I liked the story because it shows that there are other paths to solve problems than cruelty and war - namely wisdom and compassion. Would have loved to learn a little bit more details about the lessons the monk and the commander learnt together that brought about such a drastic change

You can't have too many stories about compassion. I enjoyed this one, from the illustrations to the simple but compelling story. If only all (world) leaders could learn this important lesson!

I liked this story because it shows us how the monk in his wisdom was able to do something that no one else could, to fill the heart of the cruel commander with compassion. I would have liked to know a little more. Did the commander's behavior really change, or was this a momentary change of heart? Aside from this, it's an inspiring tale of hope.

Ji-li Jiang's THE RED SCARF GIRL is surprisingly one of the best books i have read this year. Since i found out that i have Chinese relatives from my mother's side (I am African American by the way), I have been much more interested in the Chinese culture. And ironically, i also found out that those Chinese relatives of mine lived through this chaotic time in China. I am far from truly knowing about these relatives (i don't even know what they look like), let alone do I know that much about the Chinese culture other than its history from the Shang Dynasty and Han Dynasty. But i feel that Ji-li Jang has revealed more about the Cultural Revolution than any history book on this subject, which very few people in the West know about. She also evinces such a moving narrative that's simple, and truly affective. People of all ages can understand the whole idea of the Cultural Revolution and the deaths and turmoil that happened upon innocent people, and innocent children. While reading this book, i felt as if i were in the author's shoes. I was nearly in tears as she battled upon the complications of truly wanting to be a Red Guard and take part in the revolution for Chairman Mao, and be against her family and denounce them as the enemy; or to be the enemy for simply doing the right thing. Esp. the scenes when her friends turned against her, of a relative of her friend killed herself, and of many other innocent people being humilated, and their privacy being infringed by the Red Guards, was truly haunting. I believe what makes this book so inspirational is how it doesn't only reflect one country, but all countries and people that lived in a time when power was manipulated, and people being brainwashed and losing their childhood and their past, and sometimes future, forever. I believe this book should be read in schools. It could be read in a social studies class, world history class, or an English class. I believe every student can get something out of this, such as a cultural awareness or historical awareness in this chapter of history, and to the last page get something out of it. This surely won't be the last time i will read this book. Highly recommend it.

This is NOT a book about the "big picture" of what happened in Communist China during the Cultural Revolution. Rather, it is a memoir of the lives of a young girl and her family and her friends' families. For the Chinese people, society's rules about what is good and bad were reversed, first when the Communists conquered China in 1949, and then the reversal was emphasized seventeen years later, when the Cultural Revolution began. The result was that families who, before Communism, had worked hard and intelligently and had prospered suddenly became national enemies. Even those who had chosen not to flee China, out of a strong sense of Chinese patriotism, like the author's parents and grandparents, were declared by the state to be "enemies of the people". Even worse, no way was allowed for such a family to "make up" for its past, and even the children who were born into Communism, like the author and her siblings and friends, were declared to be guilty of the "crimes" of their ancestors. For the author, the Cultural Revolution was a turning point in her life. Until then, her parents and grandmother had kept their heads down and been left alone, but now they were denounced and actively persecuted. What the author was seeing daily in her life conflicted with the propaganda she was getting at school, which, before, she had accepted without question. Now her confusion kept increasing, as she tried to make sense of her new world. Finally, she was told bluntly that she had to choose between her country and her family, and only if she publicly rejected her family could she have the life she had always expected to have. Of course this was an agonizing decision, and took much time, but she finally made her choice. The book is well-written, and does an excellent job of showing life in this tumultuous time as seen by a highly intelligent girl who was only twelve years old when the Cultural Revolution began. I highly recommend it.

Having had access to extensive research, best practices reports and services marketing associations, I wanted to share that I've found the book, so far, extremely vague, light, obvious while painfully salesy about the authors' own services. I am now reading about the diatribe on pricing. Having read and witnesses this debate for years, I can guarantee the writers do not have the necessary experience to provide solid advise to medium/large marketeers. If you have no experience at all, the book might be helpful even if not well researched or solid. Be careful! If you are more experienced, the advise will be too generic. May still be interesting. Might have one or two ideas that are overlooked. So far, I didn't find anything useful, and to this point, I would not recommend this book to a friend, only to a competitor.I will keep reading, and pray no more advertorials from the writers surface, as it's becoming irritating. In any case, I'd be very alert, and am very tempted to put this down. The marketing planning section was really a waste of time, even when it's so short as to take 10 min to read. So far, awful. What mislead me was the David Maister endorsement.I'll keep on reading and if my view changes, I'll make it a duty to come back and do justice. I give it two stars, not one, because it's still a good resource for someone with no experience at all that doesn't connect marketing with revenue. The book does argue that doesn't pay off, and it's right, plus shows some generic metrics (and then tries to sell you an Excel spreadsheet!)--UPDATED--I kept on reading, and it got reasonably interesting. It touches on some preconceptions and offers the reader to question conventional wisdom. It presents a branding progression map, it creates a simple framework to built different branding elements that, per se, are interesting and can be used to break down and combine the effort in a more directed, logical way. Overall, being optimistic this part is 4 stars to me (2 stars for the first chapters, 4 for the ones up to chapter 14 = 3 stars). It still lacks in specificity, but generates new thinking and helps revisit important assumptions that may be fruitful. I will update this if anything else changes. Also, the amount of self-promotion drops to nearly zero, which was a blessing.

