clean slate to give her mind-body-spirit an optimal chance at great health.Within Cancer as a Love Story she also teaches that to truly change, we must stop, go inward, and reflect. I love this last quote of hers at the end of the book: “The pause – sometimes initiated by a life curveball like cancer or another one of the soul’s promptings for redirecting life – is often the sacred place of becoming who we truly are.â€Let’s face it: we have all had a curveball in life. Cancer was obviously Gail’s curveball, but what she learned from that experience has many applications to all of us going through any major life change. Gail is a true teacher. She mentions a sequel in the works. I am so looking forward to it.