Mike and John have created a recipe card to follow all the way to success.Their book is masterfully organized to show you how to determine your brand attributes and succinctly defines how to communicate your brand to your target market. Your brand message needs to resonate, differentiate, and the often missed, substantiate your firm in the overcrowded marketplace. This book is now front and center of my 2010 Marcom plan and gives me the confidence to invest heavily into building our brand.I've hired and worked with marketing consultants, I have a BS degree in marketing and I have shelves of marketing, branding and postioning books. This book is now my one source of information.Mike and John's book is meant for any professional that takes their marketing seriously and wants to get ahead of their competition. For me, the most valuable lesson was understanding the importance of substantiating your brand through thought leadership. Mike and John speak with authority and give examples after examples of how professional service firms have grown their firm from mediocrity to industry leaders.I wrote this review because I believe in this book. Buy it, unless you're an IT consultant, in which case I'll use it to clobber you in the marketplace. :)

I have been reading John Doerr and Mike Schultz's book on marketing for professional firms and it has me as captivated as a John Grisham mystery. The strategy development and tactics the authors suggest are based on real experiences from a lifetime of consulting with firms that have turned their astute advice into better client relations, more business and profit. I have implemented many of their recommendations and won new and more profitable US and overseas contracts for my Public Relations Firm as a result. This is it -- a business book that works! If you don't read a single business book this year, read this one... as far I am concerned, this is the business book of the decade.Dick Pirozzolo, APRCEO Pirozzolo Company Public RelationsCo-Author The Timberframe Way and Timberframe Interiors

Great book - read from beginning to end or jump around. I have been putting together yearly marketing plans/budgets for years and found that this is was extremely helpful. I was told my marketing plan was exceptional this year!

This book has got the goods on everything you need to move your firm ahead: the very best know-how from two of the very best practitioners and biz thought leaders on the essentials of professional success, steeped in vital topics like branding (all facets), lead generation, setting fees & prices, ID'ing your "key brand attributes," intellectual capital, relationship nurturing, "bad marketing advice," targeting, passion and much, much, much more. The writing itself sets the correct tone, one all too typically forgotten (or ignored) by even seasoned entrepreneurs. Chapter 6 is an example: "Don't Worry About Your Competition... Let Them Worry About YOU!"To skip thru common business blunders and get right to the core of your business value and success, open the pages of this book and get going. Recession or not, as author of a similar book, I can personally attest that this knowledge gem by Schultz and Doerr can empower you to leave loserville far behind.

A clearly written and useful book on how marketing can provide a framework in which service professionals can begin to appreciate marketing as a process, how it works, and how services can be delivered to the right people in the right way.

This is an excellent book about focusing on what matters in branding and lead generation. Like most business books, it's not rocket science, but it's a nice refresher and helps simplify the things all professional services professionals know we should be doing, but rarely take the time to do well. I've send numerous copies to students, friends and clients.

Cancer as a Love Story: Developing the Mindset for Living, by Gail Kauranen Jones

Review

"Spoiler alert:  Cancer as a Love Story is not just for people affected by cancer. Author Gail Kauranen Jones, a five-year survivor of breast cancer, takes on the center failure of western medicine:  the role of emotions in health and disease. Her heartfelt, brutally honest story takes the reader through her amazing journey of building new brain connections to enable healing through connection to community, nature, and the divine.  Her transformed mindset is focused on new possibilities and self-affirmation.  The book offers an abundance of tools, tips, resources, and lessons learned from both western and alternative approaches.  Gail points the way forward for anyone interested in a new American dream:  life, liberty and the pursuit of neuroplasticity."~Phyllis Strupp, brain training expert and award-winning author of The Richestof Fare and Better with Age:  The Ultimate Guide to Brain Training."Cancer as a Love Story contains a wealth of treasures for people wanting to explore the full spectrum of their healing options after a cancer diagnosis.  Gail Kauranen Jones shares straight-up her first-had experiences with modalities from conventional to the fringe, just as a friend might tell you about the good, the bad and the ugly of her experience.  Even more important, she delves into who we need to become in order to allow sustained healing to occur.  Curl up with a cup of hot tea and dive in!"~Dr. Shani Fox, ND, Healing and Hope for Cancer Survivors, drshanifox.com"A high-five to Gail Kauranen Jones for giving us the powerfully compelling chronicle of a wake-up call.  She tells like it is, without pulling her punches, and simultaneously makes it supremely informative, jams-packed with usable links and leads.  With grace and grit, she has used her illness for what all illnesses were designed for--to get our attention and reorient us--encouraging us to embrace not only the habits of optimal health, but perhaps the much harder human work of falling back in love with ourselves."--Gregg Levoy, author of Callings:  Finding and Following an Authentic Life and Vital Signs: The Nature and Nurture of Passion."Cancer as a Love Story is a very compassionate and educational book in which Gail Kauranen Jones provides the right combination of medical information and options for personal actions and techniques, all in nontechnical terms, and easily readable language.  Not to be missed are the 'tips' that she offers throughout the book.  Her book is a 'must read' for anyone with cancer, anyone who has a family member or a friend with cancer, and for healthcare providers.  It will change their lives.  Any reader will be inspired."--Dr. Ann Webster, health psychologist, professor and former director of The Mind Body for Program for Cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital."For too long breast cancer has been considered primarily 'a women's issue.'  Gail's story will inspire both men and women--especially men who dearly love a woman dealing with the tragic impact of hearing these four life-shattering words:  'You have breast cancer.'"--David Bradshaw, publisher, myideafactory.net.

From the Author

Cancer as a Love Story came as "a calling" in the middle of the night, after I initially vowed as a nationally recognized coach, writer and blogger to keep my cancer healing journey private.  Clearly there was a higher plan at work in my life, beyond what my will wanted.  The book's title popped into my head, and I jumped out of bed, and started writing for what seemed like nonstop for days.  I barely ate or showered, as the words kept pouring forth.Over the five-year period of completing this book I continued to hear new messages about teaching the power of love and a greater sense of worthiness to heal.  And when the calling at times felt too overwhelming, and I wanted to digress from the book, I would serendipitously meet the next person to guide me in shifting my mind, body or spirit in even more significant and profound ways.  My first book, To Hell and Back...Healing Your Way through Transition, which was published in 2004, helped readers deal with four major changes:  switching careers, becoming a mother, taking care of elderly parents, and coping the death of a loved one.Cancer as a love story:  Developing the mindset for living is much more comprehensive in teaching readers how to use the latest in neuroscience to train their minds to heal their bodies and produce other higher level outcomes in other areas of life.  I used every healing tool I describe within the book, offering rare insights into how many alternative healing approaches complement conventional medicine.Â

Cancer as a Love Story It is easy to see why the title of this book might well scare off many potential readers. Cancer is flat out scary, and most of us are afraid of it. But this is a very valuable book, a useful tool for healthy living. This is the self-told story of one woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rather than giving up, rather than going the traditional medical route of chemo and radiation, the author decided to fight back, to change her attitudes, to change her life.I’m a health researcher, whose work is focused on allergy and asthma, and at eliminating allergenic triggers in our environment. My most recent book on the subject is The Allergy-Fighting Garden. I’ve long been aware too, that there is also a possible connection to pollen-allergy and cancer, especially cancers that affect women. Then too, like almost all of us unfortunately, I’ve lost some very close friends, women all of them, who died all too young of cancer.I met the author, Gail Kauranen Jones a few years ago on Linked-in. I was impressed with her writing and her wide variety of interests pertaining to better human health. As I read her impressive book, I was struck over and over with the idea that this book is by no means just for those with a diagnosis of cancer. Nor is this book just for cancer survivors, even though the author is a thriving cancer survivor. So much of this book is packed with smart, solid, easy-to-use advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle, on how to get and then stay healthy.I found it especially interesting when she told her readers that many, if not most, women who get a diagnosis of cancer, that around three years prior they’d been dealing with extremely high levels of stress. Years ago a university veterinarian professor of mine told us, “Virtually every single case of disease you will encounter with domestic animals can be traced back to some sort of stress. In order to deal with the problem you need to do more than just treat the symptoms; you also need to identify the source of the stress, and then devise ways to eliminate it.”It’s my own belief that too much stress can trigger almost any kind of severe health problem, and this is something the author of Cancer as a Love Story understands well. This book would be useful for anyone who is dealing with an overload of stress. As adults it is our responsibility to be as healthy as possible, to set good, positive examples for those around us. We need to develop simple, clean cut strategies to handle the stresses life throws at us constantly. We need to implement ways that help us to not only eat smarter and exercise more (which are of course very important) but we also need to learn to incorporate much more appreciation, more fun, more joy, more love into our lives. The road to good physical health is one that cannot be separated from good, positive mental health.I highly recommend this book and I would strongly encourage readers of these reviews to buy a copy, to read it yourself, and to certainly give a copy to any friend you have who is dealing with cancer. I also think it would make an interesting and useful gift for anyone who is dealing with loads of stress, and who needs to readjust, to enact what could well be life-saving measures. This book is also I should add, very honest, often emotionally powerful, and at all times, quite readable.

Raw, honest and vulnerable Gail takes you on a journey starting with first diagnosis which many hear as a death sentence. But NO! She walks and models a pathway that is a call to LIFE! A full-on mind body heart and spirit work bucking conventional but short sighted medical advice, investigating, exploring and testing not only alternative treatments but the dark corners and hinterlands of her mind and heart where self sabotaging stumbling blocks and childhood trauma reside. As a true warrior woman and wellness pioneer she boldly goes where Western medicine falls short. In so doing she outlines a new paradigm for healthcare and reform, not just for those who are ill but for all of us: how to release emotional toxins and unnecessary self-criticism that eventually can become dis-ease. This is not an easy path but for those with courage to face their forgotten shadow side, one of hope, compassion and a peace of mind sorely needed in our unstable world, Through her own sometimes excruciating journey Gail shows how living your life fully is a spiritual practice. As a wholistic nurse I am keenly drawn to ways of being that support & empower people to live consciously with a deep sense of true self love for all of who they are both wounded and healing. Gail's book is indeed an act of revolution in that endeavor.

I have not been diagnosed with cancer. Not yet, anyway. But several years ago, I did travel that path with two loved ones – my husband and my mother. My husband died of malignant melanoma and my mother of kidney cancer. How I wish this book, Cancer as a Love Story, had been available to me then. The end result may not have been any different, but I believe the difficult journey would have been easier, more thoughtful, more hopeful, more spiritual. This book is a unique and profoundly intimate view of Gail Kauranen Jones’ journey to wellness after her diagnosis of breast cancer. But it is so much more than a personal memoir; it is a wisdom companion. She has done all of the work of creating a toolkit comprised of the recent discoveries in neuroscience and the latest “energy as medicine” therapies. Many of us understand that our physical healing cannot be separated from our emotional and spiritual healing. Our physical body is only one of our dimensions. French philosopher, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, said that “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” If he were alive today I know he would be raving about and recommending this book to anyone who is diagnosed with a grave illness.Gail details her five-year healing journey as she moves to “a new life story.” Upon her diagnosis she travelled inward. Yes, she did listen to the medical experts and accepted some of their recommendations. However, she had the courage “to be in a medical setting and keep listening within for guidance amidst others in authority positions.” She knew there were answers and options available beyond the usual surgery, radiation, chemo recommendations of the traditional medical establishment. Those options are varied and she provides us with a wealth of resources and information. They include Chinese medicine, meditation, physical as well as emotional detoxification (“Your issues in your tissues”), various types of massage, the Mind Body Program at MGH, even TONG REN Healing Circles. This helpful aggregation of resources is not only for the patient but also for the family and friends who want to support that person. One of the books hallmarks is its readability. The chapters are bite sized – small gems of wisdom. Some of the topics the book deals with may seem esoteric to some but she explains and describes them in a clear, easily digestible way. She also provides us with helpful links on each topic to allow us to delve deeper on our own. Her journey of “moving beyond surviving to thriving” is one we all can take, whether we have cancer or not.Gail’s gift clearly is helping others learn to create a new mindset for LIVING in a way that produces new outcomes. Gail walks her talk: Her story of reinvention from empty nester in Boston to her courageous decision to move 3000 miles to Arizona to have a new start in life post cancer is as equally intriguing as her cancer healing journey. As she says in the book, “environments matter” in healing. She chose to create a clean slate to give her mind-body-spirit an optimal chance at great health.Within Cancer as a Love Story she also teaches that to truly change, we must stop, go inward, and reflect. I love this last quote of hers at the end of the book: “The pause – sometimes initiated by a life curveball like cancer or another one of the soul’s promptings for redirecting life – is often the sacred place of becoming who we truly are.”Let’s face it: we have all had a curveball in life. Cancer was obviously Gail’s curveball, but what she learned from that experience has many applications to all of us going through any major life change. Gail is a true teacher. She mentions a sequel in the works. I am so looking forward to it.

This book is the first book in a wonderful series about a newly created group of Highlanders -- "The Highland Bodyguard". The Bodyguards have an important assignment -- to protect the powerless against England's covert attempts to eliminate people England deems a threat. These Highlanders are to be assigned to various missions by Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. The Highlanders are not very thrilled by the assignments, in part, because they are being typically assigned to protect English women and children. In this story, Ansel Sutherland is assigned the job of protecting the illegitimate son of the Earl of Lancaster, a despised Lord who has come to the Bruce attempting on the surface anyway to establish an alliance with the Scots. Ansel sets out for England and the castle of Dunstanburg, near the town of Embleton. Embleton is a newly established town that serves as the home for servants and other workers at the castle, including those masons, carpenters, and others building the castle walls, turrents, and gates.Ansel is surprised and disappointed when he finds the castle is incomplete and largely unprotected. There is no garrison of warriors or other protections. He realizes he has a huge job to do; later taking on the repair and preparations for completing the castle as well as training people to defend the castle. The real challenge he faces lies in the secretive and protective Lady Isolda. She refuses to tell Ansel where the child he is to protect is hidden. Only reluctantly does she later reveal that charge to be protected is her and the Earl of Lancaster's son! Later, after an attempt is made on her life by a hired worker, she shares some information with Ansel. The Earl of Lancaster has his eye on the crown of England. He sees England's Edward II as weak and he, Lancaster sees himself as better suited for the crown. However, Robert the Bruce, believing the Earl is sincere has assigned Ansel to protect, John, the Earl's son.The story has several twists and turns including a change in how Ansel feels about his assignment, John, and Isolda in particular. Ansel learns, among other things, that the Earl is not to be trusted and that his ambitions make life very difficult for Ansel and the charges he must protect. No, I won't give away all of the plot but this is a story well worth reading. Once I started the book I could not put it down!

I really enjoyed this story. Both the Hero and Heroine were likable, loyal characters. I didn't feel there was any filler or 'fluff' in this story. Every line contributed something to the story. It was a joy to read and I have already downloaded other books by this first time (for me) author.

Book 1 of the series Highland Bodyguards was as great as all Emma Prince's other series I have read. I loved the characters of Ansel and Lady Isolda. Their love story and suspenseful flight to the Highlands and a wonderful ending is , why I love all Emma's books and can't wait for book 2 of the series.

This was very good. It is book 1 in the new series. It is Ansel Sutherland's story with Lady Isolda. It flowed at a really good pace. I don't want to give away any spoilers. The actual description of this story is intriguing enough. I love forward to book 2. Hopefully, it will be out soon.

Loved this book. Very authentic speech patterns with Scottish brogue so nicely done you can hear it in your head. Lots of surprises and a love that cannot be denied. Can't wait to read the others in the series.

I loved the main characters. There was not a lot of filler on the story which made it flow nicely. I love Emma's writing I only wish she would pay to have them put on audio. I love to listen to a book when I have a headache from reading too much. It allows me to continue with the story while recovering. Hopfully she may do this with her next series. Either way I will buy it and read it

The plot is interesting & dialogue between the main characters moves the action well. I wish there had been an epilogue beginning a year later to see how well the characters developed in their new lives. I enjoyed this novel & look forward to reading the others.Sincerely,

Loved the action, adventure and suspense in this one. Emma Prince will capture you from the first sentence and not let go until the last.

Awesome book. Great ideas

I haven't made anything from this book yet but it has great ideas. It probably seems silly but I am going to make some blankets for my cats!

I think this book is a bit of bait and switch. It is only a quilt craft book, and not even a particularly good one. There is nothing Japanese about it. Rather it is an explanation of how expert quilter Karen Lewis uses up odd bits of spare fabric by making items that look nice without being formal and uniform. Calling it Wabi-Sabi is just being fancy. The projects for aprons, potholders, cushions, and the like are nothing special and can be seen anywhere. I found the instructions, especially the drawings, too meager for a beginner.I receive a review copy of "Wabi-Sabi Sewing: 20 Sewing Patterns for Perfectly Imperfect Projects" by Karen Lewis (F+W Media) through NetGalley.com.

I love this book, it gives me permission to not be perfect - and believe you me - if you are a serious patch worker/quilter there is no such state but perfect. This is a book that makes it fun to sew, makes it fun to make do and makes it fun to learn. There are not a lot of project in the book, but all are different from quilt, to pot holders, aprons. a lovely picnic cloth and my favourite - mended jeans in the boro style. The best thing I like about this book is that you can see and feel the effort and love that goes into these handmade items - the fact that they weren't just stuff brought off the shelve, but time and effort was taken, imagination was used, combined with a make do attitude to create some very lovely and simple articles for the home.Great book for a beginner too

I really like this perfectly imperfect approach to sewing. The author explains this approach as embracing natural imperfections; such as using treasured, mismatched scraps, hand stitching and visible mending. It makes me think of a scrap quilt that has now been passed down three generations in my family. My great grandmother pieced scraps of old clothing in various rectangular shapes into a giant collage of memories. The projects in this book are inspiring in the same way; my favorites include an infinity scarf made from stash fabrics (Informal Mixer), a tutorial for mending clothing (Well Worn) and a scrap fabric drawstring bag (Creating Calm). There are also a lot of patterns for pretty quilts (my skills aren’t quite there yet) and a great section at the end on technique. I highly recommend this book.I was given an advance reader copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Wabi-Sabi Sewing is a fun and truly beautiful guide to a wildly popular Japanese sewing style. It features 20 patterns that include gorgeous quilts, an elegant scarf, quilted handbag and pouch; wall hanging; linens, place mats, coasters; pillow cases, and stitching for jeans I want to do today. Author Karen Lewis, a fabric designer and sewing/quilting guru, uses high quality natural fabrics and shows you step-by-step techniques for creating this “perfectly imperfect” style. 5/5Thanks to F + W Media and NetGalley for the review copy; opinions are fully mine.#Wabi-sabiSewing #NetGalley

Wabi-Sabi Sewing by Karen Lewis is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late July. These are designs for stitched works with their own names/title, rather than an indication on what they are or can be used for (most turn out to be pillows, coasters, runners, totes, scarves, potholders, purses, clutches, towels, blankets, jean mending, and aprons). The instructions are fairly minimalist and show stitch diagrams and photography that makes the finished projects pop in soft relief.

This book is full of inspiration- beautiful palette of fabrics used throughout, great projects, and permission to go with the imperfect. I already have a list of projects I want to make for the holidays!

THE DAWN AGE   THERE ARE NONE who can say with certain knowledge when the world began, yet this has not stopped many maesters and learned men from seeking the answer. Is it forty thousand years old, as some hold, or perhaps a number as large as five hundred thousand—or even more? It is not written in any book that we know, for in the first age of the world, the Dawn Age, men were not lettered.   We can be certain that the world was far more primitive, however—a barbarous place of tribes living directly from the land with no knowledge of the working of metal or the taming of beasts. What little is known to us of those days is contained in the oldest of texts: the tales written down by the Andals, by the Valyrians, and by the Ghiscari, and even by those distant people of fabled Asshai. Yet however ancient those lettered races, they were not even children during the Dawn Age. So what truths their tales contain are difficult to find, like seeds among chaff.   What can most accurately be told about the Dawn Age? The eastern lands were awash with many peoples—uncivilized, as all the world was uncivilized, but numerous. But on Westeros, from the Lands of Always Winter to the shores of the Summer Sea, only two peoples existed: the children of the forest and the race of creatures known as the giants.   Of the giants in the Dawn Age, little and less can be said, for no one has gathered their tales, their legends, their histories. Men of the Watch say the wildlings have tales of the giants living uneasily alongside the children, ranging where they would and taking what they wanted. All the accounts claim that they were huge and powerful creatures, but simple. Reliable accounts from the rangers of the Night’s Watch, who were the last men to see the giants while they still lived, state that they were covered in a thick fur rather than simply being very large men as the nursery tales hold.   There is considerable evidence of burials among the giants, as recorded in Maester Kennet’s Passages of the Dead—a study of the barrow fields and graves and tombs of the North in his time of service at Winterfell, during the long reign of Cregan Stark. From bones that have been found in the North and sent to the Citadel, some maesters estimate that the largest of the giants could reach fourteen feet, though others say twelve feet is nearer the truth. The tales of long-dead rangers written down by maesters of the Watch all agree that the giants did not make homes or garments, and knew of no better tools or weapons than branches pulled from trees.   The giants had no kings and no lords, made no homes save in caverns or beneath tall trees, and they worked neither metal nor fields. They remained creatures of the Dawn Age even as the ages passed them by, men grew ever more numerous, and the forests were tamed and dwindled. Now the giants are gone even in the lands beyond the Wall, and the last reports of them are more than a hundred years old. And even those are dubious—tales that rangers of the Watch might tell over a warm fire.   The children of the forest were, in many ways, the opposites of the giants. As small as children but dark and beautiful, they lived in a manner we might call crude today, yet they were still less barbarous than the giants. They worked no metal, but they had great art in working obsidian (what the smallfolk call dragonglass, while the Valyrians knew it by a word meaning “frozen fire”) to make tools and weapons for hunting. They wove no cloths but were skilled in making garments of leaves and bark. They learned to make bows of weirwood and to construct flying snares of grass, and both of the sexes hunted with these.   Their song and music was said to be as beautiful as they were, but what they sang of is not remembered save in small fragments handed down from ancient days. Maester Childer’s Winter’s Kings, or the Legends and Lineages of the Starks of Winterfell contains a part of a ballad alleged to tell of the time Brandon the Builder sought the aid of the children while raising the Wall. He was taken to a secret place to meet with them, but could not at first understand their speech, which was described as sounding like the song of stones in a brook, or the wind through leaves, or the rain upon the water. The manner in which Brandon learned to comprehend the speech of the children is a tale in itself, and not worth repeating here. But it seems clear that their speech originated, or drew inspiration from, the sounds they heard every day.   The gods the children worshipped were the nameless ones that would one day become the gods of the First Men—the innumerable gods of the streams and forests and stones. It was the children who carved the weirwoods with faces, perhaps to give eyes to their gods so that they might watch their worshippers at their devotions. Others, with little evidence, claim that the greenseers—the wise men of the children—were able to see through the eyes of the carved weirwoods. The supposed proof is the fact that the First Men themselves believed this; it was their fear of the weirwoods spying upon them that drove them to cut down many of the carved trees and weirwood groves, to deny the children such an advantage. Yet the First Men were less learned than we are now, and credited things that their descendants today do not; consider Maester Yorrick’s Wed to the Sea, Being an Account of the History of White Harbor from Its Earliest Days, which recounts the practice of blood sacrifice to the old gods. Such sacrifices persisted as recently as five centuries ago, according to accounts from Maester Yorrick’s predecessors at White Harbor.   This is not to say that the greenseers did not know lost arts that belong to the higher mysteries, such as seeing events at a great distance or communicating across half a realm (as the Valyrians, who came long after them, did). But mayhaps some of the feats of the greenseers have more to do with foolish tales than truth. They could not change their forms into those of beasts, as some would have it, but it seems true that they were capable of communicating with animals in a way that we cannot now achieve; it is from this that legends of skinchangers, or beastlings, arose.   In truth, the legends of the skinchangers are many, but the most common—brought from beyond the Wall by men of the Night’s Watch, and recorded at the Wall by septons and maesters of centuries past—hold that the skinchangers not only communicated with beasts, but could control them by having their spirits mingle. Even among the wildlings, these skinchangers were feared as unnatural men who could call on animals as allies. Some tales speak of skinchangers losing themselves in their beasts, and others say that the animals could speak with a human voice when a skinchanger controlled them. But all the tales agree that the most common skinchangers were men who controlled wolves—even direwolves—and these had a special name among the wildlings: wargs.   Legend further holds that the greenseers could also delve into the past and see far into the future. But as all our learning has shown us, the higher mysteries that claim this power also claim that their visions of the things to come are unclear and often misleading—a useful thing to say when seeking to fool the unwary with fortune-telling. Though the children had arts of their own, the truth must always be separated from superstition, and knowledge must be tested and made sure. The higher mysteries, the arts of magic, were and are beyond the boundaries of our mortal ability to examine.   Yet no matter the truths of their arts, the children were led by their greenseers, and there is no doubt that they could once be found from the Lands of Always Winter to the shores of the Summer Sea. They made their homes simply, constructing no holdfasts or castles or cities. Instead they resided in the woods, in crannogs, in bogs and marshes, and even in caverns and hollow hills. It is said that, in the woods, they made shelters of leaves and withes up in the branches of trees—secret tree “towns.”   It has long been held that they did this for protection from predators such as direwolves or shadowcats, which their simple stone weapons—and even their vaunted greenseers—were not proof against. But other sources dispute this, stating that their greatest foes were the giants, as hinted at in tales told in the North, and as possibly proved by Maester Kennet in the study of a barrow near the Long Lake—a giant’s burial with obsidian arrowheads found amidst the extant ribs. It brings to mind a transcription of a wildling song in Maester Herryk’s History of the Kings-Beyond-the-Wall, regarding the brothers Gendel and Gorne. They were called upon to mediate a dispute between a clan of children and a family of giants over the possession of a cavern. Gendel and Gorne, it is said, ultimately resolved the matter through trickery, making both sides disavow any desire for the cavern, after the brothers discovered it was a part of a greater chain of caverns that eventually passed beneath the Wall. But considering that the wildlings have no letters, their traditions must be looked at with a jaundiced eye.

This is not a story book; it’s a history book and it’s written as such. The idea is that Maester Yandel wrote this book as a gift to the king. (The Baratheons get treated quite favorably in this tome; this is a Maester who is trying to get somewhere.)The rest is—well, if you (like me) enjoy history or are a hard-core R. R. Martin fan you will like this book. If not, you may not—though you will love the beautiful illustrations, the embossed dragons on the front cover and the parchment-like background designs. And you will love the way this book feels. It’s wonderfully constructed. The covers are padded and the pages are sewn to the book’s spine. And the pages themselves are not the cheap-feeling pages you normally get; they’re thick and slightly glossy. So the illustrations and the construction are superb. The text is—history book like. I learned a lot. I discovered that there are dragons just about everywhere, what Valyrians call dragon glass, what the Dorne has against the iron Throne, how greyscale came into the world, some pretty horrific stories about the Others, and much more besides. I was particularly interested in the legends the Maester mentions again and again only to dismiss them as a learned man is taught to do. Anyone who has either read R. R. Martin’s novels will know that these fanciful stories are, in fact, all too true. And let’s face it, we have a year and half to speculate about how the Game of Thrones will end. I can’t claim to know the ending but, if the writers are at all true to the books, the ending will be rooted in the history of Westeros. And this book--while written in the often dry tone I for one often associate with history books—most definitely provides that history. So if you need some help speculating about what (say) an ice dragon might do (and yes, ice dragons do put in an appearance here), you might want to check out the Untold History of Westeros.

I pre-ordered a few months ago, not knowing what to expect. So unwrapping an oversized book of extensive production quality was a surprise, since I was expecting something that would line up on the shelf next to the five ASOIAF books. Note that you're getting an oversized book with very nice cover, page, and print quality, which helps the artwork stand out.As far as the text, which many of the reviews here are quick to slam or to praise, I felt the truth was in the middle and uneven would be the best word to describe. Some of the narratives are very well done - the "short story" of the Conquest, the reign of King Jaehaerys, and the history of the Vale in particular stood out as well done; the narrative flowed well, and the characterizations were very satisfying, but most importantly gave itself identity and value. As far as a common identifier of the best pieces, the text is at its best and finds a nice rhythm when it becomes character-centric as opposed to purely event-centric. When Martin et. immerse you in the rich characterizations of Nymeria, Aegon, Robar Royce, and Tywin, and let the history flow around them is extremely enjoyable.Other portions were frustrating - several histories of reigns and a couple of the Kingdoms really felt like obligated filler as opposed to a seized opportunity to provide rich lore, and all too often the "Untold History" teased on the cover produced only empty text containing no more than "going through the motions" summations of previously known information, providing no additional lore or color. It is understandable in areas where it's obvious that Martin isn't ready to show his cards; others such as the War of the Ninepenny Kings from a 10,000 foot view and the Greyjoy Rebellion being reduced to a couple paragraphs and passing on the opportunity to add color and depth as opposed to regurgitation due to necessity were a letdown. The choice of the maester as a point of view was overall a sound decision. The additional layer adds richness: bias is introduced, sources are referenced, and the environment of the ASOIAF novels needs to be taken into account by the reader - a very Martin-esque move. The "cop outs", where the decision to use a maester as the writer leads to lack of expansion or evasion were an unfortunate consequence. As far as the artwork, I expected the illustrations to be filler, almost an annoyance beside the lore. It was the exact opposite - the illustrations are impressive, most absolutely stunning. The amount of artwork, fantastic detail, and affording a quality template for the production really stood out. I'm not sold that AWOIAF will be a frequent reread or that the table of contents and index reference enough consistency in the text for it to serve as a reference, but there will definitely be portions worth a bookmark and others worth perusing at times, and the art is worth a complete page through anytime.

Very interesting. For those who don't know, this is pretty much a history book of Westeros and what is known of Essos and Sothoryos. It was written by a maester for King Robert Baratheon, and you'll notice the language becomes very flowery when his reign is mentioned. Some topics mentioned did not make it into the TV show until at least a year or two after the book was published. It offers a detailed account of events of the past deeds of Tywin Lannister, and you kinda see why he was like he was. The front and back covers are padded and feel very high-quality. The artwork all throughout this book is nothing short of amazing. It's worth the price just for that if you don't feel like reading it. There are pictures on almost every page, but it may still take awhile to read due to small type and double-column format. Also included is a Targaryen family tree, which is more complicated and has more branches than you would expect. It becomes very hard to keep up with the ones of that family who are mentioned in the historical narrative because SO MANY of the Targaryens have the same names. For those of us who have yet to read the Game of Thrones books, this one is a great read. Very informative and well worth your time.

This book provides a fantastic peek into the world of the "Game of Thrones" universe (I know it's actually the Song of Ice and Fire universe, but I think more people watch the TV show and know it that way). The art is visually stunning, and it is fascinating to get more insight into the history of the characters, lands and creatures from Martin's series. The book itself is also very appealing, with a somewhat "soft", padded feeling cover that reminds me of a very old, handcrafted book. I love this book and can't wait to delve even further with the forthcoming novels and season of the TV show.

This is a gorgeous, heavy and over-sized book. The artwork is awesome and it has maps and genealogical tables of the more prominent families. Definitely recommended for the game of throne enthusiast.
